  1. I can't prove you wrong because I believe you're right. Sorry to disappoint you .. :-)I even intended to bash on IE a little when I first read the post, but you got that pretty much covered yourself, so I'll thank you and move along. Now, indeed I've never tried the shadow effect on Select menus since I assumed right away that a multi-component container would never accept such a thing. But I tried it out a minute ago anyway, just to make sure, and it's confirmed. This effect is not possible, as far as I can tell.Perhaps CSS 3.0 might come up with a new thing regarding this matter, although I doubt it. Plus, I firmly believe you should make your Website compatible with at least 2 - if not 3 - major browsers, even if it means sacrificing a bit of visual enhancement.I'm sorry I couldn't bring in any good news. Good luck anyway! :-)
  2. Actually, I'm expecting rather big changes in Apple's products this year. I've heard rumors that Steve Jobbs is working on something major these days. Of course, that means he's over-working his people, unless he learnt something from the past. :-)Anyway, I'll try to keep an eye on this Expo. I've been neglecting the hardware lately in favor of the software
  3. Thank you for a very interesting read, Sietze. But, just so you know, the forum here requires users who publish articles from other sources to "quote" the post, and preferably mention the source. Here's the source anyway ... GMail Is Too Creepy at Google-Watch.com Actually, I didn't actively start thinking "Big Brother" and "Conspiracy Theory" until I heard about the 5% AOL deal. Before that, I occasionally had my doubts, but shrugged them off proposing that Google was simply trying to build a massive user base in hopes of going all commercially ballistic on our heads. I thought that was perfectly valid, especially in the digital business world. My alarms started glowing red and making beeps when I heard about GMail and the unthinkable 2GB accounts. I couldn't fathom it, even under the light of my earlier assumption. Then I made the connection at some point. A gigantic search engine database, a virtually limitless email database, unthinkable funds. I had to take a closer look at their policies. That's when I noticed the plot thichening. Now, I'm keeping watch over things, trying to be careful, which has become excessively hard these days. I'm in the process of setting up my own mail server at home. If I can't keep my privacy at the recepient end, I'm sure as hell going to try to keep it on my end. I believe this post has the potential of getting really hot. I hope more people will join with ideas, comments, perhaps even suggestions.
  4. Alright, now I really don't know what's going on.You're right, the applications you mentioned do not have any bearing on the startup status or any other status, really. Although, I don't know much about NeroCheck since I don't use Nero. But I remember I tried to disable its autostart on a friend's computer, and as far as I could, this wasn't possible from within the application itself. I didn't get to the point of disabling it from msconfig, though, so I don't know if there'd be any consequences to the system.Well, sorry I couldn't be of more help, but I'm glad you got your system back anyway. :-)
  5. Great business sense on Symantec's part. Thanks, sparx.Actually, the NProtect folder has always been shown when you accessed the Recycle Bin directory under DOS. Naturally since almost no one had used DOS in eons except perhaps for experimental reasons, this fact isn't widely known.Plus, I remember seeing my anti-virus scanning the Norton protected files before. I can't be sure, though. Well, either way, Symantec covered themselves against the *hoopla.* :-)
  6. Although I hear there's been a Painter 6, whenever I try to go to MetaCreations' Website, it redirects me to another, quite dissimilar Website. I haven't heard anything about MetaCreations going out of business, and, if they merely changed their URL, I'd think the old one would redirect me to the new one, not a totally irrelevant one. Perhaps someone else can shed some light on this?
