  1. Shouldn't Windows be activated when you purchase your computer from the manufacturer (e.g. Dell)? Unless you have some spyware running on your computer or that you upgraded 2 or more components, you don't need to manually activate Windows I don't think.
  2. What is wrong with using plain old HTML, JavaScript and CSS with the Lightbox script to display the images? I find that there is more control over that than following all of this instruction.
  3. Don't worry the problem is solved now. I am enjoying Linux quite a bit and learning command line stuff bit by bit slowly.Anyone recommend anything with graphics on the old Windows 98 machine?
  4. There are lots of people doing signature designs out there, but my question is: What makes a signature good? How do you differentiate from a legible signature from an awesome one? They all look unique to me, I Find each one of them being well done. Things that annoy me are flashy things, and those are quite uncommon. Can people give some ideas as to what I should do to create a good forum signature? Thanks.
  5. I am working on a project with files at different locations, some duplicates. I want it to be synchronized to the newest version available (most recent version) at most places, here are where my files are scattered across:1. FAT32 partitionRead by Linux and Windows, I do most of my file editing from home on this partition. It is accessible at home only.2. USB Flash DriveFor editing at school, I edit the files on this drive.3. Server (at Xisto)This is accessed using File Manager at home and at school. I can upload files conveniently here from home (see next point). The files are for testing purposes of PHP, they are publicly viewable as a preview of what is going to be on the live server.4. Live Server (at school)Accessed by Telnet, this server can only be accessed at school computers. A firewall (both on the Linux server and also the general firewall) prevents any connection to it from other locations. I use FTP to upload files there, it is where the site is publicly viewable. So obviously it is going to be hard to synchronize and keep track of the different version of files here. #3 is always going to be a bit newer than #4, because that's what I call a "beta preview". The files on #2 may be a bit older than #1. I want them to be synchronized to the newest versions.Anything to help me do this without manually checking every Date Modified field manually?
  6. Ok obviously that was copied from Wikipedia or another wiki. Yep, it is exactly https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_design. I don't know if you copied the introduction paragraphs from another forum or what, but perhaps you can refer to a specific page instead of coping huge texts into a post. The formatting is lost in the forum, and it is hard to read, especially because it is entirely wrapped up in a quote tag. Please point us to the article if you wish to discuss it on the forum, thanks.
  7. But even though they "explicitly block" the browsers, they aren't blocked, at least not on my system. So they don't know how to do it/what they are doing.
  8. Go ahead and use Netscape, Mozilla, Firefox, other newer Gecko based browsers to view this page. Please feel free to use Linux, Unix or a Macintosh computer to see this. DO NOT use Internet Explorer 5.5, Internet Explorer 6 or AOL 7 to view this page (at least do it in the other browser first). http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ The site is apparently "Explicitly blocked and not supported" (by developers who don't know how). Seriously, with ASP they should be able to seek through HTTP headers and find the appropriate browsers to block. And also: What is wrong with using Mozilla-based browsers to visit your site? I can understand if you do not wish to support older software by blocking older versions, but blocking Mozilla-based software is totally unacceptable because there is nothing wrong with using Firefox to browse your site! I've read that in the UK alternative browser support is higher than in North America. If true, that means that you are shutting out quite a bit of your users. But wait, you don't even block them.
  9. There weren't any phone charges, but they really should transfer properly. I mean the tech person said that they would stay on the line until I got to where I pressed options...4 seconds later..."Your call cannot completed at this time/beep beep".I do have Ubuntu installed on my hard drive, but I do need Windows for some stuff (my parents prefer Microsoft Office, I need to test my sites on Internet Explorer, etc).
