  1. I have tried Microsoft's Expression Web. I never liked it. I never liked frontpage either. Sure the interface looked nice and all but it didn't do much to help me. Dreamweaver is better but in terms of price, expression web will probably be pretty good for those that prefer WYSIWYG (I think that's the acronym) editing. I don't like WYSIWYG editing, and so prefer Notepad++. I uninstalled Expression Web just the day after I got it.
  2. Nothing is wrong with the number "42" it is just that it pops up in so many places, its not funny. Like the current time is 10:42 when I'm typing this sentence. Meh, Its 10:43 now... And because it pops up everywhere is what's weird about it...
  3. So... One of my friends once told me that he hates the number "42" because it always keeps coming up all the time. So... I tried it myself and in fact (for me) it did come up all the time!So... I have decided to "create" this test to see if "42" is spread all across the globe or if it is just confined to a person'simagination and awareness...So... The test is basically trying to see how many "42"'s you can spot in a day both directly and indirectly.i.e. I see atleast one "42" everyday since I always have a Battlefield 2142 cover near my computer and I sometimes play it...more examples of "42" Times, i.e. 11:42PM, your friend typing in "The answer to life, the universe, and everything" in Google,Turning to page "42" in a book... etcSo... Let the game begin. Please report back everyday and see how many "42"'s you spotted. And please don't count the "42"'s in this thread (including thread title and thread description...) And please don't cheat since there is no award. And please spread it! The more 42's the merrier! So go and hunt 42's! (metaphorically, maybe... )
  4. The idea is really good and I totally agree with it. Except there are several minor flaws with the idea of ratings...For example mallory doesn't like victor. Mallory creates 5 different accounts using different proxies. Logs in and gives Victor many bad reviews (i.e. SPAM! Bad Spelling, etc)... So Victor will get less credits per post.A way to combat this "flaw" would be for people to only be able to rate a topic after they get above "x" number of posts and don't have warnings (not sure about that one)... That way, Mallory would have to get "x" posts for each of Mallory's accounts before being able to rate Victor as a bad person. Also consider a "credit bank" where a user can store his or her's credits safely and all the credits inside the "bank" aren't affected by the fifteen-minutley deduction of credits and that they would be able to take them out at will. The idea may seem a bit "unnecessary" but it would be a very good comeback for people that somehow "forget" about Xisto for a while and go under lets say... -25 credits. Their hosting is on the verge of extinction. And they don't have the time to post. They open up the Credit System and go into their bank and pull out lets say 30 credits they put in there earlier.Problem solved...
  5. The thing is... An MMORPG can mean a LOT of things... Take SGW (Stargate Wars) as an example... Even though it IS browser based, it is still classified as an MMORPG...But considering you want to make an MMORPG out of C++/C etc then... Get a Game Engine first unless you want to program your own engine. Start with something simple first. i.e. Greyish blobs of un-textured objects having basic controls on a flat map.And then move on to like textured blobs having more advanced controls on a terrain, and vice versa.First, aim for something REALLY high. Make that your goal and slowly build up towards it. If you can just have greyish objects that can be controlled from each different computer over an online network with a sufficient GUI and that. Just texture the grey objects and voilah... A MMORPG with *not so good* graphics...Start off with a basic principle. It can easily be compared to making a web page. You don't just star at the top and make your way down designing all the graphics as you go. You would star with a basic layout first and then add the graphics, etc...Also consider getting sponsorships if you are really serious about making an MMORPG. Consider making it open-source as then you would probably benefit from a volunteer "Development Team"...Good luck,
  6. Well, "Doomsday" passed and to give a tribute to "Doomsday" I watched the Doctor Who episode "Doomsday"...Anywhom...We haven't died yet. We will eventually die. But the thing is... LHC was only testing if it was working and if the magnets and such were all aligned probably and the helium cooling system XD (Helium>Nitrogen)... But it should start doing the REAL experiments very soon...And it is scheduled to be upgraded into a SLHC (Super Large Hadron Collider) during 2012 (Which is the year the mayan calendar stops)...Meh, we are still alive... LHC is like when cars were just made. People thought travelling at 50km/h was a health risk... In like 50 years time (if we live that long) humanity will be saying similar things to the LHC test...
