  1. Wow, this kid knows what he's doing. If a 14 year old can find out how to run outside code in Gmail, think what a hacker could do. But I hope nothing happens to Gmail, I use it for everything.
  2. Yeah, I just recently installed SuSE 10.1, and it is making so much difference than 10.0. First of all, I can finally get my ethernet card working through the distro and I finally have internet on the Linux Machine, which means now I can run web servers on a decent operating system . But it is the easiest distro I have ever used to set up a Samba server, which lets one use Windows networks with Linux machines. I have also been able to install some decent software. The killer is though, that SuSE can make an old Pentium 4 Windows ME machine useable; all it used to do was crash and spit out BSOD and Error messages at me, it was a real pain. I reccommend SuSE to anyone wanting to enter Linux, or anyone who wants an easy replacement for a crappy operating system.
  3. I love FL Studio. My favorite feature is being able to import different sound effects and using them in the program. I use it like a drum and rhythm composer, and that seems to work. It's really complex, and I would recommend it to anyone with an interest in this field. There is a free version that has alot of features, but when you buy the program, it becomes complete.
  4. There is software out there to restore disks, but they rarely work and usually make the problem worse. This happened to me and I used drivesavers.com and they sent me all of the data on DVDs. If you want drive recovery from a company, here are some of my favorites.
  5. Who needs freeware, open source is where it's at! Open Source programs are awesome.
  6. Couldn't you just chown the music, or if that didn't work, have you tried Chmoding the music 777?
  7. Well, I know that you can currently emulate OS X. It's not nearly the speed of a real mac, but it is coming along nicely. I do know for a fact that Apple is adding software called Boot Camp that lets you run Windows XP on OS X, check it out here: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/. It aparantly runs at full speed, and you would think that some kind of deal was struck, so we might see Macs running on Win32 machines soon, you never know.
  8. I used to use 7.0 and was fine with it, but after I upgraded to CS2, I never looked back. Here are some good tutorial websites: http://www.pegaweb.com/tutorials/web-design-and-adobe-photoshop-tutorials.htm http://www.absolutecross.com/tutorials/photoshop
  9. Yeah, I love SmartFTP. It has alot of good features and is a fully functional for personal use. You have to buy it for corporate use, but you don't have to worry about that. There are many open source FTP clients that all have their uses, and they are much smaller. And, of course, if you use Firefox, there is always FireFTP, which is an extension to Firefox, very handy. Links!
  10. I like Konqueror and Firefox, but that's just me. >_>
  11. I suggest after you get your PC, take off all the crap that comes with it (AOL trials and the like) and add Open Source software likeFirefox (https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/)Thunderbird (https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/)SmallWindows (http://smallwindows.sourceforge.net/)The OpenOffice Suite (http://www.openoffice.org/)GIMP (https://www.gimp.org/windows/)

    Can't Open Pdf

I would use Firefox and get the PDF plugin available at Mozilla update (http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/) and run that. If that doesn't work, you could always download PDF's (Right Click > Save Target As) and use an external viewer. Links to external PDF viewers: https://get.adobe.com/reader/otherversions/ https://www.foxitsoftware.com/products/pdf-reader/
  13. Do you have a boot disk on hand? If you don't get on a different computer and go to this website (http://www.bootdisk.com/) and get one, I recommend a windows XP copy. Or you can go the Linux route and get a linux live cd. I reccommend KNOPPIX (http://www.knoppix.org/) That has a graphical interface and it's easier to back up your data. If you manage to get one of those running, you can either attempt to recover your disk, or reformat the disk. Hope you can get it working again!
  14. You can always turn off images and HTML coding. I believe Firefox has extensions that will yet you do that. Any way you can make a low fi version of a site, do it. If you can, upgrade your modem or replace it with a new modem card. There are many ways to upgrade your speed, but remember, you can only go as fast as your modem line and service. If its not going as fast as you want to, change providers!
  15. I use BitComet, only because uTorrent doesn't run on my computer for some reason. I find it gives decent speeds. I never liked BitLord, mainly because all it is is a lower version of BitComet, Azureus lags and sucks up ram. BitTornado would never accept any trackers. I used to use the Linux version, until my Linux box crashed and died, one of these days I'll have to fix it, I love Linux. >_> But I do want to try uTorrent someday.
