  1. The oldest computer I handled is a PCXT, complete with occassionaly-failing 5.25 hard disk that only contained 20 megabytes.
  2. While Xisto makes it unique, trapdoor.com would be a good replacement suggestion, if ever. Dunno, that just came to my mind at random.
  3. Well, the reason I arrived to that conclusion is that we've optimized router, pc and client programs to use all the speed available, and yet when it comes to internet access... it still kinda falls short. Also, lately, ISP disconnections have been frequent, and we didn't used to experience that for a long time. the internet cafe operates almost 24 hours. The PCs are on Deep Freeze, so virus/worms are out of the question. And also, I don't think cooling for the routers is a factor for speed either, but it could help, I think. Unfortunately, they run side-by-side. I already warned him about that when the place was constructed years ago. Uh oh. Our data rack where the router/modem is kind of exceeds that distance. As for the kind of telephone wire used, it's the 3 prong brown telephone wire. We don't have our telephone lines inside the walls, so telephone wires originate from the signal box, then the brown wire that leads to our data rack, and then the dsl splitter. As for the interference when it comes to data signals, this applies to network cables too, right? I also found out that some of his cat5 cables run close together with electrical wires. The reason I'm nagging him about it is because there's been competitors around, and our internet speed is a little sluggish in comparison to theirs, despite using two DSLs and utilizing around 1mbit each DSL, so that's why we've been trying to go all out sorting it out.
  4. If there's any danger using cellphones, it's using them at the wrong time, ie. driving. As is, it's just as harmless as the PC. (you need to take a break sometimes though)
  5. TCPIP is the defacto standard in conventional communications between computers. This is the basis of the existence of the internet. Here, this should help. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TCPIP Subnetting is a technique to divide computer networks into managable segments, to prevent excessive usage of the IP address octets.
  6. My friend who operates an internet cafe has a problem; his telephone wires run parallel with the electricity wires. I told him to move it, but the current building plans don't have provisions for this (and the other plan, which is to rewire it, isn't without a big price tag too, because we'd have to pry the ceiling apart.)As a result, this affects DSL speed. He has two DSLs installed. Also, his dsl modem and router are close together.I proposed to him to dig an old cpu and use it as a linux router, but this would just act as a bridge and wouldn't solve the interference by the electrical wires. Then I thought of STP and UTPs in CAT5 cabling. The reason why STPs didn't succeed is because of the cost of shielding the wires (and the lower distance in comparison to UTPs).But my friend has a lot of surplus aluminum foil in stock... and I was wondering... would this be a good idea? Would wrapping the telephone wires inbound and outbound with aluminum foil help in reduction of the interference?
  7. However, phpbb has been tainted with bad security before, and since then, I chose not to use phpbb whenever possible.SMF is good and stable, a nice alternative to invision.
  8. Well, I've heard bad things about fasterfox raping limited-bandwidth websites, and among imageboard operators, they're a hated thing, so, regulate their usage whenever possible.
  9. If your router resets, it means it's being overwhelmed with information and data; This always happens with my Edimax router and when I get the money, it's going out of my datarack. >_<PS> This can happen when using azureus, shareaza, and filesharing apps.
  10. Also, it's not a good idea in running a server of a game you know nothing about. That results in poor administration, a broken game, and an unfulfillable experience. I've seen really broken private servers, so bad that the real legit servers were better. And you need a degree of networking experience to pull this off well.
  11. Is there also a way to apply this fix on multiple computers?I'm a computer technician as a sideline and I would appreciate a patch that does this without manual entry.
  12. DSL lines in where I live fluctuates or disconnects. Looks like it was a blessing in disguise when we switched over to cable internet. It tends to exceed DSL speeds though, and online gaming's not as bad as people claimed. However, DSL can accommodate lots of bandwidth, I just don't know if it rings true for cable. I used to run a webserver from my DSL connection to put its idle bandwidth into good use.
  13. Hahaha.I don't know if that kind of thing is feasible here in where I live, where poor people still have to pilfer electricity. This is a good idea though, and I'd like to see it in my place someday. I'm currently on cable internet, and it's okay; doesn't lag like DSL.
  14. Computers are only as good as the AI they have. It's safe to say it's not happening anytime soon.
