I dunno, I've tried MacOS, Linux, Windows, and a whole bunch of others. I dislike all of them, and so am currently working on my own (I don't think it will ever be nearly as good as the others, but at least it is somewhat productive). Out of all of them, I still prefer windows. And actually, Vista can run in essentially a windows XP environment with 512MB RAM. It's the Aero interface that is hardware intensive. And almost any new computer can handle that.~Viz

Automatic, no. However, when bad things happen, a bug report tool similar to what XP has when there is a program crash or you end a nonresponsive program appears. And it has a feedback and bug report tool that you have to manually open, but it easy to use.~Viz

I finally grabbed and installed Vista Beta 2 and have been using it for about a week to gather enough information to make a decision. Here are my conclusions:Aero: Wow and wow again. Amazing. Simply amazing. Now, why can't Microsoft make an aero plugin or upgrade for XP? I love it, enough said.Lack of Toolbars: Intersting approach. Confusing at first, but you get the hang of it.Control Panel: Yay, so many more tools, easy access to ones that have been around for a while, good progress.File system: Not too much improvement, search speed is a little better, but not too much.Start Menu: Her I have some issues, no windows media player, all programs is knida odd, and shutdown is very weird. Restart or sleep is the defautl I think, and it only has a picture for that, and shutdown on the login menu, I like XP's shutdown method better.Software: Not much change so far, most of the XP Programs have worked with exception of one important one to be talked about under drivers.OpenGL: Origianlly, Vista was not supposed to have OpenGL support. I don't know what happened, but haven't had a chance to check, should be installing Jedi Knight soon and letting you know.Drivers: Some progress with native drivers, but some lack of progress. Still no native support for touchpad drivers except as PS/2 Mice. I tried to use my Sony XP Reocvery Disk to install the mouse driver, but the recovery application won't load. Some issue with Sony drivers. I blame ony more than windows since Sony is being a jerk about making a big deal of computer Vista readiness and not offering or mentioning Vista drivers to come. But loss of mouse functionailty is a big thing. Seems to support some XP drivers though, so it's not too bad.Overall impression: Could shape up to be a fine OS, need to check a couple things, and need better driver support from third party companies. Other than that, I like it and will almost definitely upgrade or dual boot.As for the person who claims it is a memory hog, I have 2 Gigs, run the resource monitor all the time, and notice no issues except for occasionally during the first minute of bootup. Might be his sytem.~Viz

Vujsa is 100% correct, although he did not get at the main reason for the difference. The reason why both exist comes down to the DOM and XML requirements. To properly parse and navigate an XML document for more than simple stylistic ends, which is one of the plusses of XML, sometimes information about the items must be stored in the element itself, hence the purpose of the id and class attributes. The id attribute, as vujsa explained, identifies one specific entity. This is useful because instead of having to define a person as such in XML: <person> <name> vizskywalker </name> <personaldata> data </personaldata></person>You can create it like so:<person id="vizskywalker"> <personaldata> data </personaldata></person>In this oversimplified example, it doesn't seem to make much difference, but when writing scripts such as javascripts to handle the XML document, being able to easily find and identify one entity without having to go through the whole tree it is connected to can be very important. Other than stylistic purposes, the class attribute also has other uses in XML used for non-XHTML type XML documents:<animal class="person" id="vizskywalker"> <communication> english </communication></animal><animal class="person" id="vujsa"> <communication> english </communication></animal><animal class="dog"> <communication> bark </communication></animal>As you can see, one type of element, the animal element, has many subgroups. Rather than define a new element to determine the type of animal, you can use the class attribute. You can even mix and match id and class attributes to determine the type of animal and which specific animal of that type. ~Viz