  16. I was wondering if any of you guys knew of any good pop email clients. I recently signed up for a pop client, but I was wondering what the best client was. People say Outlook is full of bugs and freezes constantly. I am told that open source is the way to go. I'm not familiar with any open source pop clients. If anyone has any suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated. I am running Windows XP. Notice from jlhaslip: No "sign - offs, please add it to your sig block via the profile manager. Thanks
  17. I really like Knight Online, Gunbound, and Rakion. Gunbound and Rakion are by the same developer (softynx). I used to play Knight for a while, but then my account was deleted. Right now i'm playing World of Warcraft and i'm loving it. Rogues are the best class ever IMO. I recently played Guild Wars but didn't like it nearly as much as World of Warcraft. I suggest Rakion if you haven't played it.
  18. Mainly because they either want the "glory" of making a virus, even though the next day theres patches for it, or they want money. They attach advertising and spamming robots and make your computer a "robot" or "zombie" computer. Then the more computers they can effect, the more money they make or the more credit card numbers they can steal or the more security they can compromise.
  19. Yeah, I really dislike Lycos. I was almost hacked many times with exes people have put in my FTP folder. There are tons of "hack lycos" websites everywhere with ways to sql inject in their database. I wouldn't and won't use it ever again.
  20. I love ZoneAlarm. I had a few problems with it when I first got it, but after forwarding ports and adding exceptions to everything, which is so much easier to do that other firewalls, it works like a charm. Looking at my configuration now, 104840 intrusions have been blocked. I find that amazing. >_>
  21. I would suggest that you change your hotmail password as soon as you can, and if possible, move your email account to a different host, your name probably won't be taken. After you have created a new account, change all your newsletters if you subscribe to any to your new account, and update all of your frequent website accounts to the new email, it will be like you never left.Alot of websites have more features than hotmail, and offer more space.I strongly reccommend Gmail if you want space. 1G+ for each email account is alot.Free web based email --- http://yahoo.com/ https://www.mail.com/int/ https://www.bluebottle.com/ (spam protected)http://www.mail.lycos.com/ There are tons of choices, read up on all of them and take your pick.
  22. You have the Blaster worm. Try downloading ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonealarm.com/) and enable that. Then update your Windows system with Windows Update. That should fix the problem, the worm is pretty old, and that should take care of it, if it doesn't, it is not the blaster worm. If you go into the command prompt and type shutdown -a, that will reset the countdown.
  23. Make sure you aren't using an operating system that can only support a limited hard disk (Windows 98) If you are using Windows XP, try disconnecting your first hard drive, put the second in it's place, and see if that works. Assuming your first HDD is the master HDD, make sure your second HDD is set to be a slave hard disk. Two master hard drives can cause alot of trouble. If none of those work, keep your first hard drive out, get a boot disk (I reccommend a Windows XP boot disk) and try using Fdisk on it and reformat it. If you are still having problems, I recommend a full reformat. There are programs that will completly wipe out your harddrive, more than the Windows boot disk will, this should fix it, if it doesn't, it is not your hardware.
  24. Google ads target you in certain ways. Usually on the page your on, they scan for words that are used the most that match their advertising query. If Macromedia is on the page 100 times, there is going to be ads for the Macromedia suite of programs. Google advertising also works in the form of hover advertising. Key words are underlined with green lines, and when you hover over them, a bubble comes up stating where you can buy a product related to that word. Its gotten pretty sophisticated.
  25. Alright, its a standard messenger malware prompt. I suggest first of all to run HijackThis. It is a program that scans your system for unauthorized software. You can find it at http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/. After that it will give you a log, give that to a HijackThis expert, and he/she will tell you what to do. After that, your system should be somewhat stable. Then to finalize the cleaning, run Spybot S&D, found here: https://www.safer-networking.org/ run that using the walkthough on the website, clean everything. Then run Adaware, found here: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ run that using the walkthough on the website. Then to shield your system, I suggest you get at least one firewall. My personal favorite is ZoneAlarm, found here: http://www.zonealarm.com/. I find that it's the easiest to configure and is still very powerful. And the final thing you should do is shut off Windows Messenger. To do that on Windows XP Home, (This is assuming you are using the category view in Control Panel) Click Start, then Control Panel. Double-click Performance and Maintenance. Double-click Administrative Tools. Double-click Services. Highlight/ right-click on Messenger Choose Properties and in the "Startup type" list choose Disabled. Click Stop, and then click OK.
