  1. Well, in a litteral sense, the world isn't running out of water. It's just that the world's water supply is being shared by an increasing amount of people. With earth's population on the rise, it could well reach a day when there just isn't enough for everyone.I think the 'cheapest' solution would be us being more aware of how we use our water and not wasting it. With the weather behaving so erratically, it won't be long before we have to start buying fresh water from countries that have it, or privatising water (as with the on-going debate in South America).
  2. I bought a laser printer because I was constantly frustrated with my inkjet cartridges (especially the colour ones that I used only for the occasional school project) drying out. I wasn't very 'printer-savy' nor did I know of how to protect the cartridges when they were not in use.Ever since I ported over to buying toner, I haven't looked back.I'm not quite sure how inkjets are packaged these days, but perhaps a small leaflet with some quick tips on how to prolong the life of inkjet cartridges might be useful. Or yes, some sort of mechanism could be implemented.
  3. MYST was just one of those games that drove me nuts.I was probably around 10 or 11 years old at the time and those puzzles seemed impossible to figure out. A bunch of friends and I had the game and we would spend hours on end trying to crack it. We didn't know that strategy guides/walkthroughs existed until after we had finished the game. Heck, I even remember our parents having to help out...If I remember correctly, the game had this eerie music and just the whole vibe was kinda creepy. I never quite understood the ending either, with the red & blue books...I should find that cd and give it another whirl.
  4. I don't think that we are becoming "more and more obsessed with religion as we are evolving". Au contraire, I believe that we're deviating more and more away from religion as we understand how life 'works'. As we evolve, our understanding of the intracacies of life increases. Just take a look at how far science has come along. Heck, the church was once more powerful than the king. Is that the case today? No doubt, religion is such a deep-rooted concept that will never fade away. There are bound to be believers and followers... but to the extent where "us evolving = an increased obsession"? I don't think so. That's just my humble opinion, of course.
  5. I believe that life is what you make of it.There is no puppeteer or secret conspirators plotting out the course of your life or anybody's life for that matter.Your thoughts, decisions, actions are independently your own (although some might argue otherwise) and it is you who ultimately controls your life, your fate. And yes, I lean much more toward evolutionism than toward creationism. Feel free to critique away...
  6. During the academic year, I usually keep in touch with my mom through e-mail or phone calls. I found out about Skype a while back but hadn't really bothered in trying it out. However, when I returned home last Christmas, I decided to give it a shot. I taught my mom how to use the program and we've been using it to keep in contact ever since. No more pre-paid phone cards or long distance phone plans. Just click and dial away.I do find it to be a little laggy at times, moreso after my computer had been on suspend mode.

    Steam

I believe you also need the Steam client to log online and play against other players around the globe. Steam is pretty much manditory for multiplayer modes for both Half-Life, Half-Life 2 and their respective mods like Counter-Strike, Day of Defeat, among others...
  8. Right now, I'm sitting at around 29 credits. My initial goal was to build up about a year's worth of credits (just in case I get amnesia and forget that I have a site hosted by Xisto). But reality kicked in and I realized just how impractical (timewise) it would be for me to work toward 365 credits...Now, I've pretty much just scrapped that idea altogether. My focus has shifted to contributing meaningful posts and just tossing out the stuff that's dwelling in the corner of my mind.Cheers
  9. Hi XZ,First off, welcome to Xisto. I think your message might be a bit misplaced but I'm sure one of the moderators can fix that later on.To reply to your question though (hopefully you check back), it doesn't take long to get the 30 credits. In fact, don't focus on the 'credits'. Focus on contributing good posts to this forum. The credits will come naturally (based on the quality, not quantity of your posts). So browse around, have fun and speak/type what's on your mind. Remember to follow the posting rules though. Contribute and in no time, you'll have the credits necessary to get your site running.Peace up.
  10. Just a few quick suggestions:-Try varying up the fonts. https://www.acidfonts.com/ is a great website to get some fresh fonts.Remember though, fonts that you have might not be fonts that we have. Try putting them into an image file and substituting that image file where your text would normally go. Cool fonts definitely add kick to any website.-Symmetry always looks nice. Perhaps line up the links in the top using the <center> or <align> tag.-I like the black and red. I like the black and yellow. I like the black and white. But somehow the black + red + yellow + white seems a little distracting. An idea would be to stick to a colour theme... Pick your fav three colours: a background, a contrast and an intermediate. Work with those and add variety by selecting different shades of those colours, e.g. firetruck red, scarlet, dark pink etc.-I find the flash/title banner with the scrolling & expanding text to take away from the site's overall appeal. It looks a little too flashy. That's just my opinion.-Grey mouseovers... consider revising to suit your colour theme-Pictures say a thousand words. More images would surely kick up your site's flair. How about a picture of an electric guitar, something with spikes (I'm not too familiar with the metal genre but I think you catch my drift).-Try compressing your website. I didn't check the source code but if you've built the website with tables, try tweaking the table's width to say... "900" and center it. It depends what you're going for. I personally like to leave some space on both sides.I hope that helps! Those are of course just my suggestions. Great start and keep up the good work!
