  1. Ah ok, thanks. When I run Fdisk, does it erase anything on my HD? And does it do it immediately?Or can I run it and look at the commands without actually partitioning?
  2. Haha, I would but as a new college student...I'm pretty much broke.
  3. Haha, thanks. Maybe I'll try the plugin to the modem route. The download I want is (~3.67gb though) What ports do you recommend changing Bittorrent to?This is my own laptop on a network with about 6 other desktops on it.So yeah, if one gets a virus then it can spread to the others. What is slightly different though is that I'm the only computer on a wireless network - the others are on a wired. My Linksys wireless router is plugged into one of the multiple wired routers around the house. The effect is that I am on my own personal network though - I can't see or access the other computers unless I plugin through a cable.Hope that clears up the situation a bit.
  4. Oh ok, thanks a lot.Now to use Fdisc, do I just download and run?Or is there something special to it?Thanks.
  5. Thanks for all your input guys... The zip/unzip idea, although clever, wouldn't work in my situation. He "monitors" the router and whenever it's flashing alot he goes to see who's using all the bandwith. Bittorrent downloads are extremely slow for me since he's got the router's ports locked down - (highest ul/dl I've gotten is 26/24kbs). Downloads (usually) take days to complete and I wouldn't be at the computer to monitor them 247. PS: Yes, I've tried configuring the router...he's password protected it.
  6. Try the dust and scratches filter under the noise tab. While you're at it add some noise. Hope that helps. BTW: That was with PS 5.0 - yeah, I'm a little outdated.
  7. Well, I haven't had any first hand experience with Alienware but....I used to be an avid fan till I started looking at alternatives and I discovered what most people already know...Alienware is EXTREMELY OVERPRICED. I don't think I would buy one even if I did have the money. I bet it's more of a "social" thing - "hey look at me, I have an Alienware!" But to each his own, I mean, if you have the cash and want the bragging rights - go for it.
  8. Well, from experience, I would recommend a Toshiba Satellite. They are great sturdy little laptops and have pretty good specs for their price. I have the A-35, and the only qualm I have with it is the integrated Intel graphics card. Buuuuuut, most laptops now are being sold with ATI's card in them so you shouldn't have to worry about that. Good luck with your decision.
  9. Hahahahahahhaahahaha....sorry but that was amazing. That's going into my Myspace Check it - all custom CSS by me of course.
  10. Your knowledge and opinions on Bittorrent please. I've used it till recently when my father discovered of its use and shut it down. He is extremely paranoid of any P2P program (had to play system admin one too many times) and won't allow any on the network. He thinks that anyone can get into his personal files and data by me using Bittorrent. Is his assumption true? I know some of the torrents include spyware etc but then again, can't any download? Is Bittorrent itself safe to use - provided that the download is clean? Thanks.
  11. Haha, just a tad over my head. First, what is Fdisk? Second, Where would I get a XP bootdisc? (I have home)- I'm pretty sure last time I used the disc there were no options to partition. I think it was Norton Ghost related. (there was a ghost picture and, if I'm remembering correctly, said Symantec or Norton somewhere) The drive wipe itself took about 20min for my 60gb HD. It restored the laptop back to its original state with all the junk freebies that Toshiba put on it. Third, I already have a boot-from-disc version of Linux - (Gnoppix). Is that good enough or should I try Mandrake? I'm very unfamiliar with Linux. Fourth, I think my drive is FAT32, but I'm not sure. I remember wanting it to be NTFS but that's pretty much it. How would I check and what's the differences between them both? Thanks for the info guys. I'll let you know how it goes when I get around to backing up my files. PS: Is there some sort of info I can post that would fill you guys in a little better? I know in some spyware forums people post their HijackThis "logs" but I don't know if that would help.
  12. Hey all, I am about to reformat my drive on my Toshiba laptop (with the system restore disc it came with) and was wondering about how to partition it so I could run a distro of Linux and XP on it. I'm pretty computer saavy so fire away. Also, any other recommendations instead of Linux? I want to try a new OS but preferably not have to pay anything. Thanks.
  13. I think Blizzard Entertainment is my favorite game publisher of all time. The quality of their games is exceptional, not to mention highly addictive. Right now I'm stuck on World of Warcraft - that game is slowly depleting my savings month by month. If you have the $ and like MMORPG's, then I highly recommend giving WoW a try. You shouldn't be dissapointed.
  14. I find most searching and downloading from torrents comes with the inevitable virus or spyware but: I like the layout of The Pirate Bay. Very simple and clean cut. Anyone could figure out how to use it.
  15. Welcome, I'm new to Xisto too infact. Try downloading the free AVG scanner and Spybot Search & Destroy. They are extremely helpful freeware programs that I highly recommend. Find AVG here and Spybot here. Good luck with cleaning your system. Try to stay away from "one-night downloads" as I like to call them.
  16. You can make certain blog entries in Myspace private, or only allow people on your "preferred" list to view. Just go to the publish blog page and select the privacy type at the bottom of the page. Works like a charm for me.
  17. Well, this is probably overkill for what you'd be using it for but I would recommend the HP Pavilion zv6000 (customized). Right now you can save alot of money from HP and the specs on the laptop are truely phenomenal. It is designed as a desktop replacement though so it will be on the heavy side. Also, the case seemed to be a bit on the cheap side - a tad "plastique". But nonetheless, I still recommend it for the price. I had one almost customized to the max for about $1200. That price also included a free printer! Good luck with the search.
  18. Just like Logan, I highly recommend Spybot Search & Destroy. It has been the best freeware I have ever downloaded, saving my pc from reformatting the hd multiple times. It also includes a program called TeaTimer which monitors your registry in realtime and warns (and lets you allow/disallow) when the registry is changed. You can get them here. (1 download)
  19. Taken from the StarCraft Ghost website: There you go. Eventually there will be a SCII, you just have to be patient.
  20. I love that plugin. I'm already hooked on Firefox and that just sweetened the already sweet deal. It's perfect when you love the color on a certain site but for the life of you can't find its code in the source. Just a quick click and you have the code - I highly recommend it.
  21. Try this site out. It seems to be pretty chock full on information and layouts if you aren't adept with HTML or CSS. Personally I've coded everything on my page myself...makes it feel a bit more "mine". Myspace is one of the most addicting things I have ever come across besides the internet. Think of it as an AIM profile on steroids. You can even instant message within Myspace! Oh yeah, check out my page and tell me what you think of the layout. I'm never satisfied with it.
  22. It isn't necessary to group with someone to get far in this game at all. I've soloed most of my "WoW career" and have done pretty well for myself. But I will say, to get good drops you will want to run the instances in the world which basically require that you have a group. Unless of course, your level is way above the recommended level. BTW: I'm on Shadow Moon ATM lvl 35 Warlock -> Deimos
