  1. Well because AJAX is just a SYSTEM not a language it presumably came about as soon as javascript had the ability to send and receive information via HTTP and POST and GET methods.Ive just started using it too and its extremely good, before the submission of a form would require the user being sent to a whole new page and then if there was anything missing or invalid i had to show them an error and take them back again, i know that couldve been solved with JS but i was too lazy for JS at the time. Now i just use AJAX to send the form variables and any errors or messages can be shown via redirection or using AJAX to assign the value of a DIV to the text that is echo'd by the PHP. Good times!I think it would be excellent if AJAX could be made simpler, maybe by an addition to the JS language of several in-built commands to establish conections and for better browser compatibility to ensure it works first time and all the time.
  2. You could always make a hidden textbox and fill it with the value of the ID you want, then send it along with the other data to the processor page?Im a little confused at what you want but i think thats right?
  3. the MAIL function does need an SMTP server to be active as thats how it works. T17 has this server so you can use MAIL without any setup needed on T17. this page described the function http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ The advantage to using MAIL comes from being able to automatically send emails such as n user registration or newsletters. I think there was a discussions about how to send mail without a mail server but youd have to search for that. It is a very useful function so use it wisely!
  4. Full story: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/lancashire/7008275.stm The basics are that a man managed to get a "blank firing firearm" onto a plane from spain to the UK and the only reason he was caught was because of a tip off! What the hell?! If an ordinary man can get a blank firing gun onto a plane into the UK, which is among the countries on high alert fr terrorism then what can a real terrorist do? As i understand it the only difference between a blank gun and a real gun is that blanks guns can only fire blanks as they aren't strong enough to actually fire a real bullet, other than that they are the same/similar to real guns. So if they didnt detect that gun they wouldnt have detected a real gun which means guns can be coming into and out of this country, and others, freely but not only that, a terrorist can easily carry onto a plane a weapon which can be used to bring the plane down or to hijack it! Really shows you the security in place...Ive only flown a few times but as i understand once you get off the plane at your destination there are no more security checks other than customs so its very likely that without the tip off the failure of the Spanish security and the lack of adequate incoming security in the UK wuld have meant another weapon on the streets perhaps. Bad times.
  5. I know online money making does work for some people, its just not for me, its different if you enjoy posting, like if i was given cash to post here on the trap then id easily accept that as i know i enjoy being around these forums and i do it even though im not being paid cash, getting paid would be a bonus.
  6. Just to be clear i was personally insulting you with the moron comment I just think its such a waste of time! all of that time for a few cents just seems too much to do! Even as a money supplement it seems too much work for so little reward! I think people that use online money making schemes would do better to design websites or logos, or offer other services on the internet or to friends and family, you can make much more that way!
  7. Thanks for that Jlhaslip! I always forget the doc types and i really should use them, i remember they played an important part in my last CSS related problem too Ill look into the margins and padding styles and floats, i thought i new enough CSS to get me through but perhaps not! Thanks for all the help!
  8. Okies, ive attached both files with this post. This is a real pain in the... that IE cant do something right for a change!Merge my posts if it seems more convenient, it just seemed easier to do it this way index.htm main.css
  9. Personally im opposed to these systems, firstly the cash you get is ridiculous! Living in the UK, if i could use this particular system i would get one penny for a post, if i walked the streets or searched my pockets i could easily come up with ten times that in a matter of a minute or two.The other thing i have against them is the fact it leads to morons ruining good forums! It just means people effectively spam with one liners and it doesnt build on the forum at all. Ah well theres my two cents, which is coincidentally what i would have earned for a good 5 minutes of my time!
  10. I did see this particular website but the thing that stopped me is this line: And i use ABSOLUTE positioning, but i tried it anyway and it didnt work, im not sure why, i views the source of that page and copied the CSS that related to the div "menu" as that is the "FIXED" one and i also saw some HTML code within comments that related to CSS so i copied that too and it didnt work. Im wondering if it has anything to do with the fact that im using an external CSS file and they are using the CSS within the HTML? I dont think it would make any difference. The Relevant CSS is below. The Div im trying to format is classed "submit", if you could shed any light on the problem it'd be great! div.submit {display: block; border-width: 3; border-style: Solid; border-color: blue; background-color: #55AAFF; width: 555; position: fixed; top: 35%; Left: 25%; padding: 5;}* html #submit {position:absolute;}body {border:0; height:100%; overflow-y:auto;} Im not massively experienced in CSS so im not sure what the hashes and asterix means either.
