1. So, you're saying for the equivalent of $584 USD you can get a motorized system in its entirety? Including the receiver? That's not bad. Two things to remember: First, I could do it for that price by scaling down the size of the antenna and going cheaper with the receiver by buying one without the PVR capability and dual tuners. Also, this is the U.S. and corporations are out to screw over every dumb American consumer they can here. The receiver has a card slot, but the idea for me is to not have to pay for any programming any more. That's not going to last forever, like when www2 is forced down our throats, the internet will be heavily and accurately monitored by corporate interests like the satellite providers here and they'll come a knockin if you've been downloading decryption files off the internet. Home of the slave, land of the cowards... And if I'd bought the right receiver, I wouldn't care if they did come a knockin cause with the motorized dish, there are probably about eight good satellites up there with enough free programming to keep me happy. It's completely different on your side of the globe, though. I couldn't comment on that at all. I bought the $20 sat finder and installed it myself successfully. There was a weeks worth of hassle, but it was worth it. I should've done a little more research, though...
2. Wow. All these responses and not one of you seems to want to contradict what the second person said. Part of the problem in this world today is the staggering amount of mis-information that seems to be ingrained in the public, apparently from all over the world. The United States of America is a Constitutional Republic not a Democratic Republic. The founding fathers like Jefferson and his pals warned strongly of becoming a Democracy. Democracy, they warned us, would fail quickly because it's essentially Mob Rule and mobs are too easily manipulated. The current political climate here is edging ever closer to Democracy and ever further away from the Constitution that is the Law of the Land, which explains why we're teetering on the edge of a cliff, at the bottom of which lies total socialism/ communism /dictatorship /revolution. Just what the European immigrants were fleeing 250 years ago more or less when they settled here in the first place.
3. Ah. That, then, is the source of my frustration... How do I go about installing Joomla myself? Pretend I'm a total novice here... Edit: Never mind. I installed 1.5.3 or whatever is the latest and greatest and I still couldn't add new users just like before. So I've concluded that it must be an Xisto problem. I've asked support to wipe the slate clean and re-format my space entirely. Hopefully this will be the solution to all these wasted hours of frustration. I have learned a lot through it all, though, so it wasn't all for not. I am at the end of my patience rope, though. Thanks for the responses, especially rvalkass. I appreciate it. R.
4. So I wiped the whole slate clean and noticed they've got 1.5.2 now, so I installed it. When I went to add another admin under the user manager menu, it did nothing when I clicked on "NEW" in the upper right. This link is broken or something else is wrong here. I need to be able to add other admins to get this thing off and running... Someone help me please... Admin???Edit: I've come to the conclusion that the software that's on the server is bad. Could you, Shree, or someone over at Xisto please download a new copy of 1.5.2 to replace the one that's there right now? I've installed what's on there now twice with identical results, so I don't think it's a bad install, the original is bad. Thanks. Please respond when you've done it.
5. Well, that didn't work either... Surely I'm not the only person who's downloaded a free Joomlashack template, modified the header to display the name of my website, replaced that file, zipped it all up again and tried to upload it to the server here... What am I doing wrong????Edit to add: Am I playing around on two different hard drives in the server when I'm in file manager on one screen and in the Joomla Admin web site on the internet on the other screen? If so, and I think I am, how long does it usually take for file changes in file manager or from my FTP client to update to the drive that I'm looking at in the Admin screen? Hours? Minutes? Seconds? I'm not seeing any kind of real response time. What I've ended up doing is uploading a new file, not a .zip package, but the uncompressed files to the templates folder in the public_html folder. That worked, but the new files are not showing up in the Admin site yet... Perhaps they will by tomorrow...
6. Have a look around http://ww1.ftatalk.com/ and find out about Kiwi-land. I have no knowledge of that area of the world regarding satellites or anything else for that matter, except hobbits apparently like the area...