  10. I frequently use a variety of CSS and HTML tags/selectors, so I remember at least 75% of the CSS and almost 100% of HTML elements (not attributes though). I also work with other languages such as PHP, MySQL, XML, XSLT and at rare occasions SVG. I am getting better at remembering stuff from PHP/MySQL, as for XML, you invent your own tags.XHTML is a bit different from HTML, mostly syntax but other stuff too. I work in XHTML mostly, but I mustn't forget Internet Explorer
  11. I know that I like GUI also, I don't like command-line interfaces. I've tried WUBI, I didn't like it a lot. I prefer install Ubuntu through the Ubuntu installer, no command-line involved. As for running Windows applications, you can use the WINE software for Linux. It can run almost any Windows application, except for Microsoft Office and Internet Explorer (but you have OpenOffice and Firefox, so that doesn't matter).Try it and see, I am constantly learning new things in Ubuntu to improve my skills.
  12. The Microsoft Phone Support is $50 for certain software or if your software/operating system came OEM. Otherwise, it is supposed to be "no-charge", but I always ask before describing the details. I could have waited to connect to the appropriate area, they automatically transferred me to the US then to Canada assuming that I was waiting too long.
  13. The point is that at least there is some form of parental controls compatible with Mozilla Firefox. And if Mac has parental controls, then integrate it with them also. I couldn't find any effective 3rd party parental controls for Firefox anyways.
  14. I just found this out!!! Really cool that Mozilla developers are doing this: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
  15. Recently, I received an email from Microsoft about the Windows Live OneCare BETA that they enabled Online Photo Backup. They gave me a product key to activate the software, but I couldn't find a place to put that in. I phoned Microsoft Support and... 1. Called Microsoft OneCare support at 1 (866) 662 2273. 2. Pressed 1 and then 2. 3. Listened to repetitive messages about Windows Marketplace, MSN Billing and Windows Live OneCare. 4. Connected to a person, filled out profile info such as email, name and phone number and described problem. 5. Got transferred to the Windows Live OneCare team (huh?) 6. Transfer was disconnected by crappy systems. 7. Called Microsoft at number which the other person provided, 1 (866) 672 4551. 8. No person there, just a machine explaining about MSN stuff. 9. Retried step 1 through 4. 10. Steps 5 and 6 happened again. 11. Called the Microsoft Canada support line, a friendly person answered. 12. Transferred me to the US support line. 13. Somehow got rerouted back to Canada. 14. The support person answered, transferred me but got disconnected. 15. Repeat step 1 through 6 three times. 16. The third time, someone answered and was the correct support team. 17. Found support incident on my profile. 18. Informed me that beta versions weren't covered by tech support (OMG those other people that answered could have told me that!) 19. Told me I need to buy Windows Live OneCare in order to enter a product key. 20. Directed me to a beta OneCare support line on the OneCare website. 21. Couldn't find the appropriate options. I tried Internet Explorer and the same thing came up. 22. Found that US and Canada pages were different. 23. Connect to a Microsoft chat line, which was automated and was not helpful. 24. Was told to go to a site that was not linked on the Microsoft website. 25. Instructed me to type in Online Photo Backup, but didn't specify where. 26. Typed in Online Photo Backup into Windows Live Help, which wasn't useful. 27. Support person asked "Are you still in Mozilla Firefox?", "Um...no. I'm in Internet Explorer 7 right now". 28. Go to https://www.google.ca/?gws_rd=ssl . Type in "online photo backup" and click on the Windows Live OneCare link. 29. Click the Start Now button and that's all I can help you with. That was extremely lengthy that could have been avoided by configuring the telephone systems correctly. Also, they could have included the link to the Google page in the email or on the betas site or at least somewhere within the Windows Live OneCare thing. If you are contacting Microsoft for some support issues, please ensure that you are very patient and have lots of time on your hands.
  16. I corrected the problem by downloading Firefox manually and manually moving the files over to /usr/lib/firefox.Somehow that directory got deleted.I had to do it via the terminal because I need to sign in as root user to access /usr directories. Is there a faster way to move files, like the old xcopy command in MS-DOS?
