  1. I've been getting this bug quite a few times as well on Firefox (Linux), but it seems to be happening randomly.I guess the real reason for why this happens hasn't been figured out yet, which is why nothing has been done about it...yet! However, it happens only a few times so I think it shouldn't be affecting a lot of users. Still, it is undeniable that this happens only on Xisto, so the problem is definitely within the forum software, buried somewhere deep within!
  2. There hasn't been any official word on such an exploit present in the Firefox upgrade, has there? The windows version of Firefox is bound to have a few problems now and then because, well....it runs on Windows! I haven't had any problems so far with the Linux version of Firefox and it has never given me a crash or anything else weird. That is why I stick to using Linux for Internet.
  3. Good to know. I'm assuming that your system configuration is pretty decent and on such systems Ubuntu will definitely work like a charm. Glad to know that you're enjoying the new operating system. Any quick reviews other than on Empathy? Do you find any improvement in terms of performance compared to the previous version?
  4. You didn't tell us whether or not you applied to Google! If you sent your resume and got this mail then there's a good chance it's a fake, because Google doesn't send executables. And if you didn't apply and still got this mail, then it's definitely a fake because Google doesn't give out jobs to random people! (no offense) It's very easy to fake the destination address and this is a classic example of how such a thing can be done easily.
  5. I should have made myself clearer when I said it won't "work" on systems with less than 1GB RAM. You can install Ubuntu 10.10 on a system with even 256MB RAM, but it would be dreadfully slow and unresponsive. At least that's what I experienced when I installed it on two systems with a 2.3 GHz processor and 512 MB RAM. Each task takes a lot of time to complete and watching videos is almost out of the picture! On a slower processor (Intel Atom) and 1GB RAM however, I found 10.04 (the previous version) ran very fast, booting up within 15 seconds, and functioning at full speed. Even now, I tried running 10.10 through the Live CD on my old system, and after booting up completely, it was very, very slow to do any task and I had to accept the fact that it just wouldn't work well enough! That's true; it will run on those PCs, but it won't be a smooth performance at all. It would be a nasty experience and new users would actually get irritated if they were trying to run it on a slower PC! Actually, new users are safe, because most people who buy computers these days get a minimum of 1GB RAM anyway, so it wouldn't make any difference to them and they would be able to enjoy Ubuntu. It is the old users who haven't upgraded their systems who face this problem.
  6. Wow so far no one has given their opinion on the original topic of the thread, i.e., about their favourite Youtube videos, but the discussion that has been going on is interesting as well. However, I'd like to reply to what the topic asked for. The average user on Youtube watches eight hours of video per week, but I watch just around 3 hours of video, and that is usually some kind of tutorial, regarding Photoshop or some other software like Joomla, , Mambo, etc. There are a lot of channels available which teach you how to use these software easily, and I've learned quite fast, which is why I find these videos useful. There's no particular video that I can link to, but the results that appear on the first page are usually of very good quality. So if anyone is looking to use Youtube as a medium to learn something, then it's a very good idea.
  7. So far there haven't been any issues with 10.10, and actually the major change in it is that they've fixed a lot of bugs that were present in Lucid. There might not be many changes in the appearance or the features, but the core has been updated and it is much better than Lucid. It's a shame that Ubuntu will no longer work on systems with less than 1GB RAM Lucid never worked on my old PC with 512MB RAM and Maverick is no different. If you've got 1GB RAM or more, then you can surely have a good time with this latest distro
  8. It's a good idea to upgrade to Windows 7, but only if there is adequate hardware to support it. Otherwise it may be a bit sluggish and may not give the desired performance. That is why there are a lot of XP users who still feel that Windows 7 also hogs their system resources like Vista does, and then they say that Windows 7 is no good at all!
  9. The reason why Google is number 1 is really simple - they never get distracted. While other search engines like Yahoo and MSN/Bing have established their web portals and integrated their search engines within their respective portals, Google held on to its search engine and didn't create portals like the others did! Helping people find what they need is the top priority for Google and all its other activities are hidden deep within, without allowing the search engine to be disturbed in any way. That is why they are number one and will continue to be so for a very long time!
