  1. Is there anything wrong with them updating your computer without your knowledge? I mean, it's not like they're taking your credit card numbers and spending your money, eating your food, sleeping in your bed, stealing your mp3s, or anything like that. They're updating the computer so that your system is more secure. That's an interesting concept of just buying a license to run your computer with their Operating System. I would say that if you really want to go with a company who cares about you, get a Mac. The only problem is that it can cost more. Get a version of linux if you want something you have a great amount of control over. In the case of gmail and yahoo, nothing comes for free, so suck it up or go find another provider.
  2. Depending on whose side you are on, some people would view this MediaDefender company as a hero and others would view them as the villain. But I do have to admit that entrapment is wrong (obviously). I guess what MediaDefender's website could trap people for doing is violating the terms of use of their video uploading website, by saying that unless you own the rights to distribute the material that you are uploading, you are illegally sharing this material... something like that... Which I guess wouldn't be entrapment, because people sign or agree to the terms of use before using the website, and they are responsible for their own trouble that they get into.I know that this whole piracy thing is a big issue though, and while I like getting stuff free, imagine how inventors feel when they aren't given their dues when they make something. =) Just thought I'd give you all something to think about... - Trinifawk
  3. I don't know if this qualifies as a 'website' or not, but some people's AOL and Myspace pages are just crazy with all sorts of weirdo fonts and links and confusion going on. Especially with the AOL homeplace or whatever you call it, you see alot of that happening. I like it because it would be a friend's attempt at trying to make a website or web page for the first time, and I usually just go to see how it looks or to read whatever is on there out of curiousity to learn more about the friend. I prefer sites with good navigation though, and no pop-ups or tons of advertisements on them. This keeps me from banging my head on my desk in frustrtaion at viewing a website.
  4. You can use Thunderbird and have all of your RSS feeds go into that program. You can also set up your email account and have stuff go in there as well. If you're on the internet pretty much all the time with a reliable connection, then Thunderbird would be my recommendation. Plus, you can't beat the price, right? It's freeeeeeeeeeeeee!Hope that helps.
  5. Hey everyone. Just thought that I'd share on my little craze that's going on right now. It's with being environmentally friendly as much as I can. I recently bought a Nalgene bottle, which I can refill, instead of buying 32 packs of water bottles twice a month. That's a lot of plastic that I'm saving. I just get a water filter (i have a brita pitcher), and I'm good to go. Hey, it's one step closer to me saving the environment. These bottles are very durable, because they are made from high quality plastic, and they can withstand very hot or cold temperatures. The caps are very hard to lose, since they are attached, and these things are supposed to last for years. Where can you find these? You can check your local sports shop in the camping/hiking/water bottle section, or go to nalgene-outdoor.com and get one shipped to you for free. That's usually the best bet. Well, I thought I'd share with you. I hope that this whole eco-friendly craze of mine doesn't go away. I plan on getting a really good road bike soon as I get some money and do my part to consume less gas. Cheers!
  6. How did you guys find this website? It's pretty interesting the way that people find things on the internet. I was looking around at paid hosting, and one day I just managed to google up this website. It's been a freebie dream come true so far.
  7. That's great to know. It's kind of sad sometimes that I can't post enough in the forums to keep my account active. But I love how Xisto doesn't really give too many problems at all with it. You just make back whatever you're in deficit, and have I believe enough points to count for 3 days and you're back on track. I'm glad to have designed my website using this free company's services, and I hope to continue my run of great experiences using Xisto. Just make sure and keep posting in the forums though. That's what got me temporarily suspended, and I'm trying to make sure that it doesn't happen again. Cheers!
  8. Well, it seems like some illegal downloading is in store. If you go on one of those p2p websites and download the Windows XP, then chances are you will be downloading a non-genuine version of windows. I'm not sure if you will be able to install updates on that, because one of the updates will be the windows genuine advantage program, which will end up putting a pop-up on your screen that says your version of Windows is fake and that you should get a genuine one. That's always one option that you can use. It's up to your conscience to decide whether or not it's the morally sound thing to do. Or you can just wait to hear back from M$. That's always a good bet.