Someone asked me what I spent a while back and I don't think I answered. In total, I spent around $850 USD on everything. I could've gone higher, and if I went out to do it today, I would. Here's what I'd buy today, and the prices as listed currently on http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/: Wave Frontier Toroidal T90 Satellite - $269 SonicView 360 Dual Tuner HD PVR - $589 SonicView A1 One Piece 8PSK Module - $199 shipping: $85 Total: $1142 Now realize these prices are higher due to the weakening of the dollar since I originally purchased the motorized antenna and the Viewsat 7000PVR back when I originally started this thread. The antenna packs in ten or twelve LNBs so it's stationary, but capable of receiving signals off of many satellites at once. Nice to not have to worry about the motor. Also, it's 90cm which makes it nearly impossible to be affected by the weather. The SonicView was my choice because it has dual tuners which I really like. It's nice to be able to watch one thing while you're recording another. Also, this unit is capable of storing said movies or programming on a hard drive, which would be extra. I don't know how large a drive you can get. My close second choice is the Captiveworks 3000HD which is basically a desktop computer with Linux installed at the factory. It's the same price, so, on another day, I'd probably go with that one. The slight advantage with the SonicView is that it's got quicker support for the Electronic Countermeasures (ECMs) the DN likes to send to you in their signal stream. Takes programmers some time to build a file that'll fix everything again. It also has a 4 Ghz AMD processor but I do believe you still have to buy an add-on 8psk module to make it totally HD compliant, I could be wrong about that though... The 8PSK module is necessary for converting the signal to true 720p HD for SonicView and ViewSat receivers (along with all the others with the possible exception of the Captiveworks 3000HD as described above). There may be better prices on the internet, but you've really got to research them to ensure they're legit. This is a grey market. Sometimes people buy this stuff to tie in to Free-To-Air programming, most of the time people buy this stuff to tie in to pay programming like DishNetwork and their brothers up in Canada. So with that criminal element comes some risk, easily countered with a little research starting with going to ftatalk.com and joining their forum and educating yourself. None of this is rocket science, it just takes some time and there is a learning curve, just like with anything else. Upfront costs are not that bad, if you ask me, considering when you gain.
7. Well, I don't know what an "uninstall.png" file is or how to build one, and since admin never came on to offer their suggestions, I guess I'll just have to replace the file on my computer, re-zip it, and upload the modified package with the new file intact. What a waste of effort for one little file...
8. The file is part of a Joomla template I uploaded. Apparently I don't have permission. Don't know how that's possible. I can't delete it or replace it via ftp transfer utility, Transit, or on the file manager. I'll give that other file manager a try. I don't know how it could be "in use"...
9. Chillary has her own image to fight. The Americans know the Clintons all too well. Their memories are short, but not that short. She hasn't been as successful at re-building her image in the public eye as she'd like.Ron Paul is the only candidate who's willing to discuss the real issues and offer real solutions. The Main Stream Media (MSM) is controlled by foreign banking cartel interests (See their board of directors for a list) who can't let someone like him win an election in the U.S. Dr. Paul wants to abandon the fiat money the Federal Reserve prints from thin air and revert to the gold and silver standard that we had up to 1913. You know, the one that actually worked... Just after it was replaced the country and much of the world experienced a massive depression. Nothing like the one that's about to hit us, but very nasty none the less. Dr. Paul's new book, "Revolution: A Manifesto" is number one NY Times best sellers non-fiction right now which is garnering him new media attention. Don't listen to Mike. He shouldn't be commenting on political stuff since he's so dis-interested. The National Republican Convention isn't until September (labor day weekend?) in St. Paul, MN. (A good omen, we hope) The Washington State convention is at the end of May and I'm a Delegate elected to represent my county. We'll be there in force, overwhelming the Neo-Cons. Should be a good time. Remember, it ain't over till the Fat Lady sings...
10. I can't delete a little file using file manager in Cpanel. I'm trying to delete a .png image, actually, I'm trying to replace it. The response comes back as a success, but when I reload my site it's still there. Then I go back to the file manager and go up a level, then back and WOOP! There it is! I'm beyond frustrated here. What is going on?
11. You can even open Cpanel > file manager > click on "upload" and knock yourself out. Doesn't work for me, but it should...
12. Well, just to clarify my stance, if you're interested: I'm sure you can see in my signature who my candidate is for President. He's a OBGYN medical doctor and has delivered over 4000 babies. I'm not personally a big fan of babies and I've avoided them my whole life and will continue to for the rest of my life. Dr. Paul obviously believes abortion is murder, but I'm sure he'd prefer it to save the mother's life. Otherwise, adopt it out. However, he states unequivocally: It's not the business of the Federal Government to weigh in on the issue! It's for the states to decide. I couldn't agree more. That's why Roe vs Wade MUST be overturned. If your state declares it illegal, no worries, there's always Nevada!
13. I don't think any such law would be retro-active. So the abortions would go underground, which is also unacceptable, of course. But a million teens wouldn't immediately end up on death row. Don't know who you think you're fooling with your sensationalist nonsense there, but we'll just clear up that little detail right now.I'm just wondering: Are you not aware if a pregnant woman is murdered, the crime is "double homicide"? That means the penalty is up to two life sentences or execution. That's the law everywhere in the States I'm aware of. Why is that considered murder, but abortion is not? Why the conflicting laws?