If javascript isn't beyond you, look at Nift Corners. It is a method of using pure CSS and Javascript to create rounded corners without images which decreases download time. Most curved corner images are at least a couple kilobytes. So if on your website you have 14 boxes with rounded corners, even if each corner image is only 1 kilobyte, you've just increased a visitor with a 56K modem, which most people on the internet still have, by a full second. If you use a dull top, bottom or side image to cover two corners at once, then the smallest size wil probably be around 3 kilobytes, so although you have half as many images, you wind up with a 1.5 second page load increase. With javascript and css and caching, you can have a less than one second increase one time only. ~Viz

Good to know. I've stopped using the <font> tag and as far as I can tell deprecated tags since I've been comfining all my html coding to XHTML 1.0 Strict, and I'm know making the switch to XHTML 1.1. So I've been using CSS. I was just worried that CSS would act the same way and cause me problems. Spekaing of CSS, what's the status update on CSS 3. I know that 2.1 is the current working draft, but I thought I saw a CSS 3 module made working draft. Anyone know where I can find the roadmap for CSS 3 as all I can find is the roadmap for 2.1. ~Viz

I haven't tried with 5.9, though I've been tempted, because the camera does work with Yahoo! messenger, so it doesn't seem all that worth it. As far as the message, it's in the camera settings utility, so AIM itself never sees, or notices the message. However, the settings utility has detected a compatible version of Yahoo! and Windows Live Messenger, and it works with those programs. I've also checked the Logitech site, and they had nothing helpful on the issue. My cable was cut today, so I can only get on for snippets at hotspots, but as soon as it's fixed, if no one offers a better idea or solution, I'll try it with AIM 5.9 and report back.~Viz

I just bought a Logitech QuickCam Fusion for my laptop, even though it's technically a desktop webcam. It's way of sitting on top of LCD screens works lovely for laptops as well. It claims to be compatible with AIM, and I have the latest version of AIM Triton. However, in the camera settings, it says I do not have a capable version of AIM. Now on the AIM website I found this information on using webcams:[quote name='http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/: Why am I having problems getting Video IM to work on my computer? A: To use Video IM users may need an updated component of the Windows XP Operating System. Here's how to upgrade for use with Video IM: Here's how to upgrade for use with Video IM: 1. First, completely sign out of AIM and any other programs running on your computer. 2. Click here to download the file for use together with Video IM. 3. When the download is complete, click Open or Run the program from its current location. 4. Follow the instructions on screen to install. 5. When installation is complete the program will be loaded but invisible and running in the background. 6. Restart your computer and launch AIM to enjoy Video IM. (Remember, those you want to Video IM with may need to follow this process as well.) I managed to get the update by manually going to the ftp site, since I was only taken to the AIM main page when clicking on the link. The logitech software still claims that I do not have a proper version of AIM. If you read further on the AIM help page, it says to properly configure your router and firewall. My router is one of the listed routers that works with default settings, and as far as I can tell, short of manually opening the entire series of ports, my firewall is configured properly. It is configured to allow AIM full access to any and all ports, as well as all AIM services. The other computer I am trying to Video IM is on the same local network I am with the same firewall configurations and also has the update installed. When trying to Video IM, occasionally I get a black IM window with a small screen showing what my webcam (the Logitech QuickCam Fusion) sees. The other computer also has a black IM window with a preview of what its webcam sees. After a couple of seconds, the Video IM disconnects. I am completely baffled as to why this occurs or how to configure AIM and/or Windows XP SP2 and/or the Logitech QuickCam Fusion so that I can use AIM for Video IM. Any suggestions or explanations would be most welcome. ~Viz

Hex colors are actually quite simple. The first two hex digits (hexits) represent how much red is in an image. The second two hexits represent the amount of green, and the third two hexits represent the amount of blue. Green and blue combine to form cyan, red and green combine to form yellow, and blue and red combine to form magenta. Then you can mix colors the same way you would mix two paints. Using the <font> tag is all well and good, but it is preferable to use CSS either in external stylesheets or internal stylesheets with the <style> tag. For example of an internal stylesheet: <style type="text/css"> p.RedLarge { color: #ff0000; font-size: 20pt; }</style>The color attribute sets the color in the same manner as the <font color=""> tag and the font-size attribute changes the size in the same manner as the <font size=""> tag. It is a good idea to use pt for specifying font size as that is the same method used in most applications such as word, so it provides consistent translation. By specifying attributes for p.RedLarge, I have declared a class only for the <p> tag that can accessed easily and repeatedly throughout the document via <p class="RedLarge">. ~Viz

