  1. stevey, make a random pick every linux user has great things to say about their particular distribution package they use, so agreeing on which to choose would be an endless debate. download one (any one) and see if you can be comfortable in installing and running it. but i would suggest you make further research on linux as well as hardware compatibility lists from each of the distributors. then download that which you suppose can handle your hardware. just needs time though. also read: from http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ ==== Which Distribution Is The Best? Yeah, right. The best distribution is whichever one that You think is best. I suggest that you install and try as many different distributions as you can. Not only will you learn some things about Linux in general, you'll also discover some things about Linux in particular, like which one is best for you. ====
  2. icleric, if ur domain name is pointed to another host before transferring it to Xisto and that old host is still working, the old host will be where all references to your domain name will be directed (because that is where the OLD DNS records are pointed). AFTER propagation of the new DNS settings of your domain name within the next 24/48 hrs after your update (in this case to Xisto's nameservers), all references will be to your Xisto hosting. so while DNS propagation is not yet complete, you can prepare your content for Xisto already to make it ready for upload later. (otherwise, you have to use the direct IP address of Xisto hosting if youwant to upload AHEAD of complete DNS propagation.)
  3. i dont see the point of this poll... too childish. so i didnt vote for any of the choices. i just want to point out that i believe in Xisto admin's decisionto give moderator status to people he trusts to give these forums a semblance of substance. because this is a posts-for-hosting forum, wetruly need people of the kind of templest and sauron and the othermoderators. or else we'll be deluged with nonsense crap (otherwiseknown as spam) which hinders enjoyment of the forums, and whichjust adds garbage to an otherwise helpful and meaningful exchangeof ideas. this post is a salute to Xisto admin and all moderators.keep up the good work.
  4. maybe in the near future... when apps i find useful are available for linux already.

    Gmail

from gmail? or from swapping sites? ur one lucky dude, ryan, if gmail gave you 13 invites recently. stevey seems to need one, so pass on the luck.
  6. LOL! admin, you really have a great sense of humor! that reply surelymade me nearly fall off my seat. hahahhaaĆ¼ psp, maybe DUREX has branched out into some other lines of products already -- like gaming versions of their "stuff". heheheĆ¼
  7. Lollipop, i have read and enjoyed the hobbit as well. the hobbit is something like a prequel for the whole LOTR book series. but an even earlier accounts of the middle-earth can be found in THE SILMARILLION.The book's FOREWORD goes:"The Silmarillion, now published four years after the death of its author, is an account of the Elder Days, or the First Age of the World. In The Lord of the Rings were narrated the great events at the end of the Third Age; but the tales of The Silmarillion are legends deriving from a much deeper past, when Morgoth, the first Dark Lord, dwelt in Middle-earth, and the High Elves made war upon him for the recovery of the Silmarils." Tolkien's mythological books are really a blast to read.
  8. yeah, admin, better not use them on this site as MOST users nowadays automatically block pop-ups anyway. it would be an annoyance for youto realize less income than you would expect from these. furthermore, you can't control all the ads that come with the service provider youchoose for popups. and most popups are disguised to include auto-installersthat will ruin Xisto's reputation if ever it gets downloaded to othermembers' computers... some auto-installers are nasty to screw theregistry, without the user even knowing it.as a general rule, shy away from popups.

    Gmail

GMAIL still in BETA test mode so we should all expect glitches every now and then. that is the purpose of beta test, to find out what needs fixing and improving. all in all, i don't find gmail a bad service considering that it is FREE. Beggars can't be choosers.
  14. i believe you have to request the upgrade, templest. B)i think Xisto does not implement autoupgrade since Xisto wants to serve as many free host members as possible... nowadays, it's on a request-as-needed basis. just pm admin with the upgrade request you need and he'll grant your request.

    Gmail

seems gmail stopped giving out invites already (for the meantime)... so unused/unregistered gmail invites are very rare nowadays. if you can still grab one these days, consider yourself lucky! got mine at gmailswap days before invites became scarce. B)re: security threats - all hogwash! have read those white papers they have on the matter, and you will feel threatened only if you have anything to hide. LOL!
  16. you could still use grokker with the FREE 30-day fully-functional trial download that they offer. if you're satisfied after the trial period, only then should you consider buying it if you really need it.
  17. chelcy, you can configure the capture format profile for winfast if you want a less-than-1GB recording output for a 40-min program. you just have to tweak the capture profile settings to your desired output. with regards to your experience of "video is a little behind audio", you should turn ON your OVERLAY MODE option -- when just viewing & not recording a tv program. turn the OVERLAY MODE option OFF when recording -- the video and audio will already be synchronized. make this a habit: OVERLAY MODE ON -- viewing; OVERLAY MODE OFF -- recording. B)just a trick i learned from my use of my winfast.

  19. I'm using Leadtek's Winfast TV2000XP Delux edition. It's a PCI add-on card with TV, FM, MPEG compression and PVR (Personal Video Recording) functionality. Just google search for it if you want to check its other special features + other comparable tv tuner cards that fit your requirements and budget. typical tv signals (video+audio) require a 6-Mhz of bandwidth. read on how tv signals are transferred to viewers: http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/tv12.htm sorry to disappoint you BUT technology has been ahead of your idea for years already. anyone is capable of streaming data over the internet in a flash, without any hitches -- YOU JUST HAVE TO PAY THE PRICE TAG faster internet has been achieved already through cable connections, DSL connections, T1 connections, satellite connections, etc -- which gives the results you "envision" lately. if you have the cash to burn, you can get the fast internet you want.

    Google Bombs

so what does these so-called google bombs do? would it generate more hits to a site? would a site get delisted from google search pages when it appears on its pages? What results does it produce --- GOOD or BAD?
  21. what do u mean? please provide more details about your problem so we can better help you.
  22. shackman, the answer to your question should be pretty obvious even to you. :Dthe internet you experience is limited by the bandwidth you have... so if you're just using a 56K dialup (or lower), movies via internet would surely be a crawling experience. get a T1 connection (or, a DSL connection is good enough) and watching online movies would be a breeze. :Don TV tuner card video quality, it all depends on what kind of settings you have, and the type of tuner card you have. some tv tuner cards are better than others. as for dolby surround, i suppose sticking your dolby system to the audio output would be the best test if it works on the type of tv tuner card you have.
  23. You can now see Google results in a whole new way! Documents buried deep inside Googles database are now made available to you. This is invaluable when doing research, as the documents that you are looking for are not necessarily the most popular ones. You can now find what is relevant to you in just a few clicks. And you can configure your grokking experience by searching only documents in a certain language or date range, excluding adult content, and much more. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
  24. on your 80GB question: it is only *IF* you intend to use your TV tuner card to make recordings of TV programs you watch. with a big disk space, you could record a much higher video and audio quality. if not, then it is not really a requirement. installing the tv tuner card drivers would not eat too much space.on your next question: a tv tuner card simply makes your PC capable of receiving TV transmissions like an ordinary TV. it does not require you to be online to use a tv tuner card, so no streaming or downloading (in internet terms) occurs.
  25. i like the old forum order before better than the current one.currently, one has to dig deep to read the topics buried under sub-sub-directories... and forum structure is very confusing.since i am just on dialup with limited online time, i would like to save on the number of links i have to click before i get to read a topic... could we re-organize how our forum is arranged to make topic more accessible in the least number of clicks? a good forum structure would have a MAIN DIR+SUBDIR > TOPIC, where a forum member or guest would get on a topic of choice on his second click. other members, ur thoughts please?
