  1. Service tweaks do reduce the startup time. However remember to defragment the drive where Windows is installed often (at least once a week). Also without using bootvis you can perform the exact similar tasks : 1. Start -> Run type : defrag c: -b Assuming Windows XP to be installed in drive C. Then again Start->Run type : rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks This process run's in background (no visible window), but look for the hard disk activity led .... takes some time to complete.
  2. Also you can backup all your 5 registry hives : system, software, sam, security, default. This will be helpful when a corrupted registry has prevented you from starting up or booting into Windows. ERUNT isa free software that backs up all the 5 registry hives. (It can restore backup also). Now, for a disaster recovery step, after you have backed up with ERUNT, open the folder, you'll find the 5 files : default SAM SECURITY software system copy/burn the 5 files to a CD/DVD. In case when you cannot bootup due to a corupted registry : 1. Start Windows with the Windows CD, and go to Recovery console. Assuming D to be the backup drive where the files are stored : type the following commands in recovery console : md tmpcopy c:\windows\system32\config\system c:\windows\tmp\system.bakcopy c:\windows\system32\config\software c:\windows\tmp\software.bakcopy c:\windows\system32\config\sam c:\windows\tmp\sam.bakcopy c:\windows\system32\config\security c:\windows\tmp\security.bakcopy c:\windows\system32\config\default c:\windows\tmp\default.bakdelete c:\windows\system32\config\systemdelete c:\windows\system32\config\softwaredelete c:\windows\system32\config\samdelete c:\windows\system32\config\securitydelete c:\windows\system32\config\defaultcopy d:\system c:\windows\system32\config\systemcopy d:\software c:\windows\system32\config\softwarecopy d:\config c:\windows\system32\config\samcopy d:\security c:\windows\system32\config\securitycopy d:\default c:\windows\system32\config\default Now restart normally. And delete the C:\Windows\Tem folder. You can also import a registry hive through regedit, modify the changes you made and restore them. Alternately a copy of the 5 registry hives are located in C:\Windows\Repair directory. However they are the hives when Windows is first installed on a system, so they don't contain any new software, custom settings that you have applied after installing Windows.

    Security Software?

I use NOD32 + AdwareSE + Spyware Blaster + Spybot S&D + Outpost firewall + HijackThis, and also sometimes the free Ewido scans. Seems to me the best so far. Hasn't mixed a single thing for the past 15 months.
  4. Also look in Event Log -> Application and Event Log -> System for more errors, or some more information about the errors.Launch Event Log : Start -> Run -> type eventvwr.msc
  5. Read a phone number from where ??And how is the function supposed to return the phone number to the caller ?
  6. Another method is to use killbox. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/windows/ Then just open killbox, browse and select the files you wan't to delete, and select the "delete on reboot option", and click the red X button, reboot, and the selected files will be deleted.
  7. What exact error are you receiving ?Are you getting a page not found error ?I would start by cleaning all cookies and temporary internet files. Also clear your DNS cache.Start -> Run -> type ipconfig /flushdnsAlso check your Host file that the specific site is not perhaps accidentally blocked. A HijackThis log file will quickly analyze your internet settings and your host files.
  8. Samsung has made its entry into the smartphone market by launching the SGH-i320. It is a triband GSM (900 / 1800 / 1900) Windows Mobile 5.0 powered smartphone features like : QWERTY keyboard and looks similar to the slim Motorola Q. A large 2.2 inches LCD screen with 1.3 mega-pixel resolution camera, .. wow.. along with cool features such as Bluetooth and high-quality dual speakers. Plus it allows users to send and receive e-mails instantly, when connected to a Microsoft Exchange Server 2003. The phone will surely compete with the Motorola Q having similar features but lacking Wi-Fi. http://www.samsung.com/us/ News : http://www.samsung.com/us/
  9. AMD has released details of its next-generation desktop CPU interface, namely Socket AM3, to its OEM partners. Also suprisingly AMd revealed that AM2 will be compatible with AM3 CPU packages also. Also, recent roadmaps have confirmed that AM3, AMD's future desktop CPU socket, will not be backwards compatible with AM2-package CPUs. R From the most recent AMD roadmap is also clear that AM3 "supports either DDR2 SDRAM or DDR3 SDRAM, but not on the same motherboard." This will definetly be a great news for upgraders, as there is a very clear upgrade path: CPU, motherboard, and then memory. Hey ... wait .. but then this also means that AM3 CPUs will have both DDR2 and DDR3 support!!. DDR3, like DDR2, has 240-pin, but the two formats are not pin-compatible. 10. Well I tried all of those. But the end comma seemed to be ingored no matter whatever I try !
  11. I have around 80 invites left. You can PM me if you want one. Out of topic : I see there are many who take care of protecting their e-mail's to be safe from spam. Here's a good trick : http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/404.png Hide your text or e-mail Id's : http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
  12. As mentioned, A hijack this log file would be very helpful. Also how long was it since you last formatted your PC ? Windows do have a bad habit bloating up every 5~7months :)Also how many process are running in Task Manager under normal circumstances ? Have you de-fragmented the hard drives ?