  7. I believe you're talking about Norton Utilities, Quartux. :-)This handy set of tools developed by Symantec used to be a big hit in the past, maybe 5-6 years ago. I don't know why it stopped being so popular all of a sudden. Probably because there were no new tools added to it, and the old ones had witnessed no major updates.Well, it's still a very good set of utilities, AND it lets you rename the Recycle Bin.And Jiegh, when someone spends any significant amount of time on his/her computer, they normally feel the need to customize every little detail in their system. At least, I know I do. It's not about pickiness, it's more about personal style. :-)
  8. Actually, kaputnik, you can rename the My Documents folder by simply right-clicking it and choosing Rename from the list. :-)
  9. Totally true, transgrx. :-)Although proper coding styles were a merely means of convenience and maintenance in earlier versions, new features like inheritance, up- and down-casting, polymorphism and the like make it essential to adopt a consistent *correct* style, effectively deminishing the fine line between style and proper syntax.Actually, I come from a low-level programming background (e.g. C, C++) so I think by now I instinctively force myself to more strict coding styles even if the alternative can do the job well. :-)
  10. You used to get 1500-2000 *unique* hits a day? Sweet Zeus!Well, even though I believe 5GB of bandwidth can still fulfill your needs, I wonder, with this kind of popularity, why don't you take the paid hosting route? For example, Xisto - Web Hosting.com seems to offer a lot more space and bandwidth, with more robust servers, and for a very low price.
  11. It might help a lot if you could provide a snippet of the relevant code. After all, with C, a thing as trivial as not properly ending an iteration can cause violations such as this one.(I assumed you were using C, since you didn't use NEW and DELETE).
  12. Well, type-characters used to be very nice short-hands before Visual Basic 5. Some old-timers love it and will debate who says otherwise relentlessly :-).But I suppose you're when you say it's bad; but it's not bad technique, merely bad coding style. At least, I think so.
  13. If I was to discuss features, I wouldn't really choose one over the other, since the features lacking in one are not really that fundamental and may be easily dispensed of. Of course, that's only my opinion; other people are welcome to disagree, especially if they have a certain feature that's essential to their boards. But I'll admit that I haven't started my own bullet-in board yet, so even though I've read a lot about these systems, my opinion may still be a bit superficial. But visually, I don't really like vB, and I'd choose either phpBB or IPB over it any day of the week, with phpBB coming in first.
  14. Actually, szupie, it's more like the other way around. It's basically the way GMail is, if you have a GMail account, you automatically have a Google Account, but you can't have a GMail account unless you got an invite. If it was that easy, why would I post this questin? :-)And m^e, once again, thanks for the edit. I'll try to pay more attention to my titles in the future. :-)
  15. Grafitti,You didn't mention what non-essential programs you deleted. Maybe you could tell us what they were? And you didn't say what version of Windows are you using. But regardless, since you fixed the problem, perhaps I can give you one piece of advice .. Don't delete entries in the msconfig unless you're positively sure they are truly non-essential; you can simply disable them, which will have the exact same effect AND you're covered in case something goes wrong. You'll easily log into Safe Mode, enable the disabled item, and get everything back to normal.
  16. I stand corrected. Orkut.com is indeed merely affiliated with Google, even though this affiliation seems to be getting rather close. Thank you for pointing that out, finaldesign. It's a good thing you have a good social life (I think), but it's my reasoning that "this kind of web services" is not simply a way to advance an existing *real-life* social life. Online communities seem to be having a new, totally separate paradigm of their own. But naturally, this is a matter of varying opinions, and it should belong to a separate thread. My original request remains standing though :-)
  17. Hello everyone,Does anyone here have a Orkut membership, through which he/she could send me an invitation? For those of you who don't know, Orkut is Google's version of an online community. I don't know much more about it, and I doubt many do. It's basically an exclusive club of sorts. Just like Google did with Gmail, you can only join Orkut if you recieve an invitation from a current member. That's why I'm asking whether someone here is. :-) Notice from miCRoSCoPiC^eaRthLinG: Topic title edited to elicit better and quicker responses from other members.
  18. I just came back from a very late, very delicious dinner with my friends. There are fireworks in my stomach. :-)Thanks for replying so soon, and of course I understand that rule, and frankly I believe it's a smart, necessary rule as well. Well, I suppose I can always make the home page about my business, and bury the personal under a subdomain or something. I thought about it and it might be a good idea. But what can I say, I'm greedy. :-)Thanks a lot, m^e.