If the only thing cracked was plastice, chances are it's safe, at least until the plastic snaps off in that area to expose what's underneath to dirt or the plastic snaps off, hits something else and damages it. My suggestion, if you just got it, and can wait to ship it back if you got it online, return it to the retailer you got it from for a new one. All harddrives come with limited warranties to cover that, and all retailers I know of have return policies that cover that kind of issue.~Viz

I'm planning on dual booting with it. Vista is in its second Beta which says 2 things to me:1) Most (if not all) of the bugs that can kill hardware are gone.Explanation: Think about it, who did Beta 1 go to, the techies. Unless these people are required by work, they are capable enough to easily switch to Linux. Microsoft cannot afford to tick these people off by killing hardware, so most of those bugs would have to be handled during Alpha phase. In addition, these people probably did a lot more with Vista than most people, so any bugs left to kill hardware were probably found in Beta 1, and they would be rmeoved before Beta 2.2) It is probably safe to use Vista in addition to XP so long as you make frequent backups of the Vista Partition and you don't share partitions between the two.Explanation: This is the second Beta, which means Microsoft is sure there are still some bugs out, so they don't want to expose themselves to lawsuits by going Gold, but otherwise it is safe for release to the public. This Beta is to wet the public's appetite. They want us to try Vista, love it, and buy it. If it messes up our system, that's not going to happen. So this is the Google tactic of "leave it in Beta forever to avoid lawsuits"As such, I plan to devote a 20-40GB partition to Vista, while maintaining my 100GB XP Partition. If I find Vista Beta 2 to be stable, and I like the OS, I will eventually switch to the other way around, but if not, I simply wipe Vista and move on. Or, I could wait for Vista to go Gold and then buy it so I'm not running a Beta as my main OS.~Viz

New Firefox Update 1.5.0.4

Okay, I am halfway to being able to add the My Videos Folder (the only of the special My <Files> folder I really use) to the start panel. For those of you who don't know what I am talking about, make sure you have the new XP start menu not classic, then open your start menu. The right side is the start panel, and it should have links to things like My Documents, My Music, My Computer, etc. The only one you can't add to it (you add features to it from the properties page) is the My Videos File. No, my method: 1) Knowing Windows as well as I do, first thing after experimenting with properties and doing a web search is hit the registry, where I find the following key, and it is the only key relating to the start panel or involving both the start menu and the My <Type> Folders: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\ _ CurrentVersion\Explorer\StartMenu\StartPanel\MyPics]There was a similar MyDocs key and MyMusic key so I was sure I had hit the jackpot. So, I exported the key and all subkeys and changed all references to "MyPics" to "MyVids" and added the new key, no change to the start panel or the properties page. 2) So, I look at the subkeys and the data for the keys, and I find these pices of data under the main key: "Text"="@shell32.dll,-30486""Bitmap"="%SystemRoot%\\System32\\shell32.dll,236"So, I open up a dll viewer (IconView version 3.5, freeware) and look at icon 236 and see it is the icon for the My Pictures folder, so I change the number to 238 (the number for the My Videos icon). I notice from similar keys such as the MyMusic key that the last number in the text reference matched the last number in the icon reference, so i try changing the text reference to -30488, which turns out to not exist (or simply not work, I'm not sure). 3) So I change the text from pointing at a shell32.dll reference to simply "My Videos" and low and behold, on the properties page appears a reference to the My Videos file and adding it to the start panel. So I check the radio button that says add to panel as link, nothing happens. So I keep looking at the keys, and I see one called policy with a sub key like such: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ _ Explorer\StartMenu\StartPanel\MyVids\Policy\NoSMMyPictures]I do a little online research and find out this is a reference to a windows policy, but I can't find a similar poicy for the My Videos folder, so I became stumped. Now the question(s): 1) Does anyone know of an existing windows policy for the My Videos folder? 2) Does anyone know how to copy and edit an existing policy? 3) Does anyone know how to create a new policy regarding something like this from scratch? ~Viz P.S. Just for your reference, a copy of the original MyPics key and sub keys and my new MyVids key and subkeys. To answer OpaQue's question, since no one else seems likely to, here is what each preference does:network.http.max-connections: This determines the maximum number of connections firefox will make to the outside world. So if you set it to one, you should only really be able to load one page at a timenetwork.http.max-connections-per-server: This determines how many connections firefox will make to each server. In some cases creating more connections to one server means pages can be loaded in pieces, or two pages in a framed page can be loaded at once.network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server: This determines how many connections to each server can be left open once a job is finished, so for example a java applet connecting to the server and maintaining the connection.network.http.pipelining: Even though we have told firefox it may make more than one connection to each server, it will only actively use one connection at a time, although others may be open, and it may switch back and forth between connections to give an appearance of using them all. Pipelining allows firefox to use all the connections at once.network.http.pipelining.maxrequests: This tells firefox the maximum number of requests it can actively use at once when pipelinig.network.http.proxy.pipelining: This tells firefox it may pipeline through a proxy. Otherwise, if a proxy is set up it will not pipeline. And finally, the new one added in a later post:browser.cache.memory.capactiy: This sets a maximum on the amount of memory that Firefox may have allocated to it.~Viz

