  1. The server is online... I left everything at the defaults --Apache running on port 80MySQL running on port 3306The error I get from other machines is the typical "page not found" browser error. My httpd.conf file is already set to "allow from all"I think it might have changed now from a SMF install problem (my ignorance) to a networking problem (cause?)
  2. Yes, you're right, I had used the wrong path to the file. Now it works fine, and the forum is set up. How though am I supposed to get to the forum from a networked computer? Let's assume that my machine running this forum has an IP of 192.168.0.1 and has Simple File Sharing enabled.I'm able to access it through <LOCALHOST>but not through <192.168.2.99> (my IP address) on my own computerTrying to access it through another computer on the network, I also get an error, trying both <192.168.2.99> and .. opened port 80, but no luck so far.
  3. I installed Wampserver, and then extracted the SMF package to C:/SMF so Apache, MySQL, and PHP are all running, according to Wampserver. But when I type the address for installing SMF, it gives me an error saying "Sorry, this installer requires PHP!" why?
  4. Yes, it does. Thanks. Let me get a couple things clear though. When you say "web server & database" you're talking like IIS or Apache, and MySQL?Or are you referring to something different? Then if I were to install the different applications separately, would I run into more problems than if i were to use a prepackaged collection? Also: You didn't say if it will run on XP, or if I need to use a server version. ?Thanks!
  5. I've been thinking about setting up a forum for our office here, since the internet here is down most of the time, and everyone relies on email to communicate, lots of things get dropped. So I thought that a good idea would be to have a forum on the intranet, so that even if the internet goes down, everyone can still communicate. They're also totally clueless with anything more than basic, so the original idea of FTP and shared directories went out the window. So I've been recommended to use SMF as a simple and free forum software, but as I have almost no understanding of it, I have a few questions. Can I install it on windows XP Pro, and have that computer be the host? What else do I need to install? I was told XAMPP or WAMPserver. Is that all I need to install? Then once I get to actually installing it, how would I set the forum url? Would I put in the LAN IP address of the computer I'm running it on? Currently all the computers have XP Pro on them, and support for the 2000 and 2003 server versions isn't very good here, so if it's not absolutely necessary to run in on one of those it'd make life easier.
  6. This is just a formal request, in case the termination script doesn't work, but unfortunately I no longer am able to keep my account alive, and there's no point in keeping the disk space anymore. Since moving to a new job I can't seem to find the time to post with both the volume + quality needed to keep my hosting active. Just wanted to say thanks, though, starting back when Xisto had, i think, 100MB for the package #2 and then steadily increasing, it's always been the best free webhost around and only once did i experience any downtime, when the servers were being upgraded. Still will continue to be a part of the community and add my two cents whenever I do get online. Thanks all~Grafitti
  7. That's a bummer... I guess I could get the guy to burn me a copy... still, for being such a large corporation, you'd think they'd offer better customer support.
  8. And apparently from Vista Sp1 there won't be that problem anymore.... they're removing the major shutdown of features if a pirated/unregistered copy is detected, and simply removes your desktop wallpaper and gives you the notifications that your system has not passed windows genuine advantage validation, like what exists with XP now.
  9. I wish I could have bought stuff.... here there's really no concept of online ordering.
  10. I've got an Acer Aspire 5611 laptop, which was a replacement for another that went bad. This one didn't come with any software or windows installed, I had to get a new copy for it. I've been able to download all the acer drivers and the acer utilities sets, but I can't find anywhere to download the Acer Arcade software, which seems to be a requirement for being able to use the dedicated media buttons on the side of the laptop. Does anyone know where I can find this, or if it's even available? Searching for ideas, I've found one thread that said to use the advanced search function on Acer's website, but it doesn't work for me. Only the regular search button works. It's also a little irritating to find that Acer doesn't have any live technical chat support. With my previous compaq model i was able to chat them up anytime when something went wrong. Now I can't, and on the website the closest support center to me is singapore. Not exactly next door. Any suggestions are appreciated.
  11. Actually that's not a stumbling block.... when setting up ICS windows does automatically set the gateway/IP to 192.168.0.1, but then you can change it. I know because I have two internet connections, one of which is shared and the other isn't. The unshared one has to be set to 192.168.0.1, but when setting up ICS it sets the other one to that IP. So I just go into the shared network properties, and change that IP to something else.. in my case, 192.168.0.4 and then I go and set the other internet IP back to 192.168.0.1 Then on the other computers that will be connecting to the shared connection, I set their gateways and DNS to 192.168.0.4 and they connect straight through that one... no problems so far.
  12. Huge post there, but what the hell is it supposed to mean? Not everyone speaks Spanish. At least try putting it in English, even if it isn't perfect.
  13. You can also buy a cheap used copy on ebay... not the latest, but a good bargain definitely.
  14. Building your own computer is actually quite easy, there's barely anything to it. You just need to know basics, what is what, and it's a breeze putting stuff together. Unless you have absolutely zero knowledge or interest in it, and then a preassembled computer is maybe better. But I will never buy a branded computer.... a waste of money.