14. We live in disturbing times when a teacher is accused of "Wizardry"! Even more disturbing is that someone above him took it seriously. It's sad to watch this civilization falling apart, one idiotic story like this at a time...
15. Oh, I know God. You might consider getting familiar with the concept of satire. That quote was taken, totally stolen, from an old Monty Python movie called "The Meaning of Life" and the song, "Every Sperm is Sacred." In which they sing, "...if a sperm is wasted, God gets quite irate..." I wish I didn't have to explain satire to people... Focus on the topic and I suppose we could avoid discussions like this in the future...
16. Ok. Here's the skinny: While she was 16, a man's daughter was getting into all kinds of trouble such as truancy and wound up in Juvenile Court where a judge ordered the father to ensure she passed the General Equivilancy Diploma that is a substitute for a High School diploma in the States. Well, here's a little snippit: So, go read the whole thing HERE. Was the sentence just? Personally, I think not. The daughter was in the custody of her mother at the time of her delinquency, first of all. Second, it appears the judge handed down his court order after she turned 18, which makes her an adult. I think that judge has a God-complex and God gets quite irate when his orders aren't obeyed, even when they are totally irrational. What say you?
17. Thanks! I feel a whole lot better about the whole thing now. Except for one nagging thing... Just a few years ago, oil in USD was under $60/ barrel. When the warhawks decided Saddam needed to be taken out using an entire military campaign, followed by a occupation using our troops as some kind of police, the price was around $42/barrel. (Correction: It was at this level with the youngest stupidest Bush was elected the first time to sit in the Oval Office and Take Over the World ala "Pinky and the Brain") It's been a rather sudden, traumatic raise for us here in the states, so it's that trauma that's getting to us. Apparently our brothers up in the Great White North are experiencing the same unsettling price hikes, and it's really cramping their styles too. The problem, for you who live in Kiwiland and the EU, our wages have not gone up to match the run-away inflation that's sucking the purchasing power right out of the non-backed Federal Reserve Notes that pass as "money" here. Of course, paper is not money, but try explaining that to most people and you'll get that "deer-in-the-headlights look". We just got through watching part one of an amazingly well-done documentary by the Hollywood heavyweight director, Aaron Russo, called "From Freedom to Fascism" that exposes many of the myths and lies regarding the Federal Reserve Banking Cartel and the Income Tax lie that's been perpetrated on the American People for the past 95 years. It's a real eye-opener. Check it out if you can. JLH: Would you mind re-doing that interesting chart with the price of Diesel #1 at the various locations too? I'm interested to see what we're paying for that in comparison. Also, if you could add a couple Mexican locations in to the mix that would be swell...
18. I don't think I'd ever give my child a cell phone. For a few reasons: First, I wonder if they'd respect the fact that they're really not free. If they had to pay for the phone and service out of pocket, then how could I argue with that? It just means they're accepting responsibility for having a gadget that's not necessary. Second, I'd consider it as a gift, or, more likely, as a reward for a scholastic accomplishment or something along those lines, but only with the understanding they'd have to pick up the service plan when what I paid for ran out. If I had a plan, I'd even consider letting them on as a family member if they made up their end of that added cost. Even if they were paying for it out of their own pocket, I'd demand a couple things: First, I'd make it mandatory they buy service from the same company I was using so that p2p calls were free. Second, I'd insist they research the hidden dangers of the microwave radiation emitted from the phone and encourage them to use a roof mounted antenna as much as possible when using the phone.
19. I suppose I came off as a tad angry in that post you quoted Bluebear, and I'm quite certain that Buffy's pointing to that post when he talks of pointing fingers. I was still annoyed with Velma for saying, on the thread she closed, that no one was calling this free hosting. Heck, the title of my browser tab open to this page is "Free Web Hosting, ..." . But I couldn't respond to her on that thread because she, apparently, wanted to end that discussion. It doesn't stop, just so you know Velma, it just spills over into other threads -like this one. Discussion is healthy. It lets everyone vent and talk it out. You shouldn't discourage it. So, sorry for being so harsh. This whole ordeal has been pretty traumatic for everyone, not the least of which are the Xisto staff working tirelessly to get everything back to where it belongs.
