When I Changed my graphics card, my monitor still tells me: No Signal.. why? Dell Computer "shuts Down" When Opening Email I have a Dell optiplex gx270, when I first got it everything was fine until my monitr started going blank and dispalyin a NO SIGNAL message.. I changed the monitor and still the same thing.. I sent my computer to Circuit.City. And had a tech there change my graphics card and added more RAM... He(the tech)installed a NVIDIA geforce 6200... And ran the computer for a day. He saind there was nothing wrong... When I got home and turned on my compute less than 5 mins, my screen went blank and said NO SIGNAL... "Extended" ascii charactors Special Characters In Notepad Replying to FeedbackerAs Herbert noted above, notepad is reasonably accurate in producing charactors from ALT-32 - ALT 126. But it produces unreliable results with values greater than 126. The original question was this: "How do I put extended ASCII characters in notepad and/or wordpad." Note that the "extended ASCII character set" begins at 128(hex 80) and ends at 255(hex FF). So, is there way to type "extended" ascii charactors in notepad? The best answer I have is neither Yes or No! The answer is: Somewhat! I have both researched & experimented extensively, and can say this much: Notepad in XP is totally weird when it comes to entering these charactors, and you will get very unpredictable results. For Example: Try entering ALT-155 in notepad. The result is the Cent sign (�)(decimal 162 hex A2). Save & open the file in a hex editor, and you will see that the actual charactor is hex A2 or in decimal 162, not the 155 you requested. Repeat the same test in edit.Com and you will see that you get a percent sign in the display, but when checked in your hex editor, the hex value of the charactor is hex 9B or in decimal 155. This is exactly what you requested. Now open the file you creadted with edit.Com in notepad. You will see that notepad displays the charactor as a "Single right-pointing angle quotation mark", not the "Cent sign that you saw in edit.Com. I cannot tell you why the charactors are displayed differently in edit.Com than in notepad, except that it appears that there are several different versions of the "extended ASCII character set" http://www.ascii-code.com/ http://www.cdrummond.qc.ca/cegep/informat/Professeurs/Alain/files/ascii.Htm The first table appears to be the most common and the one used by notepad. The second table appears to be the one used by edit.Com. What I can say absolutely for sure after hours of experimenting: Edit.Com is reliable when typing "Extended" ascii charactors, and will give you the actual charactor(in hex) that corresponds to the charactor value you requested with ALT-(num). BUT ... The display in edit will be different than the display you will see if you open the same file in notepad, or most other editors(This corresponds to a different version of the extended ascii table, as seen by viewing the links to the 2 tables above.) Notepad is accurate in producing charactors from ALT-32 - ALT 126. But it produces unreliable results with values greater than 126. It appears to me through experimentation, that notepad and most editors other than edit.Com are substituting the value you entered with the value that corresponds to another version of the ascii table. In conclusion, I can tell you this: Something Is Rotten In Denmark ... But I can't tell you why. Use edit.Com for accuracy, but expect a different display in most other environments. A lot of misinformation Coldfusion Vs. Php Many of these posts contain a great amount of incorrect information regarding Coldfusion. In my experience, 90% of people who dislike Coldfusion have either no, or very little experience with it, and the experience they have is often 5+ years old. I think Coldfusion gets a bad reputation because it is indeed so easy to learn, and because of this, theres a lot of bad code out there. However, comparing noob-level CF to more advanced PHP is certainly not a fair comparison. Coldfusion, written by competent developers, is both clean and highly modular. Also, one thing people mention is that if you know C/C++, learning PHP is easier than CF. This statement shows the ignorance of most people regarding coldfusion. 90% of coldfusion can written in a C-style manner, called 'cfscript'. I think there are certainly benefits to each. PHP is free, and more widely supported, and theres a lot of free stuff written in it. CF is backed by a larger company and can access any Java libraries at will. Personally, I prefer Coldfusion. I like the language more (seems cleaner), and the rapid development factor makes a difference -- I can write half the code to do the same things in PHP. There are also a lot of built in, officially supported features that are very nice, including automatic PDF creation from HTML content (though, I'm sure many of the built-in features of CF have been created by someone for php). As for high-level performance issues, I can't really comment, as I have no experience in web apps with huge amounts of traffic (hey, I'm not doin the sales, lol), but I've heard the rumors regarding CF's performance as well. I have also heard that CF8, the latest version greatly increased enterprise-level performance, and there are plenty of bigger sites out there running it. It all comes down to whats right for you. Afrothunder has some excellent points. However, as systems get faster Java's speed in no longer critical issue. If you are new to programming, Java is the perfect language to learn computer concepts. I teach Adnanced Placement Computer Science in high school. I have taught BASIC, Pascal, C++ and now Java to high students. Try teaching students to write game programs for their cell phones with C++ and you will appreciate Java's portability. Everything you need to start programming in Java is free, I repeat FREE. Even the J2ME to create programs for cell phones is free. So far based on my personal experience and from feedback I have received at blogs like this, the majority of negative comments on Java seem to come from C++ programmers who have less than one year serious experience with Java.