  11. Hehe, good topic I used to be the one who, without hesitation, would say that I'd choose love over money. I guess I'm speaking out of biterness now but after so many relationships that never worked out (I'll crop the details), money seems to be the safer bet.I still believe in love though and would probably be foolish enough to trade all my life-savings to have another chance at it. I guess nobody ever said that a rich person can't find 'true' love either.
  12. *comment: whoa, this is probably my longest reply yet. Hang tight!I saw ?Super Size Me? a while back and thought that it was an entertaining documentary. As a whole, I think that the movie had a rather profound effect on McDonalds (probably a financial one, to say the least) as I?ve noticed a significant change to their menu in recent times. McDonalds has strived to increase the amount of veggies in their long array of selectable menu/combo options. The introduction of their own line of salads, more lettuce in burgers and wraps? the list goes on.But drawing back to the central question of this thread, do I think McDonalds is contributing to obesity in children?Summary: Yes. I do believe that Ronald and his posse ?were? doing a damn good job.Kids like to play in the jungle gyms. Sure. I agree with that. But children also like the toys, toys that are given to them only if the parents buy the Happy Meal. Children also like fries, fries that are part of that same meal. Kids know what they want and when they want it (they cry, bicker, create a scene), parents oblige because they want to see their kids happy. Personally, I feel that the marketing scheme set forth by McDonalds is to target kids and only recently have that started to shift directions. Once kids are drawn in, parents follow suit. Here?s the other side of the fence ? my rationale for putting the ?were? in quotations. There is no doubt that parents play a huge (and I cannot stress this enough) part in their children?s upbringing. Children will look up to their parents and follow whatever model has been set up by them: dietary choices being the one of focus here. If parents eat Big Macs and fries often, so will the children. Poor choices will lead to poor parenting which will subsequently lead to the poor upbringing of their offspring.***Now, to address the issue of obese people suing someone/some corporation for causing their obesity. This reminds me of the time when a lady won her case after suing McD for not putting ?hot? on the coffee cup after she had spilt the coffee and burned herself. I think that?s just idiotic. Clearly anyone with common sense would know that coffee is hot. Likewise, it should also be common sense that unhealthy dietary choices will lead to obesity and other diseases. I find it sad when people use this as an opportunity to score some extra cash rather than to deal with their problems with dignity. Of course, we should not undermine the fact that obesity is in fact an inheritable disease and those individuals suffering from it should not be subjected to discrimination. ***And finally, the deal with school serving up unhealthy meals. A lot of school have contracts with companies like coca-cola (and their derivatives) and these companies regulate what foods can be served in the school. The principal (or other higher ups) usually choose this alternative because it generates more money for the school ? money that can be used, as was mentioned, for repairs, buying new equipment, etc.***My final comment: a proper diet is without a doubt pivotal to a healthy lifestyle. Essential nutrients (not made but required by the body) can only be obtained through the consumption of food. In fact, the line that divides ?healthy? and ?unhealthy? foods is pretty vague. McDonalds isn?t necessarily ?bad? for your body. It?s just that anything in excess does more harm than good. It?s all about balance and moderation.
  13. They call themselves rage clans because they fuel on anger - your anger. It makes them happy to see you angry: angry after a teamkill, angry after being victim number 5 in a series of headshots, angry for them blocking an entrance/exit... In my opinion, that's bs.People who can't play games fairly shouldn't be playing them in the first place.People who play games for the sake of annoying others need to get up from the computer and find their missing lives.
  14. My favourite weapon has to be the combat knife.-Nothing is more satisfying that grabbing a knife frag on an opponent carrying a gun.In terms of guns though, pistol: beretta elitesshotgun: nonesmg: fn p90riffle: m4a1sniper: steyr scout
  15. Although I?m agnostic, I have nothing against the idea of religion and God as a whole. In fact, I respect others? beliefs as I feel that everyone is entitled to practice their religion and worship their respective Gods.I have mixed feelings about the question. There is, in essence, nothing wrong with the concept of religion. It allows many people to find solace, gives them something to believe in, provides them with hope, establishes the guiding principles of life to live by?The problem, as I see it, is interpretation.Too often, religion is used as a scapegoat; an excuse for the world?s problems. Religion can be a very subjective thing and (as extreme a comparison I might be making) like books and movies, have different meaning to different people.Problems arise when people fail to admit their problems and shift the blame. Rather than look inward, they displace outward and religion then becomes the vehicle to disseminate their problems. Hence, the whole ?these are my actions because it is what the *religious document* told me to do?. Religion when ?misinterpreted? by people in positions of power is even more tragic.I believe it was Karl Marx who once said ?Religion is the opiate of the masses?.I?ll end my post on that note.
  16. Vodka in the morning eh?You sure that's the best way to start off the day Heh, based on the flavour set, it reminds me vaguely of a drink called the "Cloud 9"Cheers!
