  1. Ok, I'm sure some of you have heard of the Xbox 360 firmware hack, but for those of you that haven't...Recently, a flaw was found in Microsoft's 'impenetrable' security of the Xbox 360. Don't jump out of your seat now, as it is a very min?te hack and doesn't affect the console at all, it affects the DVD drive. Through testing and searching, a small group of people who were attempting to crack the 360's security have found a small flaw that allows exactly what Microsoft doesn't want to occur. They were able to alter the Xbox 360's firmware in order to allow themselves to play copied Xbox games. This was accomplished by bypassing the media check in the firmware that reports to the 360 if the game to be played is a genuine 360 disk or if it isn't. This is a very complex hack to undergo, so I would reccomend not attempting it.Anyways, for sometime the people who have found this hack, didn't release it because they didn't intend to allow 360 games to be pirated, they wanted it for researching if it contributed to being able to run 'homebrew' games on the Xbox 360. They recently released the hack, however and now it is out in the wild. Notice from BuffaloHELP: Moved to Gaming Consoles
  2. Ahh, a typical tripod style site. No offense or anything, but I think it needs a lot of work. One thing that really drives me up a tree is when there is music playing constantly in the background. It may seem like a good idea to play the music you like, but it drastically removes from the sites professionalism. Also, your theme does not fit together at all. The typical way you used for navigation also, removes from the profesionalism of the site. Text based links, don't really cut it anymore. If anybody looks at your site and sees that, they are almost sure to not make a note of it as it really looks like a simple, slopped together site. I see lots of potential in your site, but you should work a little harder on the template.
  3. Also, some websites have slower load times than others, meaning some parts of your website will load slower than the others. Also, some web hosts don't support some of the things others do and also, sites vay in bandwith so some parts of your site could fail unexpectadly if it gets too popular. One major benefit, though would be the added webspace with all the other webhosts.
  4. Also, it would take multiple different processes to seperate each item to a fuel to be used by the car. It is a good idea, but science is nowhere near where it needs to be to even dream to achieve this. You could, however, burn all the fuels to power a boiler, but that's been thought of long ago.
  5. A motor, as stated above, will not function on 'permanent magnets' and I would like to explain exactly why, by explaining how a motor works in the first place. Ok, so as you know, a motor functions mainly on magnets, but two different kinds of magnets. A motor rotates due to attractive and repelling forces within it, this is all done with an electromagnet. Some key terms for magnets: Electromagnets, Armature, Commutator, Brushes and Field magnet. Ok, as you know a motor spins when you apply power to it. But how is this accomplished you might ask? Well, inside a motor, there is two magnets, a typical magnet (the field magnet) and an electromagnet. The electromagnet has opposite forces of the field magnet at all times. This is all accomplished by the commutator. The comutator is a little piece within a magnet that reverses the current to the electromagnet when it spins to a certain point. When the forces are reversed, the electromagnet repels the field magnet's force and spins away from it, when it gets to that point again, the commutator reverses the current yet again and the electromagnet turns to repel from it, again. That is the most basic explanation I could write, but I'd reccommend reading up on them here at How Stuff Works: [LINK]
  6. Website: Deviantart Rating: 4/10 Review: The good stuff: Deviantart is a great place for great artists to congrigate, criticise and share their work. With over 21,800,000 (that's twenty-one-million, eight-hundred-thousand! ) submissions, there is many images to choose from. There is plenty of different catagories of submissions to choose from and you can see all of the other artists 'styles'. The bad stuff. Deviantart is also plagued by 13 year old school girls who spend most of their time on the internet. Also, along with all the reasonable submissions, there is plenty of other submissions that I will say 'need work'. Well, these people will submit these 'more deficient' submissions and these school girls will refuse to criticise in any way, shape or form. They often submit plenty of messages like "Good work, keep it up" or "I <3 this one!" (keeping in mind that these submissions are 'way below par'). Deviantart is plagued with very lame comments and terms and just to list a few: 1. '<3' 2. 'Instant fav' 3. 'Kawaii' 4. 'teh sex' 5. 'I want to adopt this image' 6. 'NO!!!11! ITS ALL MINE!!!1!!' 7. 'huggles' 8. 'snuggles' 9. 'cuddles' 10. 'wuggles' Clearly, with all these people plaguing Deviantart, there is no hope for decent submissions. If anybody submits an image, that would be perfect if it wasn't for the littlest flaw, any criticsm is very quickly over-run by "I love it! FAV!" and many of the other comments listed above. You also have the option when submitting a submission to encourage criticism, discourage criticism, neutral or disable comments all together. Well, these mostly don't affect any of the comments recieved. It almost could drive a normal person insane with all these comments and I would prefer it if a filter was installed for them. Anyways, my rating is 4/10 and that is being very generous.
