  1. NVu, Quanta and Bluefish are rather popular web development environments on IDE. I have used Quanta more frequently than I've used the rest (when I'm not on vi, that is... ), and I quite liked it. Being able to connect via FTP directly, an imagemap plugin, etc, makes it fairly handy.I use Nvu when I am on Windows, and it is defintely a superior option to Frontpage. I've had trouble compiling it on Debian Sarge, but it worked seamlessly on my Fedora, and I quite like the simplistic interface. <off-topic>I've never used Studio 8 and I am sure it is more feature rich than the corresponding open source tools put together I mean, that's what you hope you're paying for, right? Anyway, open source tools may not always be as powerful as their propetiery counterparts, but they are very close, which is doubly admirable because no one is getting paid for the work they are putting in... Besides, open source software is great fun - maybe I'll explain/talk about this elsewhere! I can get carried away quite easily...</off-topic>
  2. delivi,No problems there I am glad it worked for you...Good luck with your forums.Cheers!
  3. Okay... close to midnight here, and I'm not in best self, so I'll probably keep this brief. My apologies in advance.Small Problems:Notice that the background doesn't tile as smoothly as I'd like it to.I second rvalkass, check out on the spaces.Mmm... hover effects on the links would be nice. Plain CSS, and subtle... but existant :(The font size a bit too small, perhaps? Or maybe my FF is just configured wrong, dunno...What's great:Makes me realize red and gray can actually go quite well together :)I like layouts with photographs, so this is impressive sans photographs. Clean and sleek. Nicely done overall ;)I look forward to your finished stuff!
  4. Unless I'm badly mistaken, that is not the bbcode syntax for posting a url. A url would look like this: [url = https://www.google.de/?gfe_rd=cr&ei=BwkjVKfAD8uH8QfckIGgCQ&gws_rd=ssl ] Google! [/url ] to render the following link: Google! I think a preg_replace in php should do the trick quite easily. Replace all [/ url]http://forums.xisto.com/ with </a> and all with ">. Or > and < instead of > and <, respectively. Only the last replace is a little tricky, and should be used with care. I cannot comment very much without further details, but I hope you get the general idea. Having said that I hope I did not misunderstand what you were trying to say... sorry if that is the case! Ping back with your further concerns
  5. Must be an issue with permissions. If I remember correctly, the settings are configured in the phpmyadmin.ini file, although I can't be too sure - the point is that there is little you can do about it unless you can persuade the company into changing the default settings - which I wouldn't advise very much, because if things are the way they are, there's a reason :)There is a link in your control panel, usually to the left of the link to phpmyadmin (not too sure, however), called "MySQL databases" or something to that effect. Clicking on it should give you a list of all databases and associated operations. Hit the trashcan for whatever database you want to delete ;)Hope this helps! As always, ping back if you have any issues...
  6. Delivi: The Styles Management section in the phpBB admin section is not meant for switching styles on your forum. You will find an entry called "Default Style" in the General Configuration, and that is where you should be able to set it. If you want your forum users to have the option of switching between styles from their profile, then don't check the override user default button, else check it That's about all there is to it. Hope this helps, and ping if anything doesn't work. By the way, phpBB provides free support for their software, and their official community a good place to ask as well. Cheers!
  7. Mm... sorry for taking aeons to reply... I am not very good at being prompt; sorry Yes, Bangalore is a rather nice place to live in, although you will find that amusingly varied opinions about living in Bangalore. I happen to be in the outskirts of the city - very little pollution gets to you, and there is still some greenery. The weather is unpredictable and most people are, indeed, very nice and hospitable. I only dislike the roads, but they say a metro will be up and functional before 2010 - let's see I have grown to like Bangalore simply because the amount of time I've spent here - are you coming back anytime soon?
  8. Oh YES... has happened to me on more than one occassion, lol. As for topics go, the more varied and popular a forum is, I guess it is natural to expect a consequential variety in the content posted by the users of the forum. It might be annoying to see an article about bugfixes on a poetry forum, but for a place like Xisto, unless it's TOS-violating, I guess most content is just fine Ignore what you don't like, methinks it ain't that hard.
  9. Hey Paul,Awesome website - Indoxyl Designs Only thing is I noticed an error of spelling - or at least I thought it was an error (I think it was on the services page, exceptional probably spelt without a c or something, I'll look it up again), and the Google ads seem to be jutting out of their container boxes (on Opera, at least). Otherwise, cool work!A PDA watch with Palm OS sounds so like the sort of thing I'd want to own! *grin* That makes me wonder, do you frequent ThinkGeek? If you don't already, check out their stores, they've got stuff that may catch your fancy.I like Joomla too, but templating is a pain, especially if you use nothing more than vi. *sighs*See you around on the forums :)Cheers.
