What's The Best Way To Clean An Lcd Screen?
The Simpleton1405241582 replied to The Simpleton1405241582's topic in Software
Hmm I'll try using some damp to clean it. I've read about those fancy LCD wipes that are supposedly wonderful for cleaning LCDs but thankfully they aren't available in my town. I'll try out the method you suggested and see if my netbook screen can withstand it -

Thanks for the suggestion 8ennett - I've taken a look at the thread you mentioned, and while I find the dinosaur concept hilarious, I can't really comment on it entirely because to start off with, I'm not a Christian and hence don't know much about the bible, and even if I were to merely comment on what others said I can't say much about the topic. So it would simply interrupt the good flow of comments that's going on in there.... -
Hmm that's right as well...trusting a private company with our private files isn't such a good idea, even if that company is Microsoft or even Google. Besides the threat of security, it would be too stressful to depend on the internet for every small task that one wishes to perform on the computer. For people with unlimited bandwidth it would make no difference, but the time consumption is simply too large.

What's The Best Way To Clean An Lcd Screen?
The Simpleton1405241582 replied to The Simpleton1405241582's topic in Software
Wetness doesn't damage it? The stains are bang in the middle of the screen and although they don't affect the visibility during work, they do present an ugly picture when the screen is switched off. I was under the assumption that wetness isn't good for an LCD. -
Hmm looks like I guessed right about the PS2/3 emulator - it's not going to happen perfectly any soon! I remember reading somewhere that there is a good xbox emulator available for Windows and it runs because they share similar architecture? I'm not sure whether I got that right but it was something like that, and that article said the possibility of successfully emulating xbox and xbox360 games on windows was more than that of the PS series. I wonder how far that is true...

wow it's a wonder you got the time to make over a hundred posts here! You seem just too busy A computer without internet - I used to have one of those some years ago, before dial-up and later broadband came and spoiled the party! Ah, 8ennett has already commented well enough on your words; I'll add a few more. The chances of making money are slim in the open source community but that doesn't mean it's all they do. Most open source programmers have regular jobs as well and if their work is well appreciated, the community doesn't shy away from making generous donations. (Take Mozilla Firefox, which is an open source project and is yet raking in good money) As for the apps/programs, there's no way Windows can beat what Linux has to offer. The only problem is that the Windows community has a much wider reach and better marketing, which is why Windows' (and even Mac's) programs get popular and famous easily. The linux community's problem is that there is simply too much variety, which confuses new users. Since all the programs are new to them, they don't know which one to choose and end up ditching the community and go to Windows. There are a lot of ways in which one could prove how Linux is better than Windows, but writing all that in this thread would mean writing against the topic, which I've already done a lot On the fastest PC available today, Ubuntu Linux 10.04 claims to boot in less than ten seconds. Can Windows 7 claim that? No. Ubuntu shuts down even faster. In Windows the user has to do some tweaking to reduce the shut down time. I guess this one example is enough for this situation to prove how Linux scores over Windows.

I can be a chatterbox when I feel like it, and since I'm also a bit of a technical person, I sure hope to get into those debates you mentioned I intended to join Xisto before T17 but I guess I chose the easier way out. Anyway it's not too late. -
You make a really good point with your reply. Maybe file-hosting sites have always been there for illegal downloads, cleverly escaping the law with their terms of usage policy. But when the first such sites came out, was there such a wide spread of warez? As you mentioned, Napster was the first big example of illegal file sharing, but it wasn't a file-hosting site in the true sense. Probably the file-hosting sites had a decent idea but quickly changed their tactics once they saw scope for making some quick money through selling premium accounts and indirectly encouraging the spread of illegal material. The scenario you mention is interesting and makes a lot of sense. However, sometimes files need to be held longer and the user may want to access those files quickly, without having to wait endless seconds to download it or a premium account to download it faster. Very few sites maintain this concept of quick access with minimum obstacles. Cloud computing has really changed the story now, and I'm glad it's gaining popularity by the day. This was how file-hosting was supposed to be. Cloud computing still needs to evolve in terms of sharing with people, but I guess doing that would bring us back to square one again. Oh well....

Pacman On Google Homepage
The Simpleton1405241582 replied to 8ennett's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Playing it for a day or two on the google home page was fun, but trying to play it again through google isn't much of a 'fun' idea....I'd rather play it in full-screen whenever I want. Still, google brought back some memories and I re-discovered pacman after a long time -
I have two LCDs in my home - one is my LCD tv and another is for my netbook. Both of them are over a month old and have started getting some stains over them. The TV is not so bad - a dry cloth manages to get off the dust and other simple stuff. The real problem is with my netbook's screen. It's a tiny thing (10.1 inches) and I dunno how I managed to get so many stains on it in such a short time. Anyway, the cloth gets rid of the dust but there are two-three sizable stains that refuse to leave. I haven't rubbed it too hard and haven't used water, in fear of ruining it forever. So, is there any solution to get rid of these stains without spoiling the screen itself?