  10. DNS poisoning? I've heard of that somewhere. But I haven't heard of Youtube being inaccessible for 5-10 minutes before. It might be a temporary problem because in most cases whenever a site is blocked/not accessible, the problem gets solved within a few days. In any case, asking your ISP might help, and you could try using a VPN to check if it's affecting only your IP.
  11. There's no real problem with the issue that the OP mentioned, but the only thing that bothers some people is that due to the suggestions provided, they may get distracted and search for something else than what they were originally searching for. A lot of people easily get distracted by the various suggestions that Google gives and they may go after something else that is totally unrelated to their original search! Google can't be blamed entirely for this. It is just a feature that is extremely useful in a lot of cases and this distraction occurs only in a few instances.
  12. I use this method myself and so far from 5 articles I have got around 20 clicks on my link. It is a slow process, to be honest, and unless you have a really large number of articles in the article directory, you will not get as many clicks on your link as you expect in the first place. The rest of the methods that you have mentioned are good and they work well, with the exception of paid back-links, which can go wrong if you get too many backlinks in a short period of time. Search Engines like sites which have a lot of backlinks, but at the same time they do not like it if a single site gets a lot of backlinks in a very short amount of time. This leads to suspicion and it may affect your rankings as well. Some people argue about how true this is, but I've seen it happen once! So while buying backlinks don't get too enthusiastic and save your money by purchasing small amount of backlinks at regular intervals.
  13. We don't have such a thing over here at Xisto Just keep your account alive and stick to the rules and you'll be fine without having to bother about such things at all.
  14. You were on Linux? Then you needn't have bothered about it at all! Even if you had XP on another partition, there's no way any virus could affect XP through Linux! These scareware sites are mainly designed to trap new users to the Internet who are cautious about their every move. It's alright, I guess. You get to learn about how the evil minds work now Just have a laugh and forget about all this.
  15. This is the work of software called as Scareware. I hope you didn't fall in the trap and click on that "Start Protection" button? I really hope you didn't! Scareware is a black-hat technique to sell products which are usually harmful to the user than useful. This is a classic example of scareware - it scares you by giving you the impression that your computer is filled with thousands of trojans and viruses, and unless you do something about it immediately, all your data would be lost! Some people get scared about losing their data that they immediately fall into the trap and believe the scareware. They try to "start protecting" their computers but they are usually asked to purchase a product, sometimes titled as Anti-virus 2010 or something similar. Then your credit-card or other payment information is taken, and your computer is then infested with a software which is nothing but a gateway to trojans. Consider this regarding the above threat: -->How did Windows Explorer appear in your browser?! It's just a clever script which resembles your "My Computer" window. -->How did it scan your entire computer within seconds? An average computer scan lasts for at least a minute. --> Scan results appear in a separate Window, and not just beneath the drives in your computer! This page is screaming "FAKE" all along. Just don't fall in such traps. Close such tabs and scan your computer using a real anti-virus program to make sure that the malicious site didn't install anything on your drives.
  16. Yes, I've seen a few websites and read a couple of ebooks which teach newbies how to make money instantly using Blackhat techniques. What they probably don't know is that things are changing now and all the blackhats are getting their accounts suspended. What you've said is true, but it isn't a good idea to encourage blackhat techniques just to earn some money. I'm looking for a clean strategy to get genuine traffic to my site. I tried a splash widget just now using CPAlead. It appears only to people in the US and to the rest the site appears as usual, i.e., they don't get blocked. This seems to be a useful feature and I hope to do something based on this. Ideas are welcome.
  17. September 1, 2010 was the release date of the Apple iPod Nano's sixth generation device. In my country the release date is on the 20th, and I have already seen a few people getting excited about it. Has anyone over here already bought and used it? The iPod craze might have slowed down a bit after the iPhone came out, but I'm sure there are still a lot of fans out there who want to get their fans on every new Apple product? This sixth generation iPod Nano is much smaller than the previous releases and features multi-touch, reminiscent of the the iPod Touch in a way. I'm looking forward to getting this pretty device soon so if someone could provide a quick review that would be great!
