  1. I agree with SportsLegends, it was a huge waste of money to bring Beckham here. It'd be more likely for America to adopt the metric system than to suddenly start liking a sport that is just not part of the culture here. I personally enjoy soccer more than baseball for instance, and think it is much more fast paced and exciting. But our parents and grandparents here in America have grownup with baseball, football (US version),etc...and try to pass that tradition down to thier kids. Bringing one superstar from the UK here isn't going to change that.
  2. They probably did this out of respect for his family. In retrospect, the fact that Ford was incredibly clumsy wasn't exactly the most important aspect of his Presidency... it was the funniest aspect though...
  3. While I agree that his execution will likely cause a spike in short term violence, there is also a chance that it may help lead to long-term peace in Iraq. There are still some insurgents (former Baath Party members) who dream of restoring the old dictatorship. Hopefully Saddam's death will convince them to finally give up, lay down thier weapons and stop killing their innocent fellow Iraqis.
  4. Munir Haddad, the Iraqi judge who will be attending Saddam's execution, and who also presided over the court that rejected the former dictator's appeal to stay his execution, said that Saddam would be executed no later than Saturday. Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has signed off on Hussein's death sentence, confirmed an unnamed Iraqi official.Saddam Hussein has not yet been handed over from American custody to Iraqi security forces in preparation for his execution. It was ruled that he would be killed by hanging, but no word has been given yet, as to whether or not any members of the media would be allowed in to witness the execution.Saddam was found guilty, by an Iraqi High Tribunal, of the killing of 148 people in the Shiite town of Dujail in 1982.It is feared by many that Hussein's death will spark even more violence by Sunni insurgent groups, who might try and exact revenge for his death.
  5. Anything that requires great physical skill, endurance, and effort should be considered a sport. NASCAR fits all three of those criteria in my opinion. I can't imagine having to drive and manuever for HOURS under that kind of stress. Anyway, what do you guys think of the "sports" that don't involve direct competition, but are scored subjectively by a panel of judges. I'm talking about things like the high dive and ice skating. Those things do require physical skill, but I think direct competition is a big part of what makes something a sport. I'm a little wary of things that have to be decided by a panel of people who could potentially have biases and/or be bribed to give a certain score.
  6. Ford also made the controversial decision to pardon Nixon of any crimes he may have committed while in office. This probably cost him the presidency in the '76 election against Carter, but today most people agree that it was the right decision because it helped heal a badly divided nation. Ford was also famous for being nonpartison... the kind of thing we need more of in US politics today.
  7. Gamecube always gets trashed for having no good games, but I think there are tons of great ones. Super Smash Bros is my favorite (can't wait until the next version comes out for the Wii ), but Resident Evil 4 was awesome as well (I admit this was probably the only amazing 3rd party title that the Cube had). Metriod Prime 1&2 and Pikmin were good as well.
  8. This is an amazingly addicting game and version 2.0 just makes it even better. If you search youtube, you can find insane videos of linerider courses people made. I swear, some of these look like they took days to draw. And to think, I can barely get my guy to go in a loop...
  9. No, genocide is mass murder with the specific intent of wiping out a certain race or religion. As mentioned, the most famous examples are the Holocaust, the Rwanda conflict, and Saddam using chemical WMDs on the Kurds. But there is also what many people consider to be a genocide occuring right now in Darfur. As many as 400,000 people have been killed there since 2003.
  10. What do you guys think the pairing of nanotechnology with artificial intelligence? In a book by Micheal Crichton (Prey), the company develops intelligent floating nanites for the military to use as surveillance. Well, this being a thriller, the nanites obviously go berserk and start attacking/dissolving people and replicating. Anyway, I was just thinking that scientists should be careful when dealing with things that manipulate/destroy things on the molecular level.
  11. I'm not even considering a PS3 right now. It's way too expensive and there's only 1 decent launch game out for it anyway(Resistance). So I'm torn between getting an XBox360 or a Wii. The Wii seems like it offers a fun and really different experience but I'm afraid the novelty of the wiimote will wear off...Sooooo Hey! I guess I solved my dilemma. I'm getting a 360.
  12. If my name isn't a big enough clue, my favorite football team is the Oakland Raiders... Seriously though, the Chargers, in this biased San Diegan's opinion, are the best and most balanced team in the NFL today. They have the best running back of ALL TIME in Ladainian Tomlinson, a lights out defense with Shawne Merriman (16 sacks this season, even though he's missed 4 games). And even though our QB Philip Rivers has had a couple lousy games the past few weeks, he's always come through when it counts (not to mention the fact that he was selected for the pro-bowl). The Chargers are, without a doubt, going to win the Superbowl this year.
  13. I would agree with most people here that medicine/electricty are the greatest human inventions. But I also think that the internet deserves mention as the invention with the most potential to change humanity. It allows people from all over the world to connect and share ideas in ways that would have been difficult if not impossible 10-15 years ago. I think that with the emergence of "Web 2.0" it's obvious that the internet (or the way we use it, at least) is evolving and could end up serving as humanity's "collective consciousness".... or at least remain a convient way to look at porn.
  14. If all of the world's oil completely disappeared then our best fuel alternative would probably be ethanol made from corn. It's only about 70% to 85% as efficient as gasoline but it is obviously renewable and better for the environment too. The problem would come from growing enough corn though. For example, if every kernel of corn grown in the US was converted to ethanol, it would only account for around 12% of our energy needs. Cellulosic ethanol, which is being developed now, could solve this problem as well because it is made from waste vegatation like cornstalks and switchgrass.