  9. Astahost provides a great service at a very good price (free). The only thing about it is that you have to keep on top of your posts. It's easy to forget that you're 'paying' for this free service by making valuable or meaningful contributions on the forums. But I suppose that most people who want free hosting don't really count on making money from their websites, or their sites are for experimental or educational/hobby purposes only. I have found that alot of questions that you have can be answered by searching the forums. The first few days after I became hosted, I didn't understand a bunch of stuff, but the little search feature on the top makes it easy to get solutions without making a new topic. One thing about these forums is that it seems like a lot of people spam (see above) to raise their hosting credits. Xisto tries to limit these spammers by denying them accounts and also moderating what gets posted. Also, if you don't post alot, then your credits aren't going to get up by much. Overall, it's a great service, easy to use, and the rules are pretty straightforward.
  10. I think that powershots are great, but the lighting has to be just right for the pictures to look fine. I prefer Nikon coolpix cameras... but I guess that people go on and on about which camera they prefer. I would say that an SLR camera would be the best bet for motion shots.
  11. I love portable apps. The only thing that I don't like is that the usb drive shows up as portableapps instead of just a regular drive. But that's okay I guess. No biggie. I most commonly use GIMP, Firefox, Openoffice, and utorrent (not sure if utorrent is in the suite, but i use it on my thumb drive). Does anyone know if this would get me around my school's 'websense' restrictions? I don't want to try it and get flagged.
  12. This is funny. IF you all read the person's first post, it was made a long, long time ago. This topic has resurrected from the dead! Nevertheless, I would recommend a sandisk sansa. Very good player with great features.
  13. I'm not really boasting. I'm just wondering if anyone has any suggestions about upgrades to make to mine. Pentium 4 2.4 ghz480 Mb RAM80 ghz hard drivedvd-cdrw drivefirewire portfloppy disk driveThis computer is custom built and is almost 5 years old. Time for a new one. Any suggestions?
  14. So you recommend netscape? I haven't had that browser on my computer in a very long time. I'm tempted to try it out just to see if what you're saying is right. I'm leaning more toward making Opera my first choice and Firefox my second choice because of the frequent crashing of the firefox browser. But Firefox is so customizable that it's hard to make the switch. Internet explorer is just too vulnerable to attack. And then if you have a so-called illegal version of Windows on your computer, you can't download the new IE anyways. Even though that version of Windows came with my computer. So it's firefox all the way for now. But I"ll check out the Netscape
  15. There's also Camino web browser. It works pretty well. Maybe you can just get the updates for firefox and use firefox when it becomes more stable. I think that Safari is okay too. There's always the option of installing M$ Internet Explorer on your mac, but I wouldn't want to recommend that.
  16. I gave up! I got up to level 5 and decided to call it quits because it just wasn't worth the brainwork for me. I was never really good at puzzles. One hint for you. You can press the back button on your browser and retry the questions when you get them wrong. That's how I got to level 5. I don't know why you decided to post all the questions there for everyone to see. That takes some of the fun out of the game. But thanks anyway for the post. - TRinifawk
  17. I would have to say that the weirdest thing that I've seen was chocolate rain by Tay Zonday. That guy's music just gives me the chills. If you don't know what I"m talking about (I"m pretty sure you must know what I'm talking about since you're on the internet), check out youtube.com and search for chocolate rain. It was featured there a little while back and the guy has become a big star now.
  18. Google has been expanding so much recently, that it's getting crazy. I wonder when they'll start charging for their services? Bobby Johnson? That's funny. But props to google never the less. Their empire will continue to grow because of the convenience of their services.
