  1. The Linux Poll has been updated and now you'll find the names of a lot of common/uncommon, popular/less popular, new and old linux distributions on the list, that were missing earlier. I hope you'll have a much extensive choice to pick your favourite flavour of linux from Poll away.... To find out more about these linux ditros, visit: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
  2. Thats because that 512Kbps (Kilobit per second) = ( 512 / 8 ) = approx. 64KiloByte per second effective download speed is NOT SHARED by you alone and split into probably 100's of neighbouring home.. None of the service providers ever mention that, the particular 512Kbps connection is NOT DEDICATED to you..they just mention their avg. backbone speed and let it off at that - leaving all the subscribers to make whatever meaning they can, out of it
  3. They must be pretty good then, for a company whose name or products haven't ever showed up on any kind of news or reviews !! I find it hard to believe MS, who's used to taking over other well-established companies, is picking up a debutante from the market and trying to market their product (or maybe the company's into designing localized custom sw and hasn't yet hit the world market - which brings us to the same point) !!! God knows what they are upto now
  4. If you guys want to see a really cool site entirely developed in flash - and boasts some really snazzy flash effects, try this: http://www.eye4u.com/ Once you are there follow the links till you get to their main menu and THEN, check out the SHOWCASE they have - these guys have designed the flash sites for some BIG companies around the world.. Their showcase is worth spending HOURS ... they display some innovative blend of technique and colors.. Have fun
  5. Hi all, The more serious programmers here should consider using the Open Source IDE that IBM has been developing for a while now. It's free, it's immensely powerful and best of all - it's not meant for any specific platform. With the proper plugins and a suitable backend compiler you can make it compile C++, Java or any of the common programming languages. It boasts Syntax Highlighting, Auto Keyword/Syntax Completion and loads of other features tightly integrated into one nice package. Here's a direct quote from their site: Grab it @ http://www.eclipse.org/
  6. Try DOSBox for Linux at least you can play some of the golden oldies...All right - this topic is starting all over again and is going to fill up pages after pages with meaningless ramblings. Am locking it. End of story. Hope all of you had fun
  7. Haven't played any of the recent RPGs but out of all the gaming genres RPGs and Simulations are my most favourite.... That reminds me - among some of the old RPGs - the best ones I played are:1. The Longest Journey - fantastic storyline spanning 5 cds2. A series of 5 games called Quest for Glory 1 - 5 aka Hero's Quest by Sierra - have any of you played this series ?? The first 2 episodes have BAD CGA based Graphics - though there was a VGA remake of the first part. But the storyline was simply AWESOME and uncomparable. Each game could be played on it's own and had it's individual storyline - but if you played all 5 in a row, all the stories would link up with each other and form this amazingly long and winding & fantastic storyline... somewhat the way all the Robot and Foundation books in Asimov's series are linked up back to back to form a giant story spanning some 22 books... :PYou guys shud give it a try - though the first 2 parts probably need a dos emulator to run on the present windows machines.. work fine on win 98 though.
  8. Nopes, not at all - your cPanel files reside elsewhere on the server. Normally when you login you you are placed in a directory containing your public_html folder along with several others. Here's my directory listing - I probably have a lot more files than a fresh account as I've tried out a lot of options from cPanel which would have created the "." prefixed configuration files as you can see in here. If you didn't delete any of these files (or even if you did) judging from the files present in here - I don't think your cPanel will be affected anyhow. Why don't you simply log into your cPanel and find out !! Nothing like doing it hands on - then you know for sure All the best
  9. If those files are what you found on the server right after your first login, DO NOT WORRY!! They are immaterial and wouldn't hamper with your hosting account in any way. Just go ahead and upload you page, but make sure that the public_html directory still exists, coz that's where you have to place all your website files. All the best..
