Stem Cell Research what do you think?
Jeigh1405241495 replied to bigredrosen's topic in Science and Technology
While your "The Good" is accurate, and first "The bad" is accurate, the last 3 things you mentioned are virtually non-inclusive in this topic since those are pretty much solely about cloning full beings. It is also a controversial topic with pros and cons, but stem cell research and cloning are well differentiated. Stem cell research is allowed by law to some extent. Human cloning is banned in most developed countries.Either way... I'd have to disagree with your second "The Bad" comment since if they tried to use clones as manual labour rights groups would fight them so the clones could lead 'normal lives' more then likely. Although prejudice is plausible...I can't see them uniting to attack non clones lol. This is not meant as an attack against you BigmanB, I just disagree with alot of what you said. -
Stem Cell Research what do you think?
Jeigh1405241495 replied to bigredrosen's topic in Science and Technology
I mentioned some of this in a previous topic, but didn't want to go into the details since it would have been off topic so I'll rant a bit here I recently did a research paper on this topic for a university course so I have done a healthy dose of research and took into account the various legal, moral, ethical, religious, etc issues involved.Firstly I should point out that human cloning "is" possible. I mean, it is obviously not at a point where anyone would try it as there is a high probability of birth defects, low life expectancy, etc, but they -could- clone a human being right now (assuming no one has tried it can just covered it up thus far)Now as far as non-full being cloning stem cell research is concerned I have to be in favor of it. It would allow victims of disease, accidents, etc to be saved. My gran mother has alzheimers and finding out some method could be devised to "fix" the cells in her brain that have become corrupt is something I can't ignore. However some pretty big issues come into play. In order to perform the process an embryo must be created and used. Now the stem cells are removed under a certain time limit (which the scientists feel is before it is classifiable as 'life') but this doesn't mean everyone would believe that these embryo's are not yet living creatures. If one believed it to indeed be alive from day 1, this would entail the murder of human beings to save others. Creation for destruction. It is a decision that each must make for themselves in reality as no government sanction would truly say whether or not to agree with the choice.Frankly, I unders tand that it could be considered creation for the sole purpose of harvesting and destruction, but in my opinion I believe their assumption that the embryo is not yet living is indeed correct. Also, the positives are too great to not outweigh the negatives. The ability to create any cell type, able to create made to order organs, to destroy the effect of numerous ailments... frankly I see that as something that must be explored. On a side note : I AM howevere,. against actual human cloning. Made to order BABIES are a little too ethically intense for my taste. I can see the draw of them but at the same time thats just how I feel about it. So stem cell research yes, actual human cloning no.If anything I said in this article is wrong please correct me... it has been a fair while since I did the research on this topic so I may have said a flawed fact. Also I'm at work and tired lol. -
Frankly, other then for MP3 music I just use whatever windows defaults too usually (unless a problem arises). As far as media playback is concerned, it isn't important enough for me to rank it "actually put effort into it" worthy haha

Mp3 Questions a question for a mp3 beginner like me

YEa I usually have 256kish on my computer (as above that I don't really notice the dif personally...probably due to *BLEEP* speakers) but on my mp3 player I usually try to stick to 128kish, lets you have more songs without a noticeable quality drop. -
Nox Rpg Does anyone else remember NOX?

hmm, not that I am saying I would be interested in obtaining a non paid for version of a game...but...how big of a file would it be? Just out of curiosity of course... -
For music I use winamp... video clips pusually just windows media player whatever version I have now. I use divx and like windvd or something for actual dvd movies or iso's of them...and thats about it
-
...what quality video is it that you could fit 4 movies onto one cd? Or do you mean like 4 seperate clips..? I mean I''ve seen some crazy video compression utilities that saved most of the quality of the video...but 4 full length movies on a cd is insane so I'd guess the quality would be *BLEEP* at best...

