windows longhorn thot it was a closed beta, think again.
Spectre replied to stevey's topic in Operating Systems
Seeing has how Windows 'Longhorn' hasn't officially been released yet, and seeing as how we are not all beta testers for Microsoft, wouldn't 'obtaining' a copy at this stage be illegal? -
No... if a physical disk is on its last legs, then you can generally bring it back to life for at least long enough to get the data off of it in the strangest of ways. Trust me, I've been doing it for years. Dropping it from about 10 inches, heating it up, spinning it around a few times on a flat surface - sounds strange, but it does often work. I think the problem is that some bearings have either become stuck, or worn down beyond the point of use - so by trying to shift them round (eg. by jarring the disk) could possibly breath life back into it again. I am aware that it's a hardware failure. And I said that the disk was 10gb, which sort of suggests that it is relatively old. And considering it stays grinding away pretty much around the clock, it has had some serious use. I would most definately not risk opening the disk - a single speck of dust on those layers can completely destroy it all. And it would be next to impossible to remove and replace them in a standard home/office environment witout a little dust being involved. The data inside would be safe - but I'm still not willing to risk 'transplanting' the discs. It's just too risky, as you said.

It's not the actual computer; just the drive. I've got like 30 boxes lying around my place, so hooking it up to a second box as a slave and ghosting it wouldn't be a problem, if the drive actually worked. Which it doesn't. So I think I'm pretty screwed.I'm too poor to fork out hundreds (or even thousands) of dollars to get the data recovered from it by some specialist.

This is the first time I've ever had to turn to the community for help... but I'm desperate. My hard disk sort of died today. It's been grinding down for ever, and it eventually kicked it in this morning. It's a 10gb drive sitting in an old IBM PC300GL I use for misc stuff - sometimes for the server, or to do misc jobs like encryption cracking, or whatever.Anyway, it's not so much the drive itself which is important - I could buy a replacement one for probobly under $10 - but having the data which I had stored on it is a matter of life or death. I'm too stupid to make regular backups, so there's about three months of work stored on there which I now can't get to, and which I didn't backup anywhere else - stupidly.I've tried just about everything that I know of to try and revive it - freezing it, running a hair-dryer over it, dropping it from about a foot, whacking the crap out of it with the butt of a screwdriver, and a few other weird but useful methods for resurecting drives I've picked up along the way - but it still isn't working.Any more suggestions, anyone? Basically, if I can't recover what I had stored on there, I might as well go and put some concrete boots on lay-by down at the local market. It really is that important. What happens when I try and get it to spin up is... absolutely nothing. The little light flashes as normal, but the motors don't kick in. It sounds like they start to churn, but then sort of give up after a second or two. Sometimes, the motors will try and start - but then it sounds like the arm that supports the head-readers are just flicking back and forth very fast, making a loud whirring sort of a sound. I've been having this problem for a while whenever I've turned the beast off and then gone to turn it back on, but usually it comes to life after flicking the power switch a few times.I am in desperate need of help here. And I can't afford to send it away to a data-recovery specialist, so don't suggest that.

Just about everything to do with Windows, or anything else from Microsoft, has at least four critical 'bugs' in it at the time of release. That's what Service Packs are for - to fix the old bugs, and create new ones.

Halo is a fantastic game, period. Counter-Strike is good as well, and has a huge following (assuming you mean the original Counter-Strike, not Condition Zero or whatever it's called) - but Halo is obviously much more advanced in the areas of graphics, artificial intelligence, and most other general aspects of the game. The difference between CS and Halo is that one has a fantastic single-player mode (although obviously, multiplayer is still more fun).

To put it simply, CO.NR 'domains' are not domain names, rather subdomains under the co.nr domain which redirect traffic to your website, and display it under your .co.nr subdomain via the usage of frames.UNI.CC domains, on the other hand, provide fully-featured DNS services. In other words, a UNI.CC 'domain' will function exactly the same as any other top-level domain - such as Xisto.com, for example.

lol, I'm sorry Genocide. There was a little mishap in communication.I don't have little faith or trust in you - I just get a little 'nervey' when things start to smell funny. What it seemed you were asking me was for root access to all of Trap 17 (not just the forum) - which I don't have, nor would be able to grant you even if I did. Then when I asked the admin about this and he said he didn't OK it in the first place as it seemed you had claimed, it began to sound like you were trying to pull something. As I said in the private message, it could be a mistake and it will be looked into and sorted out as soon as possible - I just edited your account temporarily.Anyway, everything seems to be cleared up now. Once again, my apologies.

False Requests for Information Watch out for posers
Spectre replied to Spectre's topic in General Discussion
You would be suprised what people would 'fall for', Bash. Especially if you appear to be coming from a position of authority. As I said, a real attempt to gain information would most likely sound much more convincing. I don't want to give anyone any material to work with, so I am keeping it simple here. -
odomike, I don't think you quite understand what a top-level domain is.grrlfromoz, I'm assuming by 'with email' you mean you can set up an account for say, yourname@yourname.com. Such features are generally host-dependent, more than registrar-dependant. Trap 17 supports this usage of email, regardless of where the domain is registered, provided that you park it here.

Free .net Domain? Can anyone get me a free .net domain???
Spectre replied to Alpha's topic in Websites and Web Designing
No, it won't affect your space/bandwidth at all. It will, however, cost you money. He isn't asking for a subdomain - eg. hisname.yourname.trap17.com or hisname.yourname.net - which is where I think you might be leaning. It will have absolutely nothing to do with your hosting at all. -
All MySQL databases created will have your username prefixed in the front. For example, if you created a database called 'database', it would become 'yourname_database'.You cannot have any additional underscores in the database name. And do not try and put the 'yourname_' in - it will automatically be added. If you try and create a database called 'yourname_database', it will become 'yourname_yournamedatabase'.

Free .net Domain? Can anyone get me a free .net domain???
Spectre replied to Alpha's topic in Websites and Web Designing
As I've said previously, the domain name has absolutely nothing to do with the web space, bandwidth, or anything else, other than the URL. The host is what controls how much space and other features are included. For example, if he were to register a domain name and park it with Trap 17, he would have 150 MB of space and 1GB bandwidth. -
The single biggest threat in security is the human element. Methods such as social engineering are one of the easiest ways for an intruder to gain access to information they shouldn't know. It is important that everyone watch out for false claims of authority, and requests for sensitive information - especially passwords. If you receive a private message or email from someone claiming to have permission from an administrator, or that they are in a position to rightfully have access to such information, then it is strongly recommended that you check that what they are saying is true, with either myself, or another administator. One example might be: Or another: Properly structured and planned social engineering attempts will generally be much more clever and sneaky than this, and often seem valid enough that the user is fooled into complying with whatever the attacker is requesting. Anyway, my point is just to be careful if someone starts asking for something that seems a little bit suspicious. If you see something that you don't trust, then report it to an administrator as soon as possible.

Please don't type in full capitals, odomike. This is generally considered as yelling on the Internet, and some people get the wrong impression, and take offense.

Free .net Domain? Can anyone get me a free .net domain???
Spectre replied to Alpha's topic in Websites and Web Designing
You can get top-level domains for under $10 a year. Just go and buy your own one, and then you won't owe anyone anything. -
To Kill a Mocking Bird was a good story, and it was well-written, but I didn't particularly like it. It just wasn't really my kind of book.

Swish is to Flash development as Visual Basic is to general Windows development - very easy to use, but also very limited and generally speaking, relatively slow.