  10. I need a tiny bit of help with some flash files. I have taken up a project in php that I did not expect would involve any flash editing, but I am dealing with already existing .swf files that make calls to various php files. Now, here's the situation:I don't have the .fla files, only .swf. So I need someone who has access to a flash decompiler who can possibly help me out. After decompiling the files, I require that all the links/calls to php files, which are made using relative paths/addresses, be changed to absolute paths, like change something.php to http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ . Then I need them recompiled. There are a few files for which the process needs to be repeated - if someone can offer to help me out on this, that would be wonderful. I am not entirely sure what I can do in return - maybe credits, or if you have a PP account we could discuss a payment. Please send me a PM or ping here if you have access to the necessary resources.Thing is, after Monday I can find myself a computer that has Windows (and therefore the necessary tools) on it, so this topic becomes null and void - cos I'll do then. But I'd really like to get this done before that, so if someone is feeling extraordinarily generous, please holler. Cheers, and thank you!
  11. I agree And I must add that the converse is also true - a lot of non-drinkers can be complete idiots *grin* Well, all generalizations are bad, so... Anyway, the question is what I would do if someone forced a drink on me (or anything else, for that matter, that would be generally against my principles)... well, there are a couple of ways to look at it. Situation A. I'm with close friends who are fully aware of - *ahem* - let's say - my general preferences, and they're just trying to force something on me. Situation B. Someone who doesn't quite know me has taken great efforts in setting up something for me in the hope that I'll like it - like, for example, buying me a very expensive drink and waiting expectantly for me to cherish it Well, in situation A I'd either oblige and avenge myself (later) or tell them upfront that this just won't do - put my foot down real hard on them, in other words. In situation B - well, I've never been involved in such a situation in the context of alcohol - but once (it was pretty amusing) a not-so-well-acquainted friend called me over for lunch and worked really hard on making stuffed tomatoes for me - and almost everyone who knows me knows I can't stand tomatoes - not stuffed ones, at least. But I gulped them down, one after another, because knowing that they were made out of concern for me helped me like it enough However, it is highly unlikely that a young gang (particularly in party like scenarios) will want you to drink out of concern for yeh (duh), so you're usually in situation A - in which case it is good to stand up to your instincts My five paisas anyway...
  12. I think there is a book (not fiction, really, more along the lines of popular science) called The Elegant Univers that explains quantum mechanics very well. Proof of the fact is that even an idiot like me felt like I have a vague understanding of what's going on If I remember correctly, Niels Bohr (one of the leading men of physics) once said that if you don't feel slightly dizzy after having read/tried to understand the fundas of Quantum Mechanics, you have not understood anything at all. I get the feeling he's right. Even Feynman said that while very few people understand the theory of relativity, he was confident that no one understood Quantum Mechanics. And anyone who's read Surely you're joking, Mr Feynman (or has heard about him otherwise) knows that he's one of the finest minds to have ever existed. So there.... if you feel you have not understood, you're not alone - you are, in fact, in excellent company I'm not entirely sure about the theory of multiple universes, but most of Quantum Mechanics (especially when coupled with String theory) can sure sound bizzare. And yes, thinking about Schordinger's cat is one of my favorite passtimes *grin*
  13. I thought there was a manual update link that you could click on to update stats so that it showed the cumulative stats till date... not sure though, been ages since I logged into my cpane *oops*

    Rising Gas Prices!

Me personally waiting for a solar-powered car... wonder why Sun Microsystems has not come up with something along those lines yet... I'm a huge fan of anything that makes petrol unnecessary, for example, the cycle - but I still use public/private transport for my regular travel needs, I'm afraid
  15. Absolutely - but on the other hand, I wouldn't want to have a completely crappy-looking website (which it probably is anyway, but arrrgh... never mind ). Hmm... I see your concern but I don't see a way out. Perhaps you can direct me to someplace that explicitly details potential problems with relative positioning all the way? I've used it to some success so far, that's why I designed the script that way. Would you mind discussing the idea at greater length with me, if the need arises? Perhaps over email (don't want to clutter the forums too much)... However, I'll completely understand if you're busy and have better things to do Thanks so much for taking the trouble to look through this. I'll see what I can do to improve on incorporating margins and padding.
  16. SM, Thank you for your comments and suggestions - they are all good The problem with the background is that the image file is rather large, and irrespective of what I use (php, frames, et al), it is bound to take time to load the first time. After that it gets into cache anyway, so I'm not that worried. Besides, I'm not particularly comfortable with frames, after all the general criticism about them. I'm relieved, thank you for checking Done. Scrollbars? Don't you see the w3c image to the extreme left anyway? Done, thanks for pointing out. Yep, when I find the time Right, thanks so much for the advice. Most of it implemented... thank you again! Cheers....