If you go from a HIGHER bitrate to a LOWER bitrate, you WILL lose some quality. However, going from a LOWER bitrate to a HIGHER bitrate will not change the quality of the music. If you think about what you are doing it makes some sense.Going from 256k to 128k, you don't have the ability to retain that extra 128k of data. However if you have 128k of data, and go to 256k, you can have ALL of the 128k and still have leftover room. This will simply be unaffected data however since you've already disacrded everything above the original 128k. This is why if you take your MP3's and decompress them into a larger file format, you'll just have big file sizes eating up hard drive space but no extra sound quality. As far as those comparison programs go, it WUOLD help you save sopme room, but they likely couldn't be perfect at finding duplicates or even guarantee not to delete files that ARN'T duplicates...especially if u get a freeware version. -
Well it depends if the slowness is lag or low fps (frames per second). If your connectiong is slow or bad, then you might be laggin (check your ping in game, the higher the number the worse it is. I usually pull 80-120 ping on my dsl connection and its fine in pretty much every game). If your video card is the problem it would be low FPS, this means everything is happening as it should you just see it jittery and you don't actually see every frame of animation. Frankly if you have DSL and a *BLEEP* video crad, I'd guess it was the video card. A poor graphics card WILL make your game slow down, even if you have graphics all set to low eventually and old GPU will make games run poorly and slowly.

If you feel confident you won't be screwing your system up over the next couple hours, try turning off system restore and then scanning/cleaning the spyware. I've had viruses/adware/spyware hide in my system restore folder before and not get deleted as the restore files are often ignored by cleaners since they are used to FIX potential problems caused by programs, thus affecting them with programs would be counter productive...After running the scans turning system restore back on (assuming u had it on in the first place) would be a good idea so u dont break something then get pissed that u turned it off

Two words... Austin Powers...No seriously I think it's a technology that'll eventually be conceived in a logical way to be used on humans. Wether or not I feel it SHOULD be used is another thing as it seems pointless/dangerous depending on how people used it. Sure they could put someone into S.A. who has a lethal disease hoping to revive them when they can be cured...but what if they release other illnesses onto the future populace that had long sicne been thought extinct... just some food for thought. Either way I don't see alot of functional uses for such a technology..but thats just my opinion

The problem with the placebo effect is it can only work to a certain degree of complexity of disease that it is destroying, and that "highest level" would vary between patients... also some people are assumedly immune to the placebo effect from being very curious or skeptical by nature. I beiueve the placebo effect works...just not that you can convince ANYONE to be cured of ANY illness...Also, as everyone else says I hope this cancer cure works out. Also they're still working on the more controversial genetic research which could in essence cure cancer along with coutnless other diseases. Stem cell research genetic modification, and cloning procedures could abolish cancer, birth defects, alzheimers, etc etc (well...it could hypothetically do these things). I did a reseach paper on this topic for a history class lately in university and I was impressed by how much the've done and how much they feel it could accomplish. Moral issues aside it seems promising. The only problem is wether or not its ethical to use the processes involved since you can argue you are "creating life for the sole purpose of ending that life". But its another alternative. Either way, cancer needs to be stopped, along with many other horrible ailments.

With ram I always go for cheap cheap cheap haha. I've played with faster ram in my machine and I noticed a tiny improvement...but if I can buy the ram for like half the price I'll let my fps drop a few clicks lol
-
M60...the only logical course of action is to upgrade to play it...ok maybe not but seriously the game pwns. I havn't done alot of gaming over the last month or so and last night I played about 4 hours straight. Good times
-
Exactly. Although I don't think my systems pulling down quite that much, its awesome knowing the ram is there when its needed. It sucks booting up, firing up a program only to feel it chug as the swappings occuring trying to load some tiny *bottom* program Ah yessss, we in the gig.5 crew roll smoothly indeed haha
-
Odd coincidence since I did the exact same a week or so ago. I found nice 400mhz DDR on sale for way lower then I usually would have found it offline (online would have been a tiny bit cheaper maybe...but whatever it was an impulse buy) but now that I finally have a sizeable ram amount my computer is "complete". Before with 512 it always felt like I was missing something. I had good processor, good video, average ram....hmm...average? not acceptable haha

OMFG played the full version last night after finally getting my grubby little paws on it and I loved it muchly. THe rest of the maps are pretty awesome and there's just so many cool aspects to the game its mind boggling. I can't wait to get home from work tonight so I can sink my teeth into it even more. Drop a handful of hours playing away. The whole apsects of formalized squads IMO gives the game something that no other has had for me. The ability to have a massive battlke being waged yet being part of a smaller more refined event within it adds a new level that I havn't experienced befre in a game, especially not online. Actually makng it so a bunch of random ppl can get together and work well in a group makes me give the game 72.3 thumbs up.