20. That's right. But Shree's going to need to catch up on about a weeks worth of sleep before you would want to ask him for a refund. I'm thinking a 5 credit refund (bonus) per hosted member would be about right. Anyway, let him catch up on some sleep then I think he'll do the right thing to make it square for everyone. It's little comfort for those who lost ad revenue, but it's still the appropriate response.
21. I used to work in a Central Office that had a lot of XO links and I concur that they are top notch, absolutely rock solid and I'd be comfortable housing my own network server in any of their facilities. I'm glad you've landed there, Shree, and I sorry it took so long for your partner to make the move. I guess in a perfect world we would've hardly noticed, but the world is far from perfect. Keep up the good work.
22. I've seen some of your fellow Countrymen on the Trap. I imagine it's possible you're blocked somehow from obtaining free hosting, but I don't know how if you're able to post in the forum you'd be blocked...
23. Severely punished? That seems a tad over the top... I'd ask you to consider inserting more accurate data. The propaganda machine in the Department Of Defense (Offense) wants Americans to think the occupations (Only Congress can declare a war. Every conflict since WWII was a illegal unauthorized conflict -not that that makes the casualties any less real but terminology is important.) aren't really killing that many troops, so they only count the ones who actually die in theater. If they're one minute out of the airspace of Iraq or Afghanistan and die, they're not counted. The actual number of Coalition forces dead due to these conflicts is many time higher than the DOD is telling the Main Stream Media to report. I've seen reports of permanently disabled combat veterans (U.S.) numbering higher than 250,000. And what about the Iraqis? Over 1.25M dead and counting. Then there's always the deadly Depleted Uranium that's being sprayed everywhere that'll take billions of years to break down no one even bothers to mention. That fact makes it a nuclear war. And don't bother taking the intellectually dishonest route accusing me of not knowing what I'm talking about. I'm a vet too. I joined the armed forces of the United States of America in June of 1987. When this was all being staged and the board was being set up. USS Cole was in the news at that time. I was aboard one of the ships that escorted her back to the states. Otherwise, I'm glad you decided to give a speech on this topic that's so personal to you and I hope that in doing so you find some healing and therapy. I hope you don't dismiss, out of hand, that there are evil people in the world and some of them are wearing U.S. Army (and all the others) uniforms killing innocent people in foreign lands. Of this, there can be no dispute. Let's just hope that they remain the minority and pay for their crimes.
24. See Velma? Don't tell me people don't think of this as "free"! There's nothing free about this hosting service! You all are providing a service to the Xisto corporation by making substantive posts and adding to the intellectual depth of the overall collective internet, which they, in return, get real money from via search engines and such to pay for the operation and ownership of computer hardware and salaries to support staff. In return you're allowed a small amount of time to host your site. It's not FREE!!! The sooner you'll all see it for what it is, the sooner you'll have the power to demand some compensation for down time.
25. Alex, brother, I feel for ya. I've been there and it's not an easy thing to face in one's self. I mean, to be attacked like this is to be attacked at the heart or so it'd seem. Let's look at the situation rationally, though, just for a moment. I've seen your posts and normally agree with you pretty much all the time. But that's because we're both "mac addicts" and we know the usual petty and unfounded attacks on our chosen platform. Others may not see it that way, though. There's a fine line between self-confidence and arrogance. The biggest thing that makes a world of difference and allows you the lea-way to come off a bit leaning on the arrogant side of things is if, in what you say and do, you some how manage to find a non-threatening way of saying or doing it. That way everyone feels better about the whole thing when you leave them. In other words, you can either make someone feel better about themselves when you interact with them, or you could generate feelings of animosity, anger, or fear against you. It's not an easy thing to do, being political in your interactions with people, but it should be at the forefront of your mind before you even open your mouth every time you interact with someone who will remember you. Office politics is full of land-mines and you'll learn to avoid them. I personally celebrated the day I was laid off from Global Crossing and no longer had to work in that environment. Not that I didn't get along with my co-workers, but I no longer had the added stress of pretending I liked them when in reality, I didn't. It's an artificial world created for you to "fit" into during the day, but you put on your own hat at the end of the day and you can be yourself then. I hope you realize that the reason this "personality deficiency" was brought to your attention in the first place is someone is hoping you'll have the courage to modify your mannerisms at work. That means, they see more to like in you than not. That's a good thing. It means you've got a chance to show you don't come into work every day wondering just how much you can humiliate your most senior co-worker in front of a crowd making him cry. Chipper up little camper! Don't give up now. Thank whoever told you the good news and tell your peers you'd appreciate them coming to you directly next time if they think you're being a jackass. Good luck!