  10. What brand are you using - I've never heard of such a thing. All IBM compliant systems should be able to boot from any primary partition (in case of windows) and even logical drives in extended partitions (in case of *nix). Why don't you try wiping out all partitions and re-create everything from scratch - unless you have a lot of data that you want to backup and are unable to access the partitions coz they are NTFS !! In that case you will be in a BIG FIX !! In that case, you can use this freeware tool called NTFS Reader for DOS available @ http://www.ntfs.com/products.htm which if used in conjunction with a dos boot disk - will be able to read you NTFS patitions.. Here's a brief report on the software: They've got FREEWARE boot images for both FLOPPIES AND BOOTABLE CDS along with the NTFS Reader. Hope this helps
  11. i don't think so amkint.. as qwijibow said, if they still retain the inner working core of *nix/bsd and used just the windows gui on top - then the system would inherit all the security features of linux as well as its immense power of handling multi-user networked environments... along with that it will inherit the the way *nix handles user/file rights which presently makes it so difficult for viruses to spread on *nix platforms... i think it's a brilliant idea except that MS & Open Source doesn't go hand in hand - even in the wildest dreams. And imbibing a part of the *nix kernel into their OS would in effect deliver a rock solid blow to their bloated up ego... it would be their clearcut admittance as to which is the better OS among the two
  12. Sorry cryptonx can't help but laugh at those statistics. I knew of a dedicated mailserver (that's probably still running) at one of these universities back home - I'm talking about 6 years back. It was a measly Pentium Pro system running on one of the relatively earlier versions of Linux. It boasted an uptime of 3 years at that time, and when I revisited a few years back it was still up without a single reboot - which made it a total of 5 years I think. It was so dedicated to it's work, that the admin pulled out the monitor and keyboard and let it just lie in one corner of the room and carry on its work without any disturbance Well, thats whats called REAL UPTIME ....
  13. No you are quite right minnieadkins. The standard download/upload speeds are measured in KiloBITS and MegaBITS as opposed to what most of us think. Thus, the actual download speed in our well recognized KiloByte/MegaByte format would be, what you get by dividing this KiloBit/MegaBit figure by 8. As you can see it applies to both Kbps and Mbps. According to this, 384Kbps/s would obviously be cheaper than 1Mbps/s 384Kbps / 8 = 48KiloBytes/s 1Mbps ( 1024Kbps ) / 8 = 128KiloByte/s You can clearly make out from these figures which is the faster connection and therefore should cost more
  14. Thanks that was an interesting discussion and gave me a few ideas to come up with a workaround. I'll see if I can do it and post the results back here..Thanks again.
  15. Haha cool.. I've always wanted to have a dual display - but never got around to setting it up.. From a designers perspective it does seem that I'll be great help in having all your tools and designing screen so well spaced out - Leaves a lot more room to concentrate on what you are doing and avoid all that ugly cluttering of tools... Now my question is: what about those dialog boxes that are displayed right in the middle - do they split up and (lol) show one half each on each of the monitors ?? Or you can customize them somehow to pop up as whole on either screen... ??
  16. Nils could you make a post here elaborating on what you said about having a "robots.txt" file to stop bots from finding a page that is in developmental stage ?? I think that'll be a good addition in here...Thanks
  17. If you are talking about switching to just vanilla "C" from Java then yeah - you got some biiiig problems lying ahead.. but if it is "C++" following the OOP model, then I think Java is far easier to get a grasp of the OOP concept, coz you CANNOT write your programs otherwise... Everything starts and ends with a "Class"... switching to OOP in C++ is a lot easier after that - just a little variation in syntax.