  7. So today at school... Everybody shouts "We're all going to DIE!!! AHH!!!" That annoys me so much. They have absolutely NO idea what the LHC actually does, and most of the peers just say that it is trying to re-create a black hole. The LHC CANNOT create a black hole. It doesn't have the mass to create it. Even if it does it would take a long time to consume all of the Earth (And a theory brought up by a friend suggested that it wouldn't even consume the Earth, and because of its gravitational potential, would disrupt the Earth's rotation around the sun and the black hole would be pulled towards the Sun instead of staying right inside CERN...)But even IF a black hole IS created, Hawking Radiation (If it exists, which I REALLY hope does) would render the black hole non-existent before it even showed up on Atlas' scanners (might be an exaggeration though... :?)But there are things worse than a black hole (metaphorically) and that is strangelets. They are called strangelets because they are strange and do not behave in any way that is stated by the laws of physics meaning they could be anything and could do anything... But the main theory suggests that they cause fusion reactions on whatever they touch and as a result turns whatever they touch into more strangelets. But LHC won't go wrong. This is like the time 11:59 59 Dec 31st 1999 again. There is like a 0.02% (or something) percent chance that LHC will malfunction. Even if it does, its probably an overheat in one of its magnets or a mouse chews though a technician's mouse cable (which if this were Final Destination would of course lead off in a much worse direction). LHC will NOT go wrong! Tell this to everyone! Even if it does we will NOT die today because of the LHC! Spread the word! Just because someone that looks like Gordan Freeman is in charge of the LHC's project does NOT mean that something will go wrong. We might as well expect LHC to go wrong on [somedate] in 2012.LHC will probably not succeed... The 12 million Gigabytes of data will probably just be a bunch of information that we already know. I say, abandon the LHC and make a VLHC! (Very Large Hadron Collider)
  8. If you are having a forums. Consider integrating your website into whatever forum software you are choosing (i.e. in Other words, have your homepage as a portal for whatever forum software you are going to use (which I highly recomment phpBB3.x.x))Integrating your site with your forum would mean you can share sessions (i.e. You can have logins, and you can register etc without having to enter the forum's register/login etc)Or consider using a CMS software (i.e. I personally recommend Joomla! For this though I still prefer no CMS...)With the Navigation bar, use a CSS navigation bar creator to first get the code and then if you want, modify it to fit your website...What are you aiming for your homepage? Full integration with your forum software (Which you should go with a portal), partially integrated (Which you should make your own, i.e. For phpBB3.x.x all you need to do is put a few lines of code and you can use its templating system, language system, etc), or if you want it separate but with logins (Which I recommend you use a CMS, though CMS such as Joomla! can be integrated with phpBB3.x.x), or if you just want the PHP to be as simple as possible and only use the INCLUDE, REQUIRE (which I recommend over INCLUDE) tags...Try to aim high up and don't start small as the best way to learn is to "learn-as-you-go" and not learn a bit, use it, learn more use it...Also, to get more users use less graphics and focus on the content at the start. And only use graphics when necessary so you can keep the dialup users returning. Also make sure that all your code gets validated before its gets uploaded. Try not to directly edit things from cPanel's filemanager. Get Apache (or something) and do some localhost (127.0.0.1) testing before you upload with multiple browsers (including IE6) just to make sure it displays properly so that nobody would get missing info.
  9. Except black holes aren't what I'm afraid of... Sure, it can't do anything to damage the Earth... Until... Strangelets are created. Think of Strangelets as "Tiberium" almost. They are unknown particles that cause fusion reactions to make other particles turn into more strangelets...It wouldn't happen if the collision chamber and nearby was at a 100% vacuum and the walls of the Large hadron collider's insides were far enough so that the strangelets lose their kinetic force through the magnetic forces for them to start a reaction...Black holes CANNOT be produced by the Large Hadron Collider! It is like saying that two cars colliding head-on will result in them fusing together in an atomically perfect atomic structure! We can't just "make" a black hole. The only things capable of making black holes are supernova's and more black holes (which fuse to form a single black hole, in an extremely unspectacular and bland invisible fashion...)
  10. Google Operating system has ALREADY been made... Just not available to the public. It is called (well, nicknamed) "Goobuntu" from the name, you can probably easily tell that it is either a Google modified version of uBuntu or just Google modified version of a plain Linux Kernel... Google isn't "evil" like microsoft... Their slogan says so... :)But the thing is... hmm... unlike before I don't have much to ramble on about... :?Anywhom... If both were to invade each other's "area" of business, then Microsoft would certainly lose... If Google gets shut down, the entire internet would basically "collapse" well, maybe not collapse but something similar... If Microsoft were to become defunct, then its another happy day for Linus...