Actually, numerous bug notices have been sent, and this issue started at least back with 1.5.0.2 (according to some of the other sites asking about the problem). And this is a major issue in my opinion, this indicates that firefox's level of commitment is decreasing. If you remember back to the days of IE originally, Microsoft was very good about trying to stay on top of bugs. It took longer because of technological capabilities, and microsoft has never had the best programmers. But this new firefox problem seems to be the beginnin of decay, especially since Mozilla doesn't have the same problem and Firefox is based off of Mozilla.~Viz

Okay, so maybe triumphs isn't the proper verb. But there is a problem with Firefox's handling of javascript not found in IE6. Normally I hate IE's representation of javascript (such as it's failure to distinguish object types) but here the point goes to IE6. The basic rundown: When events occur on text boxes and some other input types, or certain functions like passing the focus occur on these DOM Elements, certain mishaps can occur. For example, when handling a keypress event from a textbox and calling an alert, an exception is thrown. The message: Error: [Exception... "'Permission denied to set property XULElement.selectedIndex' when calling method: [nsIAutoCompletePopup::selectedIndex]" nsresult: "0x8057001e (NS_ERROR_XPC_JS_THREW_STRING)" location: "JS frame :: http://localhost/developement/assume/shout...pts/addshout.js :: anonymous :: line 37" data: no] The line in question is the line containing the alert. This is technically only a warning, but as this can stack up in the javascript console, it can cause a Firefox slowdown. Analysis: The key piece of the exception is "nsIAutoCompletePopup::selectedIndex". For some reason, when autocomplete is not turned off on a textbox, the alert for some unknown reason attempts to access it and fails. The workaround is to use a tag like this: <input type="text" autocomplete="off"> There are two problems with this. The first is that autocomplete is not a valid XHTML property, so it will invalidate your XHTML. The second is that like it seems, this turns off autocomplete, which you might want to leave on. The final word: IE6 does not have this problem, and theoretically neither should Firefox as it is not improper code in any way shape or form. I do not remember this in earlier versions of firefox, so hopefully it will be resolved in the next firefox, as it seems to be a common solution. I am still unsure of what exactly NS_ERROR_JS_THREW_STRING really means, but I will post if I found out. The recommendation: If you see this error in the javascript console, post here describing what caused the exception, and simply try to avoid those kinds of programming. If you must use that specific piece of programming, simply ignore the exception as it is a warning only and doesn't accurately represent a problem. ~Viz

