Dear members, I'm in the process of creating sample OpenSearch Plugins for a wide-variety of Content Management / Bulletin Board Systems / Blogs - so that they can serve as examples for anyone who wishes to install one for their site. I've already come up with a few for the most common ones like WordPress, IPB etc. which I regularly use. Where I need help from you guys, is in finding out the URL based Search Strings for other such web-apps that you may be using.. for example Mambo / Joomla / Drupal ... any other blogging platform and any bulletin board system other than IPB and SMF. So what is this Search String? If you don't know what I mean by the Search String, here's an example. If you search for the phrase "Local Website Archive" at Xisto, and notice the URL in the browser's address bar, you'll see something like this: http://forums.xisto.com/index.php?act=Searwebsite+archive That is the Search String. It reveals information on how the software passes on the search keywords to it's search routine as well as information on which file the search functions are located. That information is extremely necessary for me to come up with these plugins - and that's where I seek help from you. How do I go about finding this string? All you need to do is perform a normal search on any of the web-apps you regularly use and then paste here the URL that comes up in your browser's address bar when the search results are displayed. It'll be convenient if you make the submission in the following example format. ============================================================= Search String for XXXX CMS/Blog/BBS Site URL Site Software The Search String Keywords used for the search ============================================================= That should be enough. Actually there's a way of detecting the outbound URL whenever you navigate away from the current domain. I'm not sure of the functions involved but it's primarily based on JavaScript and used by many of the scripts that track which AdSense Ad you clicked on and subsequently which URL you landed up on. Studying the innards such scripts might help you... here's one I'm using as of now: Contextual Tracker. However, AFAIK such scripts have their limitations. If we take Contextual Tracker for example, it's unable to track outbound URLs from Firefox, as it happens to be one of the more secure browsers. In contrast, Internet Explorer reveals the outbound URLs just fine

I got the 3 column layout from one of the CSS Tutorial sites and the biggest advantage of my layout is that the Center column comes up first. That is a MUST if you're concerned about SE-Optimization of your pages. The layout you've shown makes the two side columns come up first. Crawlers don't like that kinda sites Otherwise it'd have been a good layout. Any alternatives ???

What I mean is that, if I stuff in a lot of content in the Center column, it expands below and covers up the footer. What's the CSS trick, that'll make it move down along with the content ??

Hey guys, I'm helping out a friend in designing a site for his business and got stuck with JS/CSS Dropdown menu. Searching around I found one of the easiest to implement scripts at Dynamic Drive. I managed to implement the script partially, i.e. got the top menu showing up. Looked good so far. Here's the screenshot: After defining the menu divs, you're supposed to call the script that performs the dropdown action using a code like this: <script type="text/javascript">cssdropdown.startchrome("name_of_main_menu_div");</script> When I call the function, my page layout gets totally garbled and the dropdown function never works. Here's how it looks like... Do the web-design pros out here have an idea why it's getting messed up like this ? Today, while analysing my site's referrers, I found three odd domains pointing to a particular article on my site (Chaos Laboratory). All three domains are running a bulletin board system and the links came from a certain post in each. Here are the referring posts: http://ww2.campusblender.com/?folio=9POR7JU99 http://www.partyeastcarolina.com/message_topic.aspx?topic=251569 http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ What drew my attention to it was the topic ID in each link which were 100% identical. So I decided to take a look at those links and to my utter surprise found that in each case the whole thread was 100% identical, including the users who posted in it. A little further investigation revealed that except for partyeastcarolina.com, the other two domains belong to the same person named John Marsh.. http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/whois.ch/?ip=campusblender.com http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/whois.ch/?ip=partyapp.com Partyeastcarolina belongs to someone else... http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/whois.ch/?ip=astcarolina.com While this isn't causing any problem for me anyhow (am getting links from 3 domains for free ), I'm still surprised at how this thing workd.. is it that this guy is employing some sort of mirroring mechanism or is it the same database they're sharing through remote connection (OpaQue's deduction) ?? Does any of you have any ideas on multi-lingual site design? I'm looking for some resources/guides that'll show me the exact technique of achieving this... I am NOT looking for the Google Translate kind of option, where you've got a bunch of buttons on your site - clicking on which, will pass your page through Google Translator producing a totally garbled grammatical output in another language... What I want is to define every Text Element on the site as variables and depending on the lanugage of your choice, these variables are filled in from pre-defined language files containing key-value pair declarations of the same. I know this is very much possible in Firefox extensions - how do you go about doing the same for web-pages ? Thanks, m^e

Yup AdBlockers will surely chop the ads out... I took up Pyost's recommendation and changed the favicon. As for the Digg submission icon on the static pages, I'll have to figure out how to get rid of it, coz it's automatically embedded by a WP plug-in. As for the large rectangular Google Ads - I've figured out a way to spice them up... as I've shown in my post Create designer ads with AdSense Decorator and increase your CTR. It doesn't look half as stark and out of place now and blends in better. And trust me when I say that my CTR improved a hell lot because of that... I'm getting far more regular clicks now. Any more suggestions ??

Recently there's been a problem with having both www and non-www versions of your site working together, specially for Google Pagerank which is known to split your ranking over the www and non-www versions. That means these two might get two different pageranks based on the inbound links to either. Better solution is to maintain only a non-www version, so all inbound links point to that.