  11. Hi allI'm trying for the first time to use JS to modify styles and such and part of my design is to have a DIV appear in the middle of the browser's window, so to do this, and keep the DIV in the middle even while scrolling ive used the FIXED positioning style with CSS, now i develop in FF so as soon as i toggle to IE, version 6.x, i suddenly see that my DIV is just stuck at the top not where it should be and not FIXED either. After some research i find that FIXED doesnt work in IE less than version 7, now i could just upgrade to IE7 despite my reluctance but then the issue is, if i were to fully develop something like this for a real website, would *all* of my visitors, or at least 99%, be using IE7 or FF or Netscape, which should then be able to view the DIV correctly?Im thinking no... so thats why i want a fix for this issue, ive looked on the web and seen a few including using JS to move the DIV in relation to the scrolling thats going on, but thats really jerky and i think its more complicated. Ive also seen a CSS fix for it too, but again it seems a little complicated and the thing is the solution involves "tricking" IE into using ABSOLUTE instead of FIXED to get the same effect which then renders ABSOLUTE useless for anything other then emulating the FIXED effects, and that isnt very desirable. Are there any other solutions? I dont mind upgrading to IE7 if i have to but then im worried that my users wont have IE7 or FF or NS which are able to display it correctly.... Why cant everyone just abandon IE?!
  12. Humm.. i agree with not having IE7 but i would recommend updating to SP2 as that might help the problem. Thats all i can really suggest but someone else might have more info. Try checking the net for the symptoms and a solution, and maybe a full virus scan just incase
  13. If adults need privacy, why dont children? I know it would help in kidnappings but as a child would you want your parents knowing where you were all the time? Of course you wouldnt! and that in my eyes is an invasion of privacy that will eventually lead to invasion of privacy to adults too. The only way this type of device culd be effective and morally correct would be to have it easily removable by the trackee, as said jewlery is often stolen so maybe a small but powerful clip that can be attached inside pockets or on socks or shoes. Many a thing, such as oil... their hatred or every government but their own... probably anger that they, the american government, armed many of the "terrorist" they are now fighting... anyway.. back on topic...The point is, as already said, an invasion of privacy doesnt lead to security, in my eyes it would lead to insecurity and hatred f the "system" leading to more crime and eventual anarchy. Here in the UK at least they do have tracking via a "tag" which is like a band around the ankle with a transmitter inside, usually used to ensure that criminals adhere to curfews or to prove or disprove their involvement in any crimes by their location. Thing is these bands are made or plastic or rubber for comfort and so by heating them gently they can be stretched over the foot and stuck on a dog or something to give the illusion of them still being on the criminal, the reason they met them is because cutting them sets of an alarm signal. The point is any tracking measure can be disabled by any number of methods and it would give enough time to commit a crime without being tracked that would greatly enhance their chances f not being found guilty. I still think its a good idea to track those on parole as only the determined are going to bother going to far lengths to remove the tag for a few days.
  14. If this question means that because everyone is "tagged" then so will extremists and thus we would know exactly what when and where they are planning, that just wouldnt work. If youre an extremist willing to kill yourself then youd be willing to take out your eye, or hand, or other chip cntaining area of your body, or to blast it with an EMP or otherwise disable it. The chips would only prevent or solve the more minor offences and not mass terrorism, nothing will stop terrorism except the end of mankind. On a less philosophical note i think a better solution would be to have "chipped" jewellery like rings, earrings, bracelets etc... that are just safety accessories, that way your child or whoever could wear one on a night out etc.. so if they were abducted or anything they could be tracked and when they get home or when they want privacy they just turn it off or take it off. Easy!
