.rar is a archieve compression format like .zip. Not an image format.Basically there is GIMP and Photoshop. If you can't or don't want to buy Photoshop, use GIMP. Now that the LWZ patent has expired in most countries, saving to .GIF shouldn't be a problem and JPEG has never been a problem with GIMP.Now GIMP is NOT photoshop nor comes close to replacing PS. But it does argueable do something better. I prefer the lens flare effects from GIMP over Photoshop so I tend to use both. That being said, I use PS with various KODAK filters for restoring pictures every day. But then again that IS my business so...

See that's why I stick to the classics like Wing Commander...'cause you can't fly starfighters unless you work for Locheed. On a slightly less sarcastic note there comes a point where people have to be responsible for their own actions. I know that I can pass a lot of hours playing games and the day's gone before I even know it. I played games a lot while I worked inbetween undergraduate and grad school. I knew as soon as I started Law School the PS2 would have to go. And it did. I no longer have it (not like I have time to play anyway) and really don't play video games much anymore. (Also there is the fact no one is really creating video games I want to play, but that's another topic.)People have to take responsibliy for their own actions. Saying that "XYZ" made me do it doesn't cut it in my book unless one really has a mental defect. At which point lock them up in a padded room for their and everyone else's saftey. To quote Carlos Mancia: "Dee Dee Dee doesn't mean retarted, it means stupid!". And there are a lot of people that are well... Dee Dee Dee.

Cross over networking cable is your best friend. Modem to modem is going to be rather slow, but can work. I installed a NIC in my dad's old compaq with windows 98 SE so we could quickly transfer over a bunch of files including some large graphics files and movie files that were once edited with Adobe Premiere many moons ago. It worked out extremely well only taking a few minutes to transfer.

Easy Video Editing Easy Video Editing
unimatrix replied to backflipkid's topic in Graphics, Design & Animation
I'll also through in Blender3D since it's free and has a lot of NLA featuers in the latest builds inclduing nodes and limited compositing features. It's not as slick as Premiere on the PC or any of the Apple products (iMovieHD, FCE, FCP, etc.) but should do what you ask. -
3D Studio has long been a favorite of game makers. Blender is ideal for that (since it was orginally designed to create NeoGeo games on IRIX and still has an intergrated game engine) but the two major issues I've had with 3D Max in the past have been price point and the fact that it only runs on Windows. Hence why I use Lightwave. And I just finished a 30 day demo of LW9 on Mac Intel and extremely impressed. A new MacBook Pro is in my budget for this year along with upgrades to FC Studio 5 so LW 9 won't be too far behind.

Truth be told, Shake is NOT an effects program: it's a pure compositing application. Frankly I've been impressed with the FX Home bundle. Very easy to use and produces quality effects at a price less than half that of AE or Shake. With Shake now only being $500 I think I'll keep it in my tool kit. Sometimes clients just like to hear what you have. What you actually use is a different story...

Penagon Replaces 400 F/a-18 Hornets
unimatrix replied to sparkx's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Not unexpected. Some of the F/A-18 frames are 20+ years old with a lot of hours. Hours is a problem with a lot of the planes we're flying these days. Especially the A-10's which are 30+ years old and some of the F-15's in the Air force inventory. Plus the F/A-18's have to take the brutal force of carrier landings and salt water which doesn't add life to their lives either. I still don't see the F/A-22 and F-35 (Joint Strike Fighter) being produced in extremely large quanities as drones are the future of arieal combat. That much is clear. -
PC1stpage for website design. http://www.webdesignland.com/ Personally I like it even better than Dreamweaver and it's hard to beat the price. Too bad they don't make a version for Mac. AnyplatformGIMP - If it wasn't for the Kodak and Flaming Pear Plug-ins I use, this would be a great program for graphics editing. It even does somethings better than PS in my opinion.Blender 3D - Best 3D application out there that's free. you can do professional quality works if you have the talent. Also great tool for learning the basic cheap and then transitioning to pro software like Lightwave, Maya, et al.AAA - this is an Axis and Allies Clone written in Java. Nothing fancy, but it plays well and within the rules on any platform.Vegastrike - Okay you really need a good computer and understand how to build the latest version from CVS, but the also check out the Privateer remake mod. Wing Commander Privateer has to be my favorite computer game of all time (okay maybe a close second to Tie Fighter Collectors CD), but Vega Strike is the same thing in a different universe and still extremely fun to play. Mac.Textwrangler - formerally BBedit Lite. BBedit is one of the staples of my editing dietCyberduck - FTP client that is opensourceHandbrake - Opensource DVD ripping software. Great when you need to get a DVD into Final Cut for editing. Solitare XL - Because you need Solitare Terragen - Great program that can use Xgrid.

One Word: AppleLaptops has been the area that Apple has been dominating for years. I'm not sure what video cards they are bundling these days, but generally it has been close to their PC rivials (if not the exact same thing) and now they are all Core Duo processors on the MacBook series. Plus the new magnetic power adaptor rocks. If someone trips over your cord while pugged in, your laptop doesn't go with it. (I had that happen to a 12" powerbook once and that cost $800 in repairs)

Yes, doing 29.97 FPS gets annoying, but typically that's unneccessary until you are doing HDV or 2k/4k film that will be displayed on a big screen. For most of my work in broadcast and for internet distribution I use Apple Shake and then keyframe what I need. Typically I key every 5 - 10 frames depending on the action. That means 3 - 6 redraws per second of video compared to 29 for true rotoscoping. Another handy program I am falling in love with is FXhome's Effects Lab Pro. Originally designed for indie/home/fan film making, it is a must if you do any kind of action or sci-fi work. The muzzle flash generator alone is worth it as the alternatives in Shake are buying stock footage for composites or a couple hours of design work by hand. Also the price point (half of Shake for the Composite Lab/Effects Lab bundle) makes it affordable and it works on both PC and Mac Universal.