I remember hearing about that game, thought it looked pretty cool but never really heard of anyone I knew having it or playing it so I couldn't get a good idea if it had been worth the money or not. Then I assume I had forgotten about it by the time it dropped to 9.99 since I would likely have picked it up just for the hell of it at that price. Either way, hope you find some more info on it if you love it that much. G'luck -
Awesome, the only online game I've really been playing lately if the BF2 demop, which will soon become BF2 retail. I play the odd other game but only when someone else I know is playing
-
Oh nah I was moreso just wondering who else here used it so some people might be able to get some games going. Once people post their id's its easy to get together for games... I actually already have it and everything so its all good.http://www.xfire.com/
-
Hey everyone, I was just wondering how many of you use this program and what all of your gamer ids are. For those who don't know, Xfire is an IM style client (think msn/aim for gaming) with alot of built in multiplayer support. It automatically shows those on your list what game you are currently playing and allows them to simply click a "join game" option if your on a multiplayer server and they also have the game. Its a really good way to coordinate multiplayer gaming and allows you to chat through the program to ppl even while within a particular game.So yea, everyone who has it should post their xfire id's so we can get some games going in whatever people on here play. My xfire id is jeigh so add me to your lists if you want. Lately I've been playing Counter-Strike Source online for the most part, but I'll be playing alot of BF2 once it goes retail in a few days, as well as the other odd game I play when someone wants to fire one up. Anyways if you want to post your id and what games you play, awesome.(Oh, and yes I know this doesn't necessarily fit here...as xfire is for all games not just FPS's but I was unsure which subforum it best fit in so I just stuck it here... if an admin wants to move it somewhere more appropriate please do so)

I love all their stuff, their true albums are amazing, reanimation blew me away because usually I hate remix stuff but I actually liked most of those as much or more then the originals (sans a few) and collision course made me flip the hell out because I love LP and Jay-Z and it was such well done mixes of the songs. Loved it bunches I did.Even the live from texas or wherever album was pretty awesome, again I usually dont love live stuff but it rocked. Maybe I'm just super LP biased haha. Anyways I can't wait for another release from them woo

Final Fantasy Vii The good and the bads
Jeigh1405241495 replied to rogerton's topic in Computer Gaming
Oh yea I know your not bashing it, I just disagree with you. I mean I agree with the simplification aspect of it, but that doesn't mean its not as great as many make it sound. Just because like...for my opinion if a game is loved by most everyone that plays it, that makes it a great game. If a game is redicuously high quality in the various factors that make a game an RPG...but lacks the enjoyment factor or isn't as fun to play as another game, I'd say it wasn't as great...but thats just how I personally decide whether I feel a game is great or not. I mean some people base it solely on graphics, some soely on gameplay, me...pretty much just all around enjoyment. So theres my 3.756 cents -
Do Aliens Really Exist? Hot Debate! do they really exist?
Jeigh1405241495 replied to tcave's topic in Science and Technology
You can't say aliens don't exist because we havn't seen them or they havn't communicated with us...I mean there could be thousands of alien races in the universe...some less, equally, or more advanced then us. However this doesn't mean they are close enough to us to realize we are here or to have randomly stumbled upon earth. I mean if we had the ability to travel at sci-fi speeds and locate all planets, would we explore every last one? I mean earth might not even be hospitable to the ones within travelling distance, so why would they **** with us? I mean seriously, narrow mindedness can damage certain arguments severely...you've gotta see the big picture. If we knew how to travel to other inhabitable worlds, we -might- visit them...but at the same time we might fear contact would spur agrression -
Final Fantasy Vii The good and the bads
Jeigh1405241495 replied to rogerton's topic in Computer Gaming
Well since you even admitted it helped alot of people get into the genre, it would technically likely be 'genre defining' for those people since it was there only exposure to RPG's and as such would spawn a large population of gamers that define RPG's based on what they saw in FFVII...just...so ya kno