  11. That's like saying it will be possible for your computer to be able to prove that pi = e... But with the idea of a "sonic" screwdriver, nigh impossible... It would probably be possible if it were a magnetic screw driver (though, I highly doubt it would be effective)... Because, even if the screw needs a certain frequency just to move, it will move irregularly and won't spin, but it MIGHT be possible to have the screw instead of "screwing" into the material, but more of "locking" in to the material and the frequency is used to "unlock" the screw and allow it to be "plied" out...
  12. No point in using Dreamweaver...Just get Notepad++ there's nothing bad about it... It is better than Dreamweaver. In fact, I have totally decommissioned Dreamweaver, I don't need to anymore after I found Notepad ++...@moutonoir The thing is, if you do that, you wouldn't know what tags to use in the first place. I mean, if you keep only to one site that uses tables, you would get really good with tables and leave out <div>s entirely (which is what I did... )So... yeah...
  13. I first learned the original HTML like 5 years ago. I didn't 'really' learn it as it (for me) was considered more as a 'if I got nothing else to do, I'll learn HTML' thing... I learned it by viewing the source-code of websites (primarily a C&C: Red Alert fansite), but I eventually got 'into' it and until about a year ago, I started to learn XHTML... It changed my coding practices immediately...Now I'm still learning XHTML1.0 Strict (Though, I'm slowly 'migrating' to XHTML 1.1). I've always wanted to learn XML but never understood how XSL worked (heard its like CSS, but to me, its like comparing English to Assembly)I'm learning CSS which is a great help on my current phpBB3 style project (Which I do NOT intend on releasing)...I just cannot learn all the CSS/XHTML tags by heart, there are just too many of them... And if I don't understand a tag, I will search it up on Google or W3Schools (W3Schools helped me a lot in learning XHTML1.0Strict). The thing with HTML, you shouldn't learn it... You should learn XHTML but even XHTML on its own doesn't do much... Just like 'Sonesay' said, also learn CSS and if you want to/have time learn Javascript AND PHP... Learning things just by reading books and memorising tags is nothing. To REALLY learn, you shouldn't rely on books, instead, right click and view source and see what the tags do. With PHP download some open-source PHP scripts and see how they've done it... etc...Good Luck on Learning X/HTML (If you are going to learn it)
  14. Trap17 = 17 Traps But the thing is... With the name Xisto, it is pretty catchy, and unlike other hosts the subdomain doesn't look 'noob-ish'...i.e. what subdomain sounds more 'professional' if you were to visit a website1 'subdomain.trap17.com'2 'subdomain.00123-freehosting.com'So...? Which one?I didn't think that Xisto would be serious about their hosting at first glance but after a while they seemed really good...
  15. The thing is... I agree nVidia only targets the performance factor and nothing else, really...I mean, come on! ATI's 4870X2 has 1600 stream processors! It's fabrication process is better. It uses more power (which is a bad thing though... )Now, the 4870X2 has basically won. Unless there is any 'GROUNDBREAKING' evidence to make me possibly change my mind, its the 4870X2...
  16. Trap17 is ultimate... :)I remember when I used to go webhost hunting... I would probably switch webhosts once every week because my website (which clearly conforms to that webhost's terms and conditions) gets deleted, I find a better webhost, etc...Then I found Xisto... At first, I didn't really get how the credit system worked, and I made some posts and applied for hosting package 1... It wasn't the best hosting package out there but because of Xisto's great community I stayed here... About like 6 months later, I signed up for Hosting Package 2... Now... hosting package 2 is the best free hosting package out there... Xisto gives you basically unlimited access to cPanel, you can have unlimited SQL databases, etc... Seriously... Xisto's Hosting Package 2 is better than so many paid hosting providers out there. And with the new "Free Domain" thing, Xisto is even better!I told many of my friends about Xisto... Sadly, many weren't interested in making websites, and the only one that was couldn't be stuffed losing 1 credit per day...
  17. I'm starting from scratch... I have no desktop at the moment...hmm... But considering I just checked prices for the 4870X2 and the GTX280, I can probably get two GTX280's for the price of one 4870X2 plus around about AU$150-AU$200...My decision has suddenly swayed A LOT now that you mention Autodesk favours nVidia... and that nVidia has better OpenGL support...