  17. I would have to agree with Cerebral in that this concept sounds too much like a video game. Assuming that iStats (funny name, I must commend) becomes a reality, I?m just not too sure how receptive people would be in having a device like this installed/implanted into them? Take a look at how much information overload there is already in our everyday lives. Having ?revolving virtual iPod shaped screens? hovering over every living individual just doesn?t seem, well, beneficial. And yes, how would that help in identifying us as 'human' from 'machine'?
  18. I strongly agree with Moolkye.Don?t confuse ?love? with something else. Put aside all things and be honest with yourself. Running away from a problem is not a way to solve it.If you can?t decide, then it is perhaps you who doesn?t ?love?.
  19. As a university student currently studying in Canada, I take on a slightly different standpoint regarding this issue. Needless to say, I understand where many of you are coming from when noting that too much emphasis has been placed on varsity sports.I think we would all agree that different talents lie in different people. Athletes will excel in athletics. Scholars will excel in academia. Belonging to either group (or any other group that I?ve left out for the sake of simplicity) will have both advantages and disadvantages. My point really is this: no matter where your talents lie, there is bound to be someone, albeit the university, an independent organization, the government etc. that will acknowledge and appreciate what it is that makes you unique. Consequently, you?ll be ?compensated? for your hard work e.g. if you have a high GPA, the university may award you an entrance scholarship. I think the real problem lies in whether or not we are willing to look for this ?compensatory source?.There are also a lot of in-course scholarships that are offered to students who perform well academically and/or have shown initiatives in extra-curricular activities. Science-inclined students can rest assure that there are paid research positions (summer and during the year) that are offered exclusively to students who do well in school. But then there?s the issue of competition. Everyone will want those spots and it?ll be up to you to show your worth.I?ll end off this reply with something that my high school English teacher once told us. ?Just look at the word University? he said. ?Cut out the first part and what do you get? ?Universal? *his hands drawing out a circle in the air as if demonstrating what a sun along the horizon would look like*. Universities ultimately want to look for students who are well-rounded ? universal, global people who excel in various things. A good student will do well in school. A great student will not only do well in school but will also find other activities to better him/herself?.Good luck.
  20. Drinking is a personal choice and as with all choices, come with their respective consequences. No way should getting drunk be an excuse for cheating in a relationship.
  21. I favour Google over other search engines because of its simple layout and quick response. I was once an avid user of Altavista and Askjeeves but ever since a friend dared me to use Google as my homepage for a week, there has been no turning back.My top five entries into the good 'ol Google search box are as follows:remix (or some music production term)artist + lyricsnewsmapsfunny videosI use to (and still do, to many extent) rely on Google for school/university work. Pubmed is another top-class search engine that I rely heavily on for peer-reviewed research papers.
  22. Hi there! Like many individuals (particularly university students who are in the field of science), I aspire to be a doctor. About two weeks ago, I was having a huge debate with myself as to whether or not I should take a prep course, or try to tackle this monstrous test with my own study regime. I eventually settled on relying on my own wits - partly because I believe that anything is achievable provided that the dedication, motivation and perseverance are all there but also because prep-courses are not cheap (and well, I’m not exactly the richest student). In preparation for this, I’ve already started reviewing my physical science and biological science material. So far, I’ve been focusing on the ‘big picture’ as opposed to the ‘fine details’. Google has helped immensely in terms of providing direction into ‘areas of focus’. The reason for this post, however, is a call for your help. I realize that it is not only impractical but also impossible for me to read textbooks in preparation for the MCATs and that ultimately, I would have to invest in some form of prep-material, albeit, Examkrackers, the Kaplan books, among others. Before I start spending, however; I was wondering if anyone knew of certain places on the web (not easily located by Google) that offers free resources e.g. past practice tests, review manuals… etc. or alternatively, if you the reader might have some resources that you wouldn’t mind sharing with me. I don’t mean for this message to be interpreted as me ‘being cheap’, or ‘begging’. I am going through a rough time financially and would appreciate any form of help. Many thanks Notice from serverph: topic not suited for the THE MIGHTY GOOGLE SEARCH! forums. moved. review Xisto forum rules & TOS.
  23. For me, it has to be fy_iceworld. Hands down.It has to be one of the simplest and fastest maps out there. Quick rounds, lots of frags and plenty of chaos on a full server.Frag on.
  24. The following is coming from a guy's perspective: There are so many times when I wish to have chosen friendship as opposed to relationship. Nonetheless, love is a very impromptu kind of thing and could very well be the best thing in life. Attraction, however, is constantly changing. Just think it through and make sure that this is what you want before jumping into a new relationship. Follow your heart but don't neglect your head. Good luck.
  25. That's quite the way to hit off a relationship. I'm happy that things have worked out for you. Personally, I'm still a skeptic when it comes to online dating. I would much rather meet someone for the first time in real life. A friend of mine has been thinking about trying it though. I guess I'll be a good friend and support his decision.