When I first went to work for the company I do now, they used easy PHP to host all their webpages from a single 1Ghz Celeron box and DSL connection. The first thing I did was order webspace from 1&1 and moved all the sites over to that server. Why? This company was in the business of website design, not hosting. For $120 a year we could afford way more space and BW than we'd ever use and if we needed more it was real simple to order another package. If I am going to be designing or managing a website, I don't want to have to worry about running the server. I used to lease a dedicated server and all that jazz until the last couple years when the discount server wars began. Even on my busiest personal site that hosts 200MB worth of 3D Models, we use at most 30GB of BW per month.

Well it still passed by earth (the one froma couple years ago) at like 200k kilometers. A little closer than the moon orbits the earth. In astranomical terms, that was a graze. I think a lot of this has to do with funding. While the risk of an asteriod impact exists, we do have the resources that if push came to shove we could do something about it despite what the experts say. This report is by a bunch of scientists that want to test out their "Gravity Tractor" and see if the idea would work. It's a cool idea in the world of physics, but frankly doesn't have that "cool and sexy" feel that say using a nuclear warhead would. I have a better idea, use the money to fund more asteriod finding missions from ground based observatories so that we have a few years to figure something else. So long as we have more than about 6 months, we can think of something and probably several ideas. (Try A, plan B is use lots of nukes)

Wi-fi Speeds. Is it speed as vendors tell us?
unimatrix replied to Ally1405241517's topic in Computer Networks
Even on local networks, I've never gotten above 1.2MB/s transfer on any router. And surfing the net, I've never gotten downloads greater than about 400k. The reason being is that not only is your BW limited from your ISP, BW is often throttled at a server as well. Most servers allow a max of 128kb/s per connection and sometimes less depending on how busy the server is and policies. I've used D-link, Linksys, Netgear, and even Cisco access points with A/B/G settings. My Wireless point works and provides good surfing speeds so i'm not going to complain. -
I have a double edged sword. I prefer laptops because I like mobility, but I am in the video production industry and require as much horsepower as I can get. Because of that I'm stuck with my Quadcore G5 with 8GB of Ram and my 2TB Xserve units for storage for HD projects. Final Cut Pro and Apple Shake (especially Shake) can use all the power I can get. At the same time I do travel, and use a laptop for field production. FCP still runs on this old powerbook (1Ghz G4, 1GB Ram) without too many hiccups, but I miss the real time rendering the G5's provide. I am waiting for Apple to release OSX 10.5 before upgrading to a new MacBook Pro. During long renders, I enjoy getting out of the office and going to a Panera or coffee shop to work. Even if it is just book keeping and answering emails. So really I need both, but I could live without my laptop, but couldn't make a living without my desktops.

Your Opinion On Dreamweaver What is it?
unimatrix replied to SileZigns's topic in Graphics, Design & Animation
I've gone back to Dreamweaver and very impressed. With the Adobe buyout of Macromedia, and GoLive will likely fail so I switched last fall. -
Warcraft Iii it was great in the beginning and it still is
unimatrix replied to Zlash's topic in Computer Gaming
I think Blizzard is focused on the cash cow known as World of Warcraft. That's the game that's making them their money these days. Personally I've never played the game, but know quite a few of people that flunked college and lost a job because of it. -
It would be our luck in trying to divert the asteriod, we made sure it hit us due to a confusiion about emperial and metric units.

Source: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Not a big surprise as both sides did not have a lot to gain through litagation. Looks like both parties go home happy, which is what law should be about: coming to an agreement both sides can deal with.

If there is a market, people will create a new service or some way of doing it. At least the Runescape folk were smart enough to charge a fee for it so they take some of the cut.

What Is The Best Brand For Mouses? What mouse do you use...
unimatrix replied to Sadas's topic in Hardware Workshop
I had the first optical mouse made by Microsoft for 4 years and it worked great until the cord became loose after much abuse. I then had a second one I got free when I purchased MS Office XP and used it until I loaned it out to a cousin and never got it back. Since then I've been using a cheap $10 Ativa optical mouse from Office Depot. Works great, cheap, and is better than Apple's single button mouse or the new mighty mouse. My Dad has one of those might mouses with his new iMac and I hate it! Apple has designed a lot of cool things, but mice have not been one of them. When OSX supported 2-button mouses I just used a regular USB 2-buton with scroll wheel because it's easier to deal with things because Apple mouses looked cool, but I never liked their feel. Especially the ole hockey puck ones. Grrr...those were the worst. Never fit my hand!Apple really should have someone else design their mouse and then just licence out the logo like Microsoft did. The keyboard I use for writing/typing is an old Microsoft USB Natural keyboard with the split keys. I may not like Windows OS, but MS has licensed their name out to some good joysticks, keyboards, mice, and other perphirals.