  19. I love roller coasters. The first one I ever went on was at Coney Island in New York, and I was scared stiff (the roller coaster track was wooden and old and creaky). I plan on visiting Canada some time in 2008. If construction is done according to schedule, then I might pay a visit to that one. The roller coaster seems to be orange and blue- Florida Gator colours! Go Gators! heh heh Second thought. Do I really want to try out a new roller coaster? What if there are glitches or bugs that haven't been fixed as yet. But I guess the chances of someone dying on a roller coaster are less than dying in a car accident.. - Trinifawk
  20. I think that this reservation rewards thing is when you make a purchase and sign up with reservation rewards in order to be entered into a sweepstake to win alot of money, that they charge the $10 to your account. I was furious when I made an ebay purchase and I ended up completing a customer satisfaction survey to win some money, and signing up for reservation rewards by mistake. I believe that they do offer genuine discounts, but the $10 cost is not worth the money. You can find great discounts and deals from websites such as slickdeals.com or dealcatcher.com or fatwallet and other websites such as those. But I un-enrolled after they billed my credit card, and they refunded me my $10 no questions asked. I'm not sure how much of a scam it actually is, but it's definitely not worth the money. HOpe that helps- trinifawk
  21. This post serves the dual purpose of me recalling my experience with kmart.com and their service as well as venting my frustration with their quality of service. From reading this first sentence, you can probably already guess how my experience with Kmart.com was. BADI was shopping around for an inexpensive birthday present for the girlfriend that could be used to be a buffer in case any of the other presents that I got for her were bad. Her birthday is August 15th, so I decided to order my item from Kmart.com on July 30th, to give me enough time to gift wrap it and have it for her. The online ordering process went well, and I chose to register an account with them instead of being an unregistered customer. The item was a necklace and was supposed to arrive within 5 days of ordering. About a week later, I decided to call them to make sure that nothing on my end was done wrong, and that my order was being taken care of. I called their customer service number, and a polite customer service representative spoke to me and looked up my order, then took my email address and said that they would email me as soon as the item was shipped. I was kind of mad that I had not received my item, but since I had until August 15th, I decided that as long as I got it before then, that I would be fine. On the 20th of August, I finally received the necklace. Luckily, my girlfriend loved her other presents, but I would think twice before ever ordering something from kmart.com again. I was thorougly disappointed with the lack of courtesy on their part to inform me when the item was finally shipped, as I had begun to give up on it. It was a good late-birthday present though. That's my review. - Trinifawk
  22. It seems like a lot of people don't like myspace I use it as a social-networking tool, and I think that it is okay. I do agree that there are too many people on MySpace focused just on their own image, but if they want to do so, then it doesn't bother me. About the website, it seems like a great collection of links. It's also cool that you can register to add your own links to the website, so that users can contribute.
  23. I would say that Toshiba is a risky choice for a brand. I know several people, including my girlfriend, who have had trouble with Toshiba laptops. In her case, the optical drive, which had a dvd burner, stopped working, and there was no fix for it. I'm not sure if it's worth it to have to send back your laptop to get fixed, because that's a pain in the butt. The other thing about Toshiba is that the battery life, as far as the people I know (including the gf) is alot less than what it states. I would go with Apple, or even Sony or Lenovo. As far as processors go, Core 2 Duo is a great choice of processor for a laptop. The apple store has refurbished laptops for pretty good prices, and if you're a college student, you can buy a mac and get a free ipod nano after rebate. A Sony Vaio is also a great choice, but this can be a bit pricey. You can never go wrong with a Sony though, as these things are built like tanks. I would stay away from Gateway, Emachines, Toshiba. Dell and HP/Compaq are good if you get a great deal on them. Just prepare once more for having minor problems with them. If you're dead set on getting that laptop, then nothing is gonna stop you. Good luck with your purchase!
  24. Wow! That's awesome. I see that you used a tablet to draw the picture, which would explain how you got the painting to look like an actual painting instead of something drawn with a mouse. Also, what version of GIMP do you use with Windows Vista? ...You must have a lot of patience to draw that. Good job.
  25. I have relatives abroad and I contantly keep in touch with them through the internet. I think that I could live without a computer if I would be able to have internet use through my mobile phone. But I guess that would still be considered using a computer. Emails and even websites like facebook have become such an integral part of alot of people's every day lifestyles that I think that alot of people won't be able to live without a computer.I would even say that quite a bit of people LIVE ON their computers! I voted that I spent more than 8 hours a day on a computer. About 1-2 hours is actual work that I need to get done. The others are wasting time on websites such as youtube, facebook. dealnews, and other random websites that I come across. Not that there's a nice park outside that I could go play in. I would say that siting in front of a computer is having a bad effect on a lot of people, but if you get your normal amount of exercise and social life, then why not?
