  1. I think the invites are random. I have two Gmail accounts (one for people I know in real life and one for everyone else). My first one didn't have any invites, but my second one had four. By the way, I found http://www.gmailswap.com/ last week. There's always people giving invites away on it, so if you need an account fast, you can get an invite in like ten minutes.
  2. Ok, the same company owns Xisto, AstraHost, and Xisto - Web Hosting, correct? What are the differences between the free hosts and Xisto - Web Hosting? *is assuming that Xisto and AstraHost's only difference is that the AstraHost forums are more technical* I know Xisto - Web Hosting is on different servers (and of course, we pay instead of post), but is there anything else? I posted this question in my hosting request, but it wasn't answered there.
  3. I'm not Christian and I don't believe in the Christian Devil. I do believe in magick and psychic powers that we are born with, such as clairvoyance, and bits of power/influence that objects are imbued with. Of course, I don't believe in the stereotypical witches (who does?). And I do believe in 'dark' magic, but it's not neccessary the same as 'evil'.
  4. My family used to have a Golden Retriever that we found as a puppy (no one ever claimed him), but we had to give him to a friend when we moved into our new golf course house a year ago. And I've always wanted a cat, but my aunt is 'allergic' to cat hair. (I think she only claims to be because she doesn't want me to get a cat.)
  5. That article angers me. By saying long hair makes you stupid, it's saying that females are stupid. *insert somewhat feminist rant about equality* By the scale of 'the more hair you have, the less potential you have', those that have lost their hair to cancer are potentially the brightest among us and those who have never cut their hair (some religions) are the dumbest.Asia has too many bogeyman-type myths. I understand that it's just part of its culture, but it's so... restricting to the people who live there.
  6. I don't watch much TV anymore. Just on Saturday mornings if I wake up before noon. If you count DVDs, I watched Princess Diaries 2 with my mom last night. If not, the obligatory New Years Eve programming (which I didn't pay that much attention to for once). And before that, a Saturday morning (cartoons and The Other Limits).

    Hi

Thank you both for the welcomes. (And welcome to you too, yvu) This seems like a very friendly community. I just applied for my initial hosting package, and hopefully, I'll have it by tomorrow afternoon. Hm, it's today now, I suppose. Anyway, I'll see you both around. I think I'm going to like it here.
  8. Right now, I have a site hosted on lunarpages.com. I haven't had any problems with it and I've heard only good things about it, but it doesn't offer much by the way of FTP accounts and MySQL databases and you can't use ASP or JSP unless you pay an extra dollar or two. Before that, I was on aplus.net, which was okay (it doesn't offer much either by the way of MySQL and a few other things), but gets a lot of bad reviews. I didn't have any problems with them either, but I do not recommend using their file editors. (They turn multiple spaces into ?s, even if you use ASCII.) A few other paid hosts I've looked at are e-starr.com, hasweb.com, and netrillium.com. I just looked at the sites again and Netrillium has some very good promos going on right now. I heard about those three through recommendations, but I haven't researched them much further than that.
  9. I mostly use HTML for my sites and PHPBB for forums. I use Notepad, CrimsonEditor, and the Cpanel file editor to code and edit, SmartFTP to upload, (I don't have the links to CrimsonEditor or SmartFTP on hand, but I'm sure someone linked to them in these forums.), mostly PaintShopPro for graphics, and I have a Wacom tablet to draw things straight in.
  10. I used to be completely addicted to Runescape. (Even dreamt about it a few times!) I had to stop playing a while ago when I got too busy though. I think I might start up again soon. There's usually around three new quests a month and I heard they've come out with a Capture-The-Flag-like minigame and more terrain since I've been off.

    Hi

Hi, I'm Corla, I just joined early this morning. I'm in New Mexico, USA, 'soon' to move to New York or Pennsylvania. (Soon being sometime in the next year) Let's see... My main interests right now are reading/writing and games/puzzles. I read mostly sci-fi/fantasy and Harry Potter fanfic. I've been 'going to' start a personal site for over a year now, and that's mainly what I'm going to use my space for.
  12. I found it on http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ . I've been looking for a good place to host for a while, but I'd just been looking at complete free or paid hosting. I'd been staying away from post to host's for a while, just because I didn't know much about them, but I finally decided why not, it was only one or two dozen posts a month, and I could go paid somewhere else later on if I didn't like it. Nearly didn't join here, but it's a lot easier to post here than I thought it would be. I might stick around
  13. I listen to Rock and newer Metal, mostly. Right now, my favorite bands are Nightwish and Zeromancer. I phase in and out of listening to Radio KoL. (The local radio stations where I live tend to play older stuff more... Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it's very rare that they play a song that I've never heard before that's not decades old.) And other that that, I will listen to most other music, except oldies/classics and country.
  14. Just update my LiveJournal or site (when I get it up) everyday, I suppose. It's just a resolution for the sake of having one. Last year, I had six or so resolutions (most of which were... overblown, nearly impossible), and failed all of them... Well, I suppose I do have another resolution other than that this year, but it's not likely I'll fail and if I manage to, then my life is going to be really screwed over.
  15. First thing I look at is cost. Then, if it has all the features I need/want (PHP, MySQL, etc...). I prefer webbased e-mail and both browser and FTP upload access. No ads are a must unless it's a completely free host. It should have 99% uptime. If it has a good amount of space and bandwidth. And if I'm still considering it after weighing its features, I check the reviews at a few sites to make sure it does have good uptime and support and such. Then, I look at a few others and compare and pick one with the other few as backups.
  16. I use Yahoo with the messenger for alerts. Hotmail was my first e-mail account, but it's always given the least amount of space out of the three, and I believe, the slowest. I don't have a Gmail account and I know a lot of people love it, but I can't see how anyone could possibly need an entire gigabyte of space. An average user would have to save every single e-mail for years to get anywhere near to filling it up, which could be a good or bad thing, I suppose.
  17. I want and am going to make a game someday. *is lazy and has four programming books and several other programming languages on her to do list to read and learn, but has barely cracked yet* Ought to read them sometime soon. Anyway, it'll probably be a browser-based or MUD. I might have the beginnings of a plotline for a game worked out, but I'm not sure how well it'd work out. Probably be one of those games no one ever played.
  18. AIM with an add-on that logs, (I prefer DeadAIM) mostly because that's the messenger most people I know use. I'm trying AIMutation right now, and it's been crashing a bit, so I'm going to switch back soon. Besides that, I'm usually on Yahoo just because it has a good invisibility feature (AIM's a bit picky about that.) and so it'll give me mail alerts, as that's my main e-mail account right now. MSN's okay, I suppose. I don't know anyone on IRC, so I didn't keep it. And I've never gotten used to Trillian.
  19. I would only get a desktop if you like to mess around with the insides and customize things. Otherwise, laptop, definitely. (Try to get a 'gaming' laptop.) For all the reasons that everyone has said. Besides, personally, I think PDAs are hard to get used to. My only experience with that... interface is at the store though. And my Wacom tablet, if you count that pen. And well, I don't know much about PDAs, but don't a lot of sites show up weird/not at all?
  20. Who doesn't hate pop-ups? One of the reasons I didn't join this forum right away was all the ads. If there had been a pop up/under, I probably wouldn't have considered joining at all. But I think I'd rather have one pop-up (per visit/page) in exchange for 75% of the ads right now. (Of course, one always thinks things like that before they actually get it..) Anyway, it's a bad idea because it'd either drive away users and/or barely get noticed at all.