  18. hey don't worry coder2k.. I wasn't retorting either.. in fact i was supporting what you said and adding in some more ;)all the best
  19. Hey amkint, Even I've a couple of VISA ELECTRON debit cards, but it's that electron part that prohibits it from being used online. Have you ever used it to buy anything online ? I've tried earlier and never could. The only response I got from my bank is that the ELECTRON stamped cards are ONLY to be used on Card Swiping Terminals and ATM Machines. In all probablity, your card number is NOT ENGRAVED on your card, but just printed. I don't know much about all the different card formats, but I've noticed that mostly you can use the cards with engraved lettering online (and with paypal)... and electrons - not at all - at least the ones you get in thailand. Now since all these VISA, MasterCard, VISA Electron etc.. are supposed to conform to certain worldwide standards, I think the same rule applies to your card too... specially lol.. the card from an indian PUBLIC Sector Bank..lol.. yeah tell me about them (i've had my own share of experiences with them).... I was going to tell you to cross check with your bank again - but then when I read what bank it is - errr... you indeed would have a hardpressed time with them. I'm not sure though whether you'll be able to receive payments. You should check up on the different types of accounts PayPal has - I think the basic one doesn't permit you to receive payment. In case they do, try sending in a check or wire transfer the money to them.. Once that is put into your account - you can easily go off on a shopping spree. Oh yeah one more thing - that Add Card button is visible in all the account types - it's their method of verifying your authenticity. If you have a credit card or some card that's accepted online, (this is what they did earlier) they'd charge your card for a couple of dollars and when the statement of charge appears on your credit card bill, you get a certain Code Number along with that .. it's this Code Number that you got to go back to PayPal and enter - to prove that you are indeed the authentic cardholder....so there... All the best with your bank... lol Why not try switch to HSBC or Standard Chartered ?? P.S. I'm from India too Calcutta.. but now settled in Thailand
  20. Thats a brilliant idea qwijibow - if MS really would split out the GUI from the kernel and concentrate more on developing a rock solid & much more stabler kernel - imagine what could that achieve !! As for the MS GUI - I don't have any complaints whatsoever - but if the core of the OS is so buggy - what good will having an excellent GUI do ?? Moreover, for some reason MS just cannot get rid of it's memory leakage problems, which leads to such bad uptimes and frequent reboots for windows based systems. If someone could knock some sense into MS - people wouldn't think of shifting over to some other platform & still be using their fav. "OS"!! Imagine how peaceful a world we'll live in without having to engage ourselves in this endless debate about the best OS to use....
  21. HI, Do you guys know of any sort of memory dump tool that will allow you to save old dos games without the game save option ? Later on you just reload it back and start the game from the point where you left off... are there any such tools ? Thanks
  22. szupie: Since you quoted Asimov, why not try and build the cyborgs with the Three Laws of Robotics (or Four, if the Zeroeth law is taken into account) hardcoded into their brain. Do you know that those three laws of robotics have been successfully programmed into a research prototype AI system at MIT and it was found to behave quite similar to what Asimov predicted. I say, he's shown us a way - now it's upto us to go ahead and implement it the RIGHT WAY... as to what the Right Way is, only time can tell.....
  23. I believe we've had a very long & winding debate (quite lively though) and everyone got to put in their own views - which is all nice. Now it's dragging on a little to far and has come down to just one liners. I don't see the point of rambling round and round on the same thing. Plus there are hundreds of other similar threads on browser war going on... So...I guess, I'm going to lock it up Folks, 'was fun...
  24. hihihihi88: I think you should follow coder2ks advice and use phpMyAdmin to back it up. The method I've mentioned here albeit gives you much more flexibity and control, but is far more compicated and is meant for a little MySQL users. Once you start getting hang of all the MySQL commands and syntaxes - you could try using my method. Meanwhile I suggest (whether you are running on Linux or Windows) you to grab a copy of MySQL ( http://www.mysql.com/ ), if you dont have one already - and try out all this on your home computer. That will somewhat familiarize you with the working environment and you'll see light for sure There are lots of good documentation too on their site and a very helpful & dedicated MySQL support forum too - so you won't be left groping in the dark. All the best
  25. Extremely well versed post Nils and "Suggestion-Packed" I'm requesting the viewers to come up with more such excellent suggestions and add in to this post. All are welcome. Lets all make Xisto forums/Webhosting an object of envy for all other such existing services Three cheers to Xisto...