  18. So... I've come to the point where I have to choose which graphics card is better...The AMD ATI HD4870X2 or the nVidia GeForce GTX280...On paper, the 4870X2 beats the GTX280 by far (you're comparing like 2.4teraflops to 1 teraflop, and 1600 stream processors to not even half that number), but in gameplay, it says different... There is little to no difference in Crysis, there's little difference in many games...But the thing is... Which card is better? Don't talk about price difference as here (In Australia) the 4870X2 is only AU$50 more...But remember, gaming is not the only thing I do... After seeing some 3DMark Vantage results, the 4870X2's beats the GTX280's...I render in 3ds Max, keep that in mind... So the thing is... which graphics card is better?I've never been a fan of slapping 2 GPU's next to each other and saying "BAM! A new graphics card" but ATI needs 2 GPU's to fight off nVidia, whilst nVIdia only needs one...And also the fact that the newer Generation nVidia cards have PhysX built-in while ATI graphics cards don't...My friend even suggested which graphics card looked better! So... People of Xisto (Xisto'ers) what graphics card is better? (not in teraflops) but in other words, which one should I get?EDIT: Keep in mind, that the reason why I don't just go and buy the 4870X2 is because I don't like dual-GPU graphics cards... makes me uneasy... But the 4870X2 is too much of an offer to pass up...
  19. <br /><br /><br /> That idea is flawed in itself because then so many users will abuse it. Because non-hosted members don't lose credits each day, they could just build up alot of credits (i.e. 500 or so) very easily, apply for hosting + domain and BAM! They don't have to post for 320 days and all that hosting space is wasted...
  20. I just had an idea... :)What if there was something that allowed you to 'refresh' your hosting account? i.e. Get new subdomain, etc without terminating your hosting and everything on it...I mean it'd be a good idea and save the trouble for people to backup everything on their hosting account, terminate their account and get 10 or 30 credits again and re-apply for hosting. This idea relies on the fact that all it does is 'rename' the hosting folder for the user...And another idea... Xisto probably already is the world's best free web host but why not make it better by making more hosting packages and allowing the user to switch between them (i.e. If a user has a very good website running, they should be able to choose a hosting package that with maybe around 20GB bandwidth, 300MB HDD, etc and takes 2 credits average every 24 hours), and other plans to more suit what the users need (i.e. 0.5 credits average every 24 hours but only 100MB Bandwidth + 20MB HDD) etc And having the fact that users should be able to switch plans with a selection of a radio button, a check of a checkbox and a click of a 'submit' button...It would seriously increase Xisto's popularity because if Opaque decides to make the different inter-changeable hosting plans then Xisto will not only be the best free web host around in the world but probably also be the most customizable host in the world!
  21. Here's an option...An ability to "pause" your account, i.e. Your hosting account basically gets suspended but isn't terminated... After a set time the account becomes "unsuspended" During suspension, you don't lose any credits and to make it so that people won't abuse this feature don't or slowly get credits (i.e. only 60% of what you'd get for a 100 words or so). Also another idea... To increase Xisto's popularity maybe install the "Army System" modification for IPB and let the members play and maybe the highest-ranking person is exempt to the credit deduction rule or something. But the thing is... I would much rather a "account suspension" since I don't really need my website right now and I'm very busy trying to keep my account still active. The only problem with terminating my account is that I still sometimes use my account to test things out on a live server so I can't termainte it...
  22. Ah... Google - Don't be Evil is probably the world's best large corporation of all-time...They're GMail is just wonderful to use and I always use it. I have given up on Hotmail and Yahoo! And GMail is all I need... :)But the thing with GMail, is that it loads too slowly for people with slower internet connections but in my opinion, the AJAX is worth the trouble (though I load it up in HTML if my bandwidth runs out)
  23. But the thing is... If we were to have photosynthesis... We would be green AND the fact that we couldn't wear any clothes or else it would not work...
  24. 13. Re-Install Your operating system I mean, SURE you have AMPLE anti-virus applications, SURE you have not been visiting certain "websites", SURE you haven't picked up any "applications that download a specific type of pictures"... Just back up your data, get out that rusty'ol OS installation disk and BAM! 3 Hours or so of your life gone!
  25. wtf? phpBB and phpNuke are totally different things! If you are good at coding in php, then turn phpBB into a CMS (relatively simple, if you don't decide on ACP integration as well... :|) phpNuke is 100% CMS...I never liked phpNuke because of the fact the ALL of the skins never looked good and always followed a "specific" layout...There are plenty of portals for phpBB (i.e. Stargate Portal, Board3Portal, etc) which makes it SO many times better than phpNuke, but if you are going to go for a pure CMS, then go with Joomla! or something...