  15. I could do, i might do that if i make some more userbars, that way i can add a new dimension each time and get better and better, i didnt think of that at the time. Nope, just followed the tutorial i said about, changing the colours and the image to use to make my own graphic with their instructions
  16. Ideally you should ask Opaque who is the admin around here as he manages the T17 servers i think. Just give him a PM with a link to this topic or ask him via PM. In the meantime ive taken a quick look very quick in fact, and it mentions Java, Tomcat and MYSQL being needed. As far as i know these are available with Xisto, good times! I would suggest taking a look at Xisto - Web Hosting.com as they offer paid hosting with many features and guarantees for a very low price, i think around $3-$4 a month so if youre in the uk its around Ł2 a month! As i said though its best to PM Opaque as he manages the servers and so knows a lot more than most about the services offered and he might even be able to install features specifically for you if thats needed. Here is the link to his profile where you can find the PM button: http://forums.xisto.com/user/1-opaque/ Another mod or admin might also be able to help so sit tight!
  17. Check the link in my first post and follow the tutorial there, you can change the gradient colours and the image you use to anything you want. And for the diagonal lines check the link on that page.
  18. PHP Designer 2OO7 and all versions of this editor have the personal version which is free for non-commercial use and thats what i use at the moment, if i were to use it for commercial use then i probably would buy the full version as its a nice peice of software that respects the fact not everyone can buy software all the time.Ill have to look at geany though, sounds similar but maybe better than PHP dev.
  19. The title i meant was the "content title" part. That way the background for the top of the table or DIV could be a small tiled image to reduce loading time and the text for the content title and news text could be an image with a transparent background, that way i have more flexibility methinks.
  20. I might use it myself as i want to offer a site similar to hotscripts or something, thats why itried to make it look techy I like the idea for the drop down type menu, that would be very good if each of the link titles were like categories eg "Downloads" then with sub-selections that appear on hover. And the news idea is good too, it would allow the webmaster, or me, to add more content than the confines of a static box would usually allow like having multiple news updates etc. AS for adding to the top banner, im not so sure, The design is heavily based on a tutorial i found and the end result of the tutorial was similar to my result but i didnt actually follow the tutorial. The idea, for me at least, was to create something simple and hopefully give a glass or water style banner, hence the reflection, if you want to use the banner and add to it then feel free! I never thought of that, though i could use the background of the cell/area set to be the blue with stripes and then have the text as a transparent image over the top or something, shouldn't be too bad on loading times. When i can be bothered ill have to save the individual elements and code the website, see how it works.
  21. Hi all, the title says it all really, im looking for some feedback on my first decent design of a website, its in image form below I like most of it, im not entirely sure about the greys though, i think they could be lighter but i think it looks reasonable. The idea is to have that layout centred with white edges for users with wider screens. What do you think? Constructive criticism is welcome EDIT: Apologies for the double post
  22. I dont think magnetism affects CD's as theyre optical disks and burned with lasers and such not using a magnetic method like floppy disks. My guess is one of two things, either the device they used to read them with was incompatible, very unlikely. Or the disks were damaged by things like moisture and/or bacteria etc that could have changed the etchings which were recorded on the disk in a similar way to scratching them.
  23. Thanks! For my first few userbars i think theyre pretty good too! And i learned how to make scan lines in the GIMP, the link is in the Tutorial i linked.
  24. Hey! Todays been a boring day so I decided to search for some GIMP tutorial and found this one: Making a userbar with the GIMP so I followed it but changed the colours etc and got these three userbars: Matrix Image Link PHP Image Link T17 Image Link My least favourite is the PHP one as i dont like the colours or the left hand text but i couldnt find a nice php logo image to use. My favourite.. im not sure, i like the colours of both the other two, not s sure about the neo render in the matrix one though.. maybe needs to be tinted a little green and the T17 one i made the text myself and as a first attempt at a userbar i think they all came out rather well. Let me know what you think! EDIT: Added direct links, images working fine
  25. I dont believe it at all because there are over one million SPECIES of insects in the world and ONE colony of ants has said to have had 486,000,000 ants in interconnected nestsNow if every species of insect has only 1OOO insects in it, if we add that number to the number of ants in this one colony we get 100,486,000,000 insects in the world. If the oceans in this world can support that many 2O foot long whales i will die in amazement! And lets not forget those numbers are based on adding ONE colony of ants to the equivalent of 1OOO of every species of insect so who knows how many insects there really are? Billions more i expect!