Using a PC for something other than surfing the net?! Now that's a challenge! If there was a reason, the concept of "netbooks" wouldn't come into play

Is It Worth It To Get Gmail ? Is Gmail Good?
The Simpleton1405241582 replied to wazzupster0204's topic in Search Engines
Yeah the "Basic HTML" option does speed things up a bit, but it's still slow when compared to other mail service providers like Yahoo. By slow connections I'm talking about GPRS or dial-up. On these, GMail does seem to slow down a bit, but one has to admit that the features on offer are worth the wait -

Thanks for the welcome - rest assured that I've had my experience with -ve CENTs and have managed to stay away from them for quite some time at T17/KS. I just hope you didn't take my "I've spammed the forums over there" dialogue too seriously -
The original concept of hosting and sharing files is long gone. Now all of the file-hosting sites concentrate on selling premium accounts and on download speeds, because file hosting now translates to hosting illegal content. The sites cleverly hide behind well-written usage policies, and oh yes, they do delete the content if someone points it out, but the tactics used by the site to attract more people to upload and download illegal content are clear. File-hosting in its true sense is really gone. If I had to send an important file which was of a large size, would I send it through a site like Rapidshare which makes people wait for a while before getting the file? And the concept of earning money through file-hosting....now that encourages the spread of illegal content all over the net. So I don't think there is an honest file-hosting site out there. Not one.

Is It Worth It To Get Gmail ? Is Gmail Good?
The Simpleton1405241582 replied to wazzupster0204's topic in Search Engines
Gmail used to have loading problems earlier and it still does if I use a slower connection. The only complain I have about Gmail is that its too sneaky. Once you log in to gmail you are logged in to Google as well and anything you search in google gets recorded under your account, as if its some kind of permanent record. Unless you click 'sign out' or delete cookies, your searches continue will be recorded. This comes under storing private information and GOK what google can do with this information. This is the only scary thing about Gmail. Otherwise it is quite a good service and keeps out spam better than the others -
I definitely agree that Windows 7 is much better than Vista in many aspects. Not many people complain about 7 regarding the booting time. I guess after seeing what Linux offers, any speed by Windows just seems too slow! It does have to load quite a lot of things which Linux doesn't do (or need).

Need For Speed Games pre-underground
The Simpleton1405241582 replied to The Bob's topic in Computer Gaming
The graphics problem is not just in the case of NFS. Nowadays almost every PC game requires the players to have a good graphics card without which they cannot play the game at all. On my PC only games which were released before 2006 work - the rest demand a graphics card! So game developers everywhere just assume that gamers will upgrade their systems as and when required. In any case, the graphics appeal in the games needs to be kept up so these requirements can't be helped. If gamers want good graphics they have to upgrade their system or else be satisfied with the old games because there is no other option (other than getting a console). So NFS doesn't have to concentrate just on graphics. The thrill is somehow missing in the new games. Or, maybe we've seen it all. Gamers are always looking for new content and that's the reason graphics can't make a best-selling game always! -
Crysis Review The Good, the Bad, and the WTF
The Simpleton1405241582 replied to Herbert1405241469's topic in Computer Gaming
I've heard a lot of people talk about how resource-hungry Crysis is. Has anyone actually played the game in their PC with maximum graphics and all details turned on? A technology magazine I read regularly publishes reviews for custom-built PCs and no matter how 'powerful' the specs they choose are, they always say the graphics they use to play Crysis are either moderate or average or something like that. Is it really that intense a game?!! That said, I've seen the gameplay videos on youtube and it looks really cool. I hope to play it some day if I manage to get a PC like that! -
Need For Speed Games pre-underground
The Simpleton1405241582 replied to The Bob's topic in Computer Gaming
The best NFS game I played so far was Hot Pursuit 2. After that the rest of the games somehow didn't feel so thrilling as before. And I think the series is slowly losing its popularity. They need a good comeback game soon. In the worst case that they don't come up with a good game soon, the series will anyway be remembered for being the best racing game series ever! -
Was there a successful emulator built for even the PS2? I remember having a good emulator for PS1 and could play games like Tekken 3 comfortably (although with minor issues). I read somewhere that emulators for the PS2 and PS3 are hard to come by and development in this field is going on slowly? Even if it did work, would it be fun playing in front of the PC monitor than in front of the TV??

That's a neat idea for a few mails but for people who want to backup their entire inbox, it would be too much of a job to print so many mails. In such cases Thunderbird seems best and convenient, although it does take some time for people with hundreds (or even thousands) of mails to backup their entire inbox.

After waiting for ten years, I was finally able to buy a playstation 2 recently. That might seem funny to quite a lot of people as it is now an outdated console, but right now the PS3 doesn't fit into my budget, nor do the PS3 games. So anyway the first game I bought for the PS2 was the epic God of War. I finished it in 10 hours (on Normal Mode) and was left speechless by the experience. I heard that God of War 2 is even better than the first game so I'm waiting to get that soon, but on another note, I heard that GOW3 is available only for the PS3. So has anyone here played that game? Could you tell me how it was compared to the previous games? I tried to search for a thread that might exist on this topic but the search engine wouldn't accept any words less than four characters and 'God of War' doesn't have any four-letter words

Hi everyone - I registered over here way back in November 2009 but never made a post until today. The reason's simple - I was content with posting over at Xisto forums (now Xisto of course!) and I've spammed the forums over there with over a thousand posts. So why am I here now? I'm a greedy and selfish fellow, that's why! The myCENTs system over there is being upgraded which means no updates for a while, and I remembered just now that Xisto's part of the family too, so I thought Why not torment the members over here for a few days? Since there's been no forum upgrade here I'm guessing (and hoping) that the myCENT system is still alive and working. If it does I'm surely going to spend some time here along with KS, so please bear with me for a few days

I use Ubuntu 9.10 on my 8-year old PC with 512MB RAM and it boots up in about fifty seconds. Fifty seconds and I'm ready to play. I heard that the version 10.04 boots much faster, but my old system isn't supporting that one so for now I'm content with this. I have Windows 7 on dual boot and it takes, well....after three minutes I stopped counting! I guess it's so slow due to my old system, but it could have been much better if only the startup programs weren't so heavy.