  17. Hello everyone: Just got a new script (javascript) up and running, and designed a website for it too. Basically, what it does, in a rather primitive fashion, is that it takes the html code for a table-oriented layout and converts it to a CSS layout. I've done my best to ensure that it handles nested tables by generating appropriately, relatively positioned divs. I whipped up the design over five hours, and I've very apprehensive about what it looks like. Any comments will be appreciated, and I'd really like to know what I need to do before I officially release the site to the public (to whatever public I know, that is) and submitting it to search engines. Some SEO advice would come in handy - I am very clueless on that front. I don't even use metatags properly. The site is located here . Things I'm aware of - a) The background takes a while to load, and there are two different background images; one for index.html, and one for the remanining pages. b ) There is no way of returning to the home or front page without manually changing the url. As for problem (a), I'm still thinking of a way out. I've grown to like to photograph a little too much for my own good. *shrug* Problem ( b ) - I'm not sure why anyone would want to return to the front page, it's just meant to give a overview/intro. All the information/content is on the other pages. I don't want a longer navbar than what it is currently, however... if a lot of people think this should change, I'll change it. Finally - the website is tested and wokring on the lates versions of the following browsers: Firefox Galeon Epiphany Konquerer Opera However, didn't get a chance to test it on IE. If someone could look it up for me, it would be very cool. The pages are standards-complaint, it's the only thing I'm slightly cheerful about. Not a very good website, I admit, but I want to know exactly how unreasonable/bad it looks to everyone else. Looking forward to some inputs here... Cheers!
  18. Shadowx:You might still consider applying - you never know when Google might surprise you Indeed, it is a huge exposure for open source projects; on the other hand, it also breaks the myth that OSS developers never get paid for what they do The fact that it is a paid internship definitely enhances the enticement factor.Hope to see you, and some others, participating. Too bad if your college worries weigh too heavily on you :lol:Cheers!
  19. Whaever the case may be, I'm afraid there is really no excuse for not responding to e-mails! I am sure that does not take too much of an effort... I think I would be less angry or even reasonably calm if I got a couple of e-mails saying yada, yada, your stuff is on it's way <some explaination>. Exactly... It's plain unprofessional (crudely so) to keep in touch up to the point of payment and then disappear. Trouble is, I am not sure if it's any better on Y!. While I am sure the overall service may be better, it is impossible to completely eliminate any chances of running into people/situations like this Like jlhaslip pointed out, hope the skirt, at least, looks good
  20. Hello everyone: If you have not heard of it already, then you should be heading straight here if you are a student with decent programming abilities and a strong sense of enthusisasm for open source projects (find more details at the site). It's an internship opportunity - you get to work with some of the leading open source projects of the day - over a period of three months, and the financial reward amounts to $4500. If you are not a student, but a well established developer, then - as fas as I understand - you can also apply for mentorship. Hope this is useful for the potential developers at Xisto Please note that non-students and teams are not allowed. Cheers!
  21. Okay, I hope my response does not qualify as off-topic, but anyway, here goes:I have a hosting account on a linux server (non-Xisto), which is supposed to be under a shared hosting plan. When I FTP to my site, I am expected to upload all my info to the /var/www/html directly, which isn't unusual; but I can also access a directory called /home/user, where user refers to my account. /home/user has a subdirectory called userhtml, which is a symlink to /var/www/html. Is there anything at all about this that should strike me as wierd? If the resources are shared, then how can I access stuff outside /home/user?This is probably something I should be asking in a tech support forum, but I thought I'd bring it up while we are at discussing shared hosting anyway. Besides, it does not really bother me; I'm just generally curious. If this is way off topic, then please moderate the post accordingly.
  22. I'll look forward to your ananlysis of the situation, True2Earn. Possibly a planned conspiracy of the search engine? I'm assuming this is a deliberate occurence...Edit: Failed to notice dark_drgn's quoted content. Interesting... I see it now
  23. @misere: A triangular number need not be prime. Whoever made such an assertion? @Kioku: I don't think the original poster was trying to claim that the hundered numbers listed here are all that are known to mankind *grin* Er... (s)he's probably trying to say that 666 is the largest triangular number to be composed of the same digits, or something like that. How far that is true, however, I have not been able to check *shrug*On the other hand, I don't think it's difficult to generate triangular numbers (if the definition is anything to go by). Definitely looks less trickier than primes, for instance.
  24. Most of the things I cannot stand are (ironically enough) to do with myself or circumstances, very rarely about other people. For instance, I cannot stand -having to go to sleep knowing that a program has not compiled properly, having to change a hard disk (or hardware) because it's not compatible with my favorite linux distribution (or software - generic problem),traffic jams - I get bored very easily, power cuts, aka electricity failures, especially since they seem to happen when I'm right in the middle of something interesting that I'm doing that also involves electricity *grrr*,losing repeatedly in Solitare/minesweeper,not being able to make a pack of cards stand up properly, waking up on the day of an exam knowing I have not prepared for it (happens all the time), and spam.Yep, that pretty much covers it
  25. Ahh... interesting. I have given up on the research stories. We had a lesson in our General English module in our last semester in college that was precisely about this sort of thing. The author expresses his extreme distaste for 'scientfic' observations and analysis, and claims that the only way to go is to follow thy heart... eat what you like, enjoy the food, yada yada...Actually, I kinda agree. If I were to grow obese as a consequence of my food intake, I would perhaps be a little worried - not so much about the appearence-oriented problems (I usually couldn't care less); but more because of the associated health concerns - I wouldn't completely shrug away the possiblitly of becoming a potential heart patient <_<But again, I would combat it, like jlhaslip pointed out, with some movement and excerise. My normal tactic is to shut the door to my study, convert my computer into a music station, turn up the volume, and dance like no one's watching [Edit: Corrected a rather embarassing spelling mistake *oops*]