  18. Due to my stupidity, I lost my Adsense account and now there's almost no hope of getting it back. So I'm looking at other options to monetize my website. I've been looking at CPA programs lately and they seem to be very interesting (although very intrusive to visitors). Does CPA actually earn more than Adsense and similar programs? CPALead.com seems to be the top name among CPA websites. I have a content site on which I'm planning to put a gateway soon. I think it's beneficial mostly to US citizens, and since most of my traffic is non-US, I think it may take some time for me to drive US traffic to my site. So can you please give me some hints and tips about using CPA to monetize my site? I'm not going to make the same mistake I did with Adsense, so I'm prepared to wait for results. Any hints/suggestions would be deeply appreciated.
  19. That's a good idea. It's a cool feature of most Linux distributions that the users can try it out without installing it at all. Their hard disk can be safe and yet they can manage to try out all the features of the distro and when they're satisfied, they can install it and enjoy the complete experience.
  20. The simple answer to that would be - from the source-code! but what I want to know is how long would it take for a person to create their own Firefox derivative. Recently there was some talk about the browser Epic which was just another Firefox derivative with a few bells and whistles attached. Of course they did a lot of hard work developing the new browser, but it wasn't exactly innovative to someone who knew what it was made of actually! So my question is, how long does it take to create such a browser and how hard is it?
  21. Wow, that's a neat feature. However, someone who's not familiar with such scripts could easily think that someone from Google is actually reading as they type their mails
  22. I know Solaris and OpenSolaris are two different operating systems, and I also know that OpenSolaris is the free one. Well there wasn't any sub-forum for OpenSolaris so I decided to put it in here. Solaris continues to live on, but OpenSolaris has been discontinued, because Oracle (which took over Sun in Jan 2010) is not interested in developing the open-source OS anymore. It may not have been the most popular free OS out there, but it was good to see a full-fledged OS from the stables of Sun Microsystems. Now it is dead, but it will continue to live on in another form, by the name of Illumos, which is being developed by a team of core Solaris developers. The Illumos project is still in the initial stages and it may take some time to get fully developed, and there's nothing in the download page of it's official website (http://wiki.illumos.org/display/illumos/illumos+Home) but in time this derivative of OpenSolaris will be out for the public. So has anyone of you had a good experience with OpenSolaris so far? Are you saddened by the fact that it won't exist in its original form anymore?
  23. I've been using Priority Inbox for a few days and it's very well-trained by now! It sorts the mail I want to see immediately and pushes all the rest of the mail down the page. I receive around 20 emails per day so it's not a huge number, but within these 20 emails the sorting is done very neatly. It's a good thing if everyone starts using Priority Inbox so that Google gets encouraged to add new features to it And about the debate of Hotmail, the less we talk about it, the better!
  24. There have been multiple counter-projects and I'm registered for the Ubuntu counter project. Can't exactly remember what's my number (I have it in a sig image on another forum) but that runs into more than five digits It's a good way to promote Linux but I think the better way would be to actually contribute to the community in some way or encourage others to use Linux as far as possible.
  25. Commercial encyclopedias are definitely more reliable and trustworthy, but they can never match the range of content that Wikipedia provides. What's more, they touch only those topics which they deem important to them, and not to the public. For example, there's a commercial encyclopedia (dunno if its Britannica or something else) which doesn't have a mention of Wikipedia in its list of articles. They think talking about Wikipedia is a waste of time and thus they have not put in an article about it! On the other hand, Wikipedia has detailed articles about all the major and minor encyclopedias and these are regularly updated as well. If this is the situation when its a non-paying site, then I think there's no real need to start offering payments, as its already very good. If the editors at wikipedia feel they could do with better contributions, then sure they could implement a payment system. That is a bit doubtful though, unless they get a lot of private funding or/and donations, as they don't make a lot of money from the site (no ads!!!)
