Longhorn sounds totally lame. All those 3d windows and DRM enforcers. And even if it's not based on .net, it's still lame.

I voted for Quanta. It's what I always used back when I still did work with Static HTML... It has great features and intergrates well with KDE.

Online Dating Sites Do you use them?
madcrow replied to rhodesian.dragon's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I've tried to use one to find people who live in my area... But none of these online classified services are any good. They all charge to leave emails... -
Yup, for any OS you have to burn it and reboot. You can't generally install Linux from within windoze... SuSE is better than Mandrake anyway, tho.

Windows Apps In Linux what program should i use ?
madcrow replied to ebbinger_413's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I generally only use older programs, so plaint vanilla WINE works for me...I mainly use it to run old windows 3.1 strategy games. -
I have a 2ghz laptop that has 512 MB of RAM, but a horrible graphics chip (intel extreme graphics 2). but it's over 2 years old...

This looks like just another Linux distribution here... I would like to know what language it's in, though.

Best Fps Ever! what do you think is the best fps ever?
madcrow replied to iGuest's topic in Computer Gaming
The Rainbow series was great early on but it just gets lamer and lamer as time goes on. -
Normally just one, but occasionaly I hook up a TV through my VGA->TV box, so I could say two also. But I didn't.

Getting New Vid Card which one is better
madcrow replied to ebbinger_413's topic in Hardware Workshop
You're not really going to go wrong with either card. Still, I wouldn't 100% trust any video card I got at Walmart. I'd much rather go to Micro Center or shop online... -
There IS such a thing as Lunix and they may have been talking about that. http://lng.sourceforge.net/ if they were, this should go either into the very alterative or "other unix" section though. Still, a multitasking Unix clone on an 8-bit CPU with 64KB RAM == Very Impressive.

I've heard nice things about openBSD, but I've heard even nicer things about FreeBSD and NetBSD. The only real reason to use openbsd is if you're totally paranoid about security.

Best Fps Ever! what do you think is the best fps ever?
madcrow replied to iGuest's topic in Computer Gaming
I'd probably have to say Duke Nukem 3D. That was just the kewlest game ever when it came out and it;s still tons of fun. You gotta love all the humor they put in there. -
Windows Server isn't even very good software-wise. Apache is much more stable and featureful, even when installed over a crap-OS like windoze.

Whats The Best Tool For A Beginner? whats the best program for a beginner?
madcrow replied to konedima's topic in Programming
Depends. You could make a Myst-like game in HTML using image maps. You could also make the electronic version of one of those choose-your-own-adventure books. But no, HTML isn't generally considered a game making language. -
512MB Graphics Cards Buy one now or later?
madcrow replied to IcedMetal's topic in Hardware Workshop
Looks nice, but it kinda makes me think... 512MB, that's as much RAM as my laptop has... And it costs more than my laptop did, too. -
DVDs are almost 10 years old... That said VHS lasted about 20... Still, there are no real plans to ship movies on Bluray discs. At the moment PS3 is the only thing that's planning to use it. That said, 50GB games sound nice.
-
I'm not sure about the film studio thing, I think it's just a rumor... But about the PS3, 50GB games on one disk... Sounds nice. Yet another reason to ignore xb360 and go with Sony. The Japanese actually know what they're doing when it comes to gaming.

Physics Behind The Lightsaber Can it become true
madcrow replied to Amadeus1405241494's topic in Science and Technology
A lightsaber strikes me as much more buildable than a blaster seeing as we already have lasers that can cut things. It would just be a matter of broadening laser technology to work with other types of energy than visible-spectrum light. Granted that wouldn't be easy, but it's probably doable. -
I run SuSE 9.3 on my laptop and I've yet to have any problems with it. The only problem is that there's a bug in my video chip that means that except under Windows, which does things to get around the bug, my GFX resolution is limited to 800x600. But that's just a minor problem: everything else works 110% Even the lousy built-in "modem" (I refuse to call any device that doesn't work as a REAL serial port in real hardware a modem w/o quotes)

I was expecting something like this to happen. This is a great example of why software patents are a truly evil thing: they stifile the abilities of programmers to write useful programs and give companies ways to kill off any competion, essentially creating monopolies. I guess you should convice your friend to switch to a more Linux-friendly IM network ATM though.

It's official the PS3 is going to use Blueray disks. Also, the Blueray disk is probably going to be the system for storing HD video, which takes up a lot more space than the SD video stored on DVD.Also Billwaa, DVD video is 9 GB, and VCD is 700 MB...

I hate M$ and this is no different. Windows reached decent (but not great) stability with XP, and now they are planning something with so many lame new features (ooh, 3d windows. who cares...) that it will take a super computer to run and will probably crash all the time. Plus it will have all kind of built-in "copyright" protections that will take away your ability to backup software, music and movies as well as blocking direct hardware access, thus making any free software that plays DVDs by reading and brute-decoding the data bite the dust. I am NOT at all waiting for this release to come out and in fact hope that all work M$ has done on it gets lost.