  7. It would be a much safer idea to just buy a new one. Opening a power supply can lead to serious damage to you and/or your computer. My old power supply had a message on it saying (WARNING: No serviceable components inside, DO NOT open.). Plus, any un-noticed solder splash could lead to major shorts. Remember, the power supply is where all the electricity from the wall heads. It is not lead through any resistors or anything, it is all there. It takes 0.001 milliamperes to stop ones heart and a typical wall outlet has much more.
  8. I've used my fair share of linux. (Redhat, Fedora Core 4) I consider it either the simplest or most complex operating system available. To carry out basic functions like e-mail, web browsing and other simple things like that are easy, but to get into the things most of us more advanced people in Windows do is much more complex. To install in Windows is a much more point and click type of idea, but in Linux, you usually have to run shell scripts (with exception of RPMs). Also, the filetypes are all different. Any person who is used to windows will have a hard time switching to Linux. EXEs are changed to RPM and SH. ZIP and RAR are changed to TAR.GZ. Also, if one is used to the command prompt in Windows, will be shocked to see a whole new world of commands. Plus, the directories are all different. C: is changed to / and D: (for most of us, anyways) is changed to /dev/mount (I believe there is another directory in mount, but it's been a while) A: is also somewhere in /dev/mount. Linux, also is alost easier to mess up if you don't know what you are doing (the root account can do anything). Linux is a great operating system, and if need be I will switch over to it again, but for now, I'm sticking with Windows.
  9. There must be a catch to this... there is no way that they will just give you fifty dollars for joining their service. Has anybody attempted this? I would really like to know what the catch is, please post with your results if you do.
  10. I like how you integrated the text with the background. It's good to see somebody who is familiar with photo shop. Also, did you airbrush that angel thing in? I, personally don't really like anime in sigs (though I watch Inuyasha all the time!) but this time it really fits with the overall appearance. I like how well you combined grunge with tech style sigs.
  11. That is basically free energy, which is impossible by today's standards. The energy to recompress the air will never be the same as needed to run the engine. It just would never work. Ahh, I believe the thing you are reffering to is hydrogen powered cars. Hydrogen is explosively flammable, and is a great replacement for gas to run an engine. The area where water comes in, is the tailpipe of the car. The spent hydrogen fuel travels through the exhaust and once it meets air, it combines with the oxygen in the air to create water. H20 (water) is 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom.
  12. How could this increase our programming language as many of us don't even know the basic functions of C/C++. It would look like gibberish to many. Could make for some great knockoffs, though.
  13. We are already killing our planet, the only reason it was around so much longer than us is because we never existed. How could we possibly survive the ozone layer being depleted, all the heat from the sun would roast us easily. Also, no matter how many people attempt to prevent this, we have already dug our grave. I couldn't simply stop polluting and throwing out trash, it's the way I grew up. So many others couldn't either Yes, but if we could somehow emulate emotions, then why wouldn't the robots decide to take us over. Unless we make them live to support us, then they could decide what they feel they want to do with us. How would you possibly want to live underneath something you created? I prefer the life I live now. I would like a robot to help around the house, but not one that can make decisions for me. Anything is possible, just think. We were at some point in time, first discovering fire. We had computers the size of a living room and they ran on vaccume (SP?) tubes. We have microchips now and computers 100x as powerful that run on your lap. We used to listen to records, now we con store thousands of songs in our pockets. Why couldn't we emulate emotions in the near future? Perhaps, a better question to ask is, Why would we want to give a machine that is much more powerful than us and that could think way faster than us emotions? What if we pissed it off?
  14. Aren't floppies already outdated? Remember, the CD-ROM? lol But that would be a great idea, to just release software on USB drives. You get a much faster access rate and you don't need to wait for the USB port to spin up, lol. Also, I would think that the Idisk is definately an interesting one. 128 mb is quite alot for something like that, cellphones can't even hold nearly that much. Just imagine the size of things in the near future. Hell, maybe we will have made these so small that they fly through the air without us even seeing them. Then, when we want to download a file, maybe they will be attracted to our computer and then mount themselves and boom, a file . lol
  15. Sp2 is as far as Microsoft got, so I think you're a bit off. Also, that is a typical messaging service thing. It is simply using your system's messaging service to advertise on your computer. It sends it's messages to random IP addresses. Update Windows and that service, by default, will be shut down. I would also reccommend Windows Onecare, available on the Microsoft website. Also, the messaging service, just in case you were wondering, was originally used for Admins and Users of a related computing group to contact eachother from any location as long as the IP address that the computer to be messaged was known. Also, they cannot harm your computer in any way. Good luck on correcting this problem!
  16. Personally, I'm completely against pirating (exactly what the TPC is attempting to prevent) as it ruins entire game companies through the drain in profit. Amiga is an example, they went out of business due to the availability to pirated software. I honestly won't notice a change except when downloading music when the Trusted Platform Environment is introduced. Pirates already got a small taste of it with Microsoft's new Windows Genuine Advantage authentication. I am happy to see these things introduced as I can sit safer knowing that the companies that have a hard start at developing software, have a little more security against pirates. Basically, as long as you intend to purchase all of the software you use, you won't notice much of a difference.