  17. Ok I installed Ubuntu 7.04, upgraded to 7.10 when it prompted me but then the computer won't start Linux properly!!!I had to go into recovery mode (or whatever they call it) and I tried typing in some things and it worked!!! I think I used apt-get and dpkg or something like that.I don't know if I actually want to set up a server or not, I can always stay after school to work on stuff on the real server. But I have one small problem on Ubuntu: Firefox doesn't work!!! I click the icon, it says "Starting Firefox Web browser" and it goes away. In the task manager thing, it doesn't even start the process. How can I fix it?
  18. There are date and time functions here on dev.mysql.com, exact url is http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/.
  19. Ok, how come no one suggested month() or monthname() ? I just found out those two.
  20. Ok I am installing Ubuntu again on this computer. I will give Mandriva a try later on.As for the server, I would prefer it to be a GUI, I have little resources on that system as noted above and it isn't a live server anyways.
  21. Ok I have tried Linux before, it was ok, until something with the kernel screwed up and it left me with a command line interface that I didn't know what to do. I am looking for 2 different distributions of Linux here, my first one is for: (Currently running Windows XP SP2) A computer with 512 MB RAM Pentium 4 processor Internet Access GNOME or KDE desktop, doesn't matter Minimal command line work!!! Absolutely no command line work when installing. I have tried Ubuntu, it was easy enough. Anything easier than Ubuntu and I'll give it a try. My second choice is for: (Currently running Windows 98 SE) A computer with 64 MB RAM Celeron processor - speed is 384mHz No internet access CD drive doesn't work GNOME or KDE desktop I would like to run a server for development purposes if I can (for the 2nd choice), otherwise I will have to use the newer computer for the server. (Ignore that, I threw out the old computer and kept the hard drive.) As long as I can browse the Internet, block emails, access OpenOffice.org, print and not have to worry about the command line, I'm happy. Any suggestions here?
  22. I don't see a reason to take all the unnecessary steps to do this because with the Photoshop at school, you only need to drag a rectangle the fit your text in. Same with Microsoft Paint.
  23. So are you asking us to help translate the XOOPS system or what exactly are you asking for? I noticed that your topic title is Filesharing, what does that mean? You are certainly welcome to share your contributions to this forum, and it is awesome that you are contributing to an open-source project. Keep up the good work!
  24. For those of you who configured Internet Explorer to block certain settings/sites using Group Policy Editor/Windows SteadyState, Firefox can still access the Internet, overriding all you configured proxies if you have just blocked it in the browser. Here is something that will change all of that! We all know that Firefox, Opera or other alternative browsers should be used instead of Internet Explorer. For security, speed, usability, and many more reasons. But people in large networks (e.g. school boards) are reluctant to installing Firefox because they are scared that kids can override the settings and disable the proxies and stuff. They are familiar with Group Policy Editor with Internet Explorer because apparently it is easier because it is a Microsoft technology. Public Fox - time to show a more manageable Firefox to the world. Some of these certain options are disable-able: Options panel about:config panel Downloads Adding bookmarks History Add-ons Also, it includes a feature for URL blocking, either a whitelist or a blacklist. For people wanting the browser to visit certain sites, whitelist it. For people wanting to block certain sites (most people), blacklist it. It's that easy! A password is required to override block, so if people tried to access about:config, options, history, add a bookmark, download a file or access the extensions, a prompt appears and a password to override it is needed. Otherwise, the browser blocks access to that. Very easy, eh? I have found this useful to introduce to the school and I hope they will get Firefox soon. So see if it is useful to any networks that you work in!
  25. The dates are stored as YYYY-MM-DD which is a good thing I suppose. At least better than MMM DD, YYYY.Anyways, I am trying TavoxPeru's method of substr() because it looks simplest. I will test it out sometime today I hope and see if it works as intended. As for explode(), I don't really understand arrays and that kind of stuff, the PHP manual didn't help either. But I will use it if I must. LOL