The Importance Of Limiting Bandwidth ... a theory and a question.
vizskywalker replied to iGuest's topic in Computer Networks
But we can't say one megabit is 8 times one megabyte, we never have been. We can say that a mebibit is 8 times one megabyte. Except even then it doesn't really mean much. It's best to not confuse network speeds with storage and to use the aproximation that 8 megabits/s is 1 megabyte/s since that works for most daily applications.~Viz -
The Importance Of Limiting Bandwidth ... a theory and a question.
vizskywalker replied to iGuest's topic in Computer Networks
I would like to respond to pyost's confusion on the whole 1Mb = 0.976Mb:(Using b for bit and B for byte)1Mb = 1000000b1000000b = 125000BThis is where you made your mistake125000B is not 125KB, since you must divide the number of bytes by 1024 not 1000, which yields125000B = 122.07...KBNow, 1024 KB is 1MB122.07...KB = 0.119209...MBSo that number was off, your next step seems to be a logical one, multiply by 8 to return to bitsThe problem is that the M in MB stands for 1024 and the M in Mb stands for 1000Let us now let M stand for the M in Mb and N stand for the M in MBso after multiplying by 8 we have1Mb = 0.95367...Nb1(1000)^2b = 0.95367...(1024)^2b1000000b = 1000000b1Mb = 1MbSo you see, it all comes down to forgetting to convert M standing for 1000 into M standing for 1024It's similar to in physics trying to use cubic meters in a formula that requires liters, first you must convert, and the proper method to convert is to first convert cubic meters to cubic centimeters (which are the same volume as milliliters, so we have that conversion which is 1 to 1) then to liters.~Viz -
The Importance Of Limiting Bandwidth ... a theory and a question.
vizskywalker replied to iGuest's topic in Computer Networks
Unfortunately, you made the most common mistake techies make, the base two exuberance mistake. Because computers work in bytes, and base two, many things are based on the base two system. For example, Megabytes in storage and RAM measures. In these cases, the prefix relates to the base two value closest to the SI prefix meaning, like 1024 for Kilo. However, in two common cases, storage limits by computer manufacturers and network speeds, the prefixes are directly SI prefixes. 1 Kbps (Kilobit per second) is exactly 1000 bits per second, not 1024 (even though that makes fractions of bytes, and it doesn't seem to make sense). 1 Mbps (Megabit per second) is 1000 Kbps or 1000000 bits per second. The other method of discussing network speeds is the kibibit, which is exactly like the standard Kbps but is in base two so 1 kibibit is 1024 bps. For verification see: Wikipedia for Kbps Wikipedia for Kibibits Conversion Site Other than that mistake, that is the simplified explanation of the how and why. It gets to be more detailed (for example, overselling because some sites hardly use bandwidth, so the hoster charges for more bandwidth knowing many sites will never reach the 2GB per month so they have extra they can make a buck off of) but this is a decent summary. ~Viz -
Is There A Minimum Resolution For Video Cards?
vizskywalker replied to WeaponX's topic in Hardware Workshop
In theory, there is no minimum resolution. Video modes are defined by the card manufacturer in accordance with VESA specifications (latest release VBE v. 3.0). This means a video card company could define a video mode to be 1px by 1px at monochrome. In practice, the minimum resolution for video cards is 320 x 200 x 8 bit color. This is VGA mode 0x13. To be in accordance with VESA, all video cards must support all VGA modes. For basic OS runnin environments, such as desktops and the like, modern OSes mostly have a minimum resolution of 640 x 480 x 8 bit color (which is an SVGA mode), although programs on the OS could run in lower VGA modes. And if 800x600 is large enough for you, then I don't see a reason to get a new monitor untill you can find the one that sings to you that you can afford.~Viz -