  17. It's definately a good image, did you create it all? Also, text wise, try lowering the opacity and the outer glow, that should make it look somewhat cleaner. Also, try setting the outer glow settings to normal and making the color white. Also, you should make the text slightly smaller (like 25 pixels). Anyways, try that out and post up what you end up with!
  18. How does the amount of RAM in your laptop affect the theme? Also, I have a wolf background I made. I got the picture from a free stock photography site and edited it to my own desire. Heres a [LINK] if you want to check it out. (You'd better!) Oh yeah, and it's on Deviantart just in case you were wondering...
  19. A question about the ram mentioned above: What is the bus speed that this ram works at? I know SDRAM runs at 133 mh/z and DDR RAM runs at about 266 mh/z (correct me if I'm mistaken) but what is the bus speed of the ram inside a processor?
  20. I also think some of you are forgetting, AI is everywhere. When you play Need For Speed, there is AI controlling the traffic. When you program a television for certain ratings, there is AI determining which shows to block. I believe that almost anything that can carry out multiple functions based on the state of the input (Need For Speed example: Red lights, Other cars, Turns, Collisions) (Television example: PG, PG-13, R, M) is, in fact AI. Though, I'm sure a dictionary could prove me wrong, that's what I believe
  21. Also, what program are you using to theme your desktop? Before you answer, have you ever tried litestep? Do a google search for litestep. I, personally prefer it as it replaces everything. It does not run explorer as shell, it runs itself as shell. You can customize anything, including the right click menu on the desktop. Also, @michaelper22: You can get many desktop themes that have that kind of transparency. In fact, you can even get vista themes.
  22. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- That is the signature I use on Xbox-Scene. It was created using Photoshop and includes only one image. The image of the wolf I used was found on a simple google search for 'black wolf'. I used the polygonal lasso (SP?) tool to select the eyes and used Hue and Saturation to color them. The text bar is a simple reflected gradient set to low opacity. The font is arial, I believe. I had to darken the pupils of the eyes with the air brush tool and I also painted in some fur around the face. The background is a simple gray colour. Also, I played around with the brightness/ contrast of the wolf.
  23. How could a virus affect your hard drive? Also, I believe some of these trojan writers are doing it for the money. They could easily throw a keylogger in there and wait for somebody to access their bank account. Though, worms and all of that other stuff I think are just there to annoy you. It is kind of annoying how many more of these pieces of code these programmers crap out. They may get a kick out of being on the news and all, but they have no idea how much damage they have done. There are plenty of people out there who lose a lot of information, just because somebody decided to write some dumb little app that destroys their computer. Heck, maybe even somebody found a cure for cancer and a virus wiped it out. These people must learn that the things they create can damage them more than they think. Ok, a couple years ago, where the computer was relatively unused in terms of reasearch/ development and it was incredibly costly to have one in the first place then I would have no problem with the odd virus, maybe even get a laugh out of my own stupidity. But nowadays, everything is on my computer, everything revolves around my computer and a virus could easily ruin everything. EDIT: Sorry, but to the person using Norton for virus scanning, I would reccommend changing or getting an additional virus scanner. There is plenty of viruses out there that actually seek out Norton's software.
  24. Same here, mine beeps once all the time and never has had a problem starting up. Also, do you know what brand of BIOS (I think that's what affects it, anyways) you're doing this from? Also, If it is in fact, irrelevant, then I would like to add that one long beep means that is important for fixing locked xbox hard drives, it means that your BIOS cannot unlock it (no bios, except the xbox's can).
  25. Ok. I have recently thought of a great idea for a website! This website would be a site designed solely (SP?) for the purpose of finding music. No, it wouldn't find the song you are looking for by the name of it (why then would you be looking for it in the first place? ), it would find the song by the tune of it. Users would enter basic notes into a prompt for the search function and upon submit, the site would retrieve the most relevant matches. This could all be achieved by converting the basic notes into a text format and then comparing it with all of the other songs listed. (I did not think up the text idea, one of the people I know who are interested in development of this site did) Also, the website would include a submit function. Again, users would submit basic notes along with song information. The users, then could upload the actual song and then they would be brought into an editor. The users would have to pick a defined length of the song to use for a sample. The sample would be used to ensure that the song that has been retrieved is, in fact, the one they were looking for. I would hope that the site could somehow become merged with one of the more popular music download sites as I would hope to include a link to download from that site. Also, somehow, I would like to include the function to login to their account on the music website to use for actual download, on the music searching one. And also, maybe include the ability to create an account for that website on the music finding one. Oh, and also, users should be able to create a free account, so they can submit and keep track, delete, or edit their submissions. Also, one other basic things to include would be a forum, for discussion of the music and complaints/ compliments of the service. I realize that this was not created too well, so if you need anything clarified, then feel free to ask. And, just in case anybody is interested, they may go to the forum I have made for the development of it. [LINK]