  15. here are some threads dealing with this: http://forums.techarena.in/showthread.php?t=742908http://http://www.velocityreviews.com/threads/ad-hoc-network-between-xp-and-vista.515095/apparently though ad hoc netwroking only supports WEP encryption, so you might want to make sure it's not in range of any spots other can get on.
  16. Playing around with a computer directly connected to the modem vs. a router inbetween, I'm thinking there is something to it. Since I've got like 12 computers wirelessly connecting to the router, I'm beginning to think that there might be something where the router isn't hiding all the different IPs accessing it, and that info is getting through to the ISP. It's not a manual block, but possibly an automatic scripting thing on their end. As when I disable everyone except one or two computers, the signal stays up. Then if I've got everyone on it, and there's no more internet, I unplug the modem, wait a few second and then plug it back in. After it does its handshaking bit, it assigns itself the same IP as previous, but the internet is working again. (even when the actual internet access stops, the modem configuration pages still say the connection is active. So all this leads me to think that the ISP has set their servers to kill a connection that shows multiple users. Running this internet through a PC and using the XP ICS, I've had much less downtime.
  17. Lavasoft Ad-Aware is pretty good, and freeware. Of course there are other good ones, and possibly even better, but Ad-Aware is one of the more widespread ones.
  18. I, on the other hand, though I haven't gotten it yet, think I'll be happy with it. I did like the free roam option, as well as the cops, and so I still keep the Most Wanted on my computer, as that was the best of that genre. But I liked the new stuff they put in Carbon... the (compared to previous versions) realistic drifting and the touge racing. It's just one more in the series, as far as I'm concerned. I've always wanted damage to show, since everyone I race with seems to use the walls as an extra steering wheel. Since I drive by actually steering the car, I now have a huge advantage over them. That said, I read in several reviews how NFS is releasing the series in too quick succession, and I agree with that. Even stuff like the choppers, which they took out of carbon because it was too much work. I would rather they doubled the wait time between releases, and put more into the coding.
  19. I guess the changes are under the skin, as I didn't notice anything different. It doesn't crash for me, and takes as long to load as it ever did -- not very long. That could also be due to my slow ISP, so I'm not noticing any lack of speed because it's always slow.
  20. When I run Vista Ultimate with 2 GB of ram, Windows hogs nearly a gig. So for the extra speed you would definitely be better off with more ram. Also migrating from XP to Vista, if you don't go starry eyed from all the eye candy, you'll notice a lacklustre performance problem... I ended up moving back to XP for now, until Vista becomes more stable and faster.
  21. Here the Dollar is tied to the Pakistan Rupee, so the swings between the two are minimal... since the beginning of this year, the Dollar's only increased in value of about 1.5 rupees. However, other currencies like the Pound and Euro have really taken off. The Euro in particular, has shot up nearly 17 rupees since January, which is good for me, since I have my cash in Euro.
  22. Yes, it must be your ISP. even with my horrible ISP here, Xisto loads in several seconds.
  23. Hey there, Jipman... nice to see you around again. Xisto's still alive and kicking, though maybe not at the same level as previously.
  24. It's been a while, so by now it's all sorted out. It turned out to be a combination failure of the processor and motherboard, some little thing on it that froze only with XP. However, since it was a dual core AMD (back then it was almost the first in Pakistan) no one including the authorized Acer dealerships knew how to repair it. I got a little P2 Toshiba from them as a spare machine, and then with that problem, and issues with the stamp on the warranty card, it took 8 months for them to come up with a solution. Meanwhile the laptop had been sent to the center in Bahrain, where they couldn't fix it either, but at least diagnosed the problem. So they sent over a new motherboard and processor from the states, but then informed me that due to the warranty issue (bought from CompUSA -- never again) they wouldn't repair it for free... the cost would have been $500. So since I bought the laptop for $750 after rebates, 500 was a bit too much, seeing as they also said that once repaired, the warranty would be effectively finished. I asked them if they could do anything else, and a friend of mine who knew the top ppl pulled a few strings, and they agreed to offer me the option of the same $500 payment, but for a trade in of my laptop for the current model (from 5116 to 5611) and a 3 year warranty. All considered it sounded like a good deal, especially since it had been a year since the original purchase. Because the laptop specs they sell here are pretty limited (60GB, 512MB ram, combo drive) I got them also to put my previous specs in (160GB, 2GB ram, super multi drive) for no extra cost, and they complied. So now I finally have a working machine, but have learned never to buy AMD in Pakistan, at least for the next few years, till the technology gets a bit more absorbed.
  25. I've tried the steps suggested, but they don't really work. I suspect they're blocking it on their end, though of course they won't say so. I notice it especially after I do a large upload. The internet cuts out and stays off for a few hours, and when I call they insist everything's working. Then mysteriously it starts working again after I either complain to the floor manager or if I wait for a few hours. So because they insist on only one computer rather than a router, I'm thinking to spend $50 for a secondhand P2, and attach the modem to that, and then just use ICS to share the connection. At least that way I fall within their regulations, and they should be more inclined to troubleshoot it speedily.