  13. Doubled which part ?? ........... well the only opinion I could add present is .. just hope that the prices would be reasonable here in India. Otherwise it would be very hard to get one !! As for which person's did them and from which country ... all the details were given in the Patent article link .. which now does not work. The link seemed to be removed. This was actually the patent link : appft1.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser=DN/20060099461 I did'nt remember which country the people belonged, buy Segate defiantly got the patent. I wonder why they took off the patent link !!!!
  14. If I see correctly, even after all those quoting business I still have around 35 credits, enough to apply for the service. LOl .... and that too within 2 days ... not bad I guess
  15. The link did'nt work cause the end comma (,) was being left out .... ok edited my previous post. The link should work now! Edit :: nvm .. the end comma doesn't seem to to get added try pasting this link instead into the address bar : http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/,
  16. You see .. I have not applied and neither am I interested in any of the free hosting services that this forum provides. So hosting credits don't matter to me. I browse forums of my own free will ...... and when I like it .... not expecting any rewards in return .. LOl Secondly ... PM's are not disclosed in public PM == Private Messages. You as a moderator should better know that And lastly .. you fail to provide me reasons why changelog's should be quoted. I am not against quoting for copy paste matter, why WHY should a changelog be quoted ?? You say .. that I copied the changelog. Agreed. Now, if I say .. I saw the changelog, mugged it up, learned it by heart, and then written it here ?? Prove me wrong ...... Changelog has to be written exactly similar, much like solving a mathematics problem, 2 students get the same correct answer .. and teachers can't argue that they have copied from one another. You say that I have copy pasted the changelog. But i am saying I have seen it, read it, notted down the important points, mugged them up, and then written it here ?? Prove me .. that I have copy pasted a changelog. Remember changelog has go to be the same .... (correct answer in mathematics) And lastly .. I do have read the forum rules. Quoting is done to avoid copyright infrigment's. And I know that. but just using
  17. Admin's and moderators please give me logical reasons why a chagelog should be quoted ??When we are posting changelog's it's quite obvious that we have to replace the exact same thing as placed in the developers's changelog. So wether we quote or not ... it really doesn't matter. It is assumed that a changelog when posted in some other sites ... HAS TO be taken from the developers main changelog. So why is it necessary to quote a changelog ?? It's not like I am posting the changelog .. and claiming that I have written it. Quite obvious only the developer has written that Quoting is done .. to sar that the following matter is not by me. Quoting a changelog seems ridiculous and funny LOL
  18. And to add to MS trouble already within 4 days 2 lawsuits are filled against MS accusing the original WGA notification to be a spyware
  19. 1. The Microsoft+ GDI detection rules helps to detect the presence of non-Windows(Microsoft) products that contain the GDI+ component and helps you control the security level. The tool also helps in detecting certain versions of products like .NET FRAMEWORK, Visual Studio .NET, etc. More information : http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download It is not a necessary update 2. The Windows Genuine Advantage Notification, is a new app from MS, that installs and checks your system if the Windows you are using is Genuine or not. If it is not, then you will get a popup asking to get a genuine version. This check is done at each startup of Windows, and many sites have already labelled that WGA check as a spyware and already lawsuits are files against MS regarding the WGA notification. And to add to troubles, there's already a worm that disguises as WGA notification. MS recomends this as a critical update. You may install it if you like.
  20. There's been a lot of rumor going around for days that AMD is considering to but ATI Technologies. Well there's no definite proof, or anything official , but I just came across this post in OCWorkbench.com :: So .. is this just true ???
  21. This is a good article that I found on Intel Vs. AMD ...... (both performance and business related . http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ One of the best lines I found there : Should be a good article to read
  22. So, any normal user even seeing a list of startup's or seeing the service list may not be suspecting anything since the worm disguises itself as the WGA service. Be careful of the wgavn service Solution : Run RemoveWGA for removing WGA. Still if you see any WGA service running, disable it and remove it from the services.msc list. And also search for the file and delete it. Also have a look through Autoruns if you have any instance of wgavn present in your system during startup. After removal check your system again. OR do not install WGA at all Notice from serverph: QUOTE tags added as needed.
  23. Hey .. so first perpendicular recording, and now this lubricating technology, I think there's going to be a revolution in storage medium and capacity comming very soon. ...... Imagine everyone having 10TB's of space
  24. Nice plugin ... but I see there's no search plugin for IE7 :: So I decided to make one for IE7, and also a Google search on Xisto forums. You can install the plugins from here : http://reseller.ijabry.com/
  25. Windows XP SP2 firewall is very good at blocking incomming connections. But it doesn't block outgoing connections effectively. Outpost firewall will be a better option than SP2 firewall. But since you are behind a router, having a better firewall at present may not be required. Make sure that your router is configured properly.