  19. Very well, then. Give us a "heads up" when everything is working. :-)
  20. Like I said, Houdini, it's not that I *need* another account for my personal site, but when you have a business site, it's a major no-no to include personal things in it. I mean, when I write my poetry, or start my blog rambling about how lousy my day had been, or talk about my theories on chaos math in a business site, would you think that's professional? That's why I find it mandatory to separate my personal from my business site. I understand they can both co-exist beautifully space-wise, as you've clearly shown by your examples, but that's not going to be enough for my purposes. But thanks a lot, really, for the reply. And m^e, thanks for editing the post, I noticed the typo right after I submitted it and it irritated me, but I knew that it'd be understandable. Of course, it'd make me look like an absolute retard, but it'd be understandable. But why didn't you answer me while you were at it? Lol. :-)
  21. Personally, I'd vote for Linux and other *NIX-derivates any day of the week, but I know that's because I have a rather technical background, and I'm one who actually enjoys delving into the inner details of things. But that's not how everyone thinks, which is fine, of course. I believe Windows will always has its users, just like Linux will always has its. It's merely, like everything else, a matter of personal taste. But some Linux users seem at times obsessed with the idea of turning Windows users towards Linux. When I ask them about that, they start talking about the monopolization of OS market by Windows, and the evil of major corporations like Microsoft, and very rarely I hear someone talking about trying to elevate the standards. The fact is, I agree that Windows is lacking in many ways; too many, perhaps. But I'll also have to admit that its driver support has been a great thing, at least for quite a long time. Not to mention, the visual eye-candy, which has proved to be a major player for them.Indeed, the Linux community has gone through major steps to enhance the lacking parts in Linux, and they have succeeded to some extent. And I do believe that using Linux can certainly raise the standards for OS development and general user experience. But still, I know some will never see the point of all that. And those people will most likely stick to Windows. Again, I think that's fine .. to each his own.I know most of what I said has already been said, but hey, it's a forum, I should get to say what I have to say. Or are you people working for Microsoft? *wink*
  22. Actually, Houdini, "password" is ALWAYS the first password a hacker checks for :-). But anyway, thanks for telling us ... now you have to change it. lol.
  23. I don't think cheating is a good idea. I know you were joking, PureHeart, but I just thought, well, if someone was actually thinking about cheating the system, well .. Why?I mean, services like HostBidder and Xisto are actually doing us a great favour. Naturally, they occasionally get profit in return, but still, it IS a favour. And in return they don't ask for much. Only a couple of occasinoal posts in a forum where I've found are genuinely nice and easy to talk to.But, moral and ethical considerations aside, it's a LOT of work to maintain two accounts AND make sure you don't get caught. Yeah well, I digress, I know. So I'll shut up ... for now! :-)
  24. Hello everyone,I was wondering whether it was possible to get two or more hosting accounts here at Xisto? I've already registered one account that's going to be serve as an introduction to my business. Admittedly, it's not going to be too business-related, but still, I think dedicating a personal section in the site may project an amateurish look.So I was wondering whether I could register another site for my personal use. I looked everywhere: in the FAQs, older member questions, and I tried to search the forum itself, but I couldn't come up with search terms specific enough. I have the feeling that I read the answer already somewhere, but I can't be sure.Perhaps someone could help? Thanks in advance. All the best.
  25. Oh come, m^e, I didn't blast him :-).Actually, about the table suggestion, it might help by giving visitors a sense that something is actually loading, but it wouldn't make much difference otherwise. The graphic in its entirety is onlyaround 2.5KB. It's already small enough to load instantly on a dial-up connection. So again, my advice to you, ebbinger, is to either think about upgrading your cable connection or go back to outsourcing your hosting. Good luck either way. :-)Oooooooh, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I take my last comment back.I didn't notice the page was a redirect. So my estimate of the graphic is most probably wrong.Would a moderator join the two posts and substract the points accordingly?! Sorry for the inconvenience.
