  1. I agree that of the browsers I tested, Internet Explorer handles the transforms best, but from the Webmaster's point of view, it doesn't make much of a difference who is to blame. As long as a significant percentage of Web users are using browsers which don't handle the transforms well, as Webmasters we just can't use client-side transforms. Unless we want to play childish games to prove a point, at the expense of our own content.
  2. Some of the other features might be useful, but what possible use could a human being have for a terabyte of email storage?I suspect that it's a gimmick, and therefore don't trust them. They know very well that the overwhelming majority of users will come nowhere near using a terabyte of space, and I'm sure that they just don't have anything near a terabyte of space available for any reasonable number of users. Which is not quite honest. As I said, this kind of thing makes me suspicious. They'll start lying to us by means of insignificant half-truths, and who knows what they'll do next.
  3. Mainly as an exercise in XML, I am running two Web sites, both pretty popular even if one is a little silly, off of XML databases. There are three important things I have learned, aside from how to write XML and to transform it into something convenient and readable:1. There seems to be no good free GUI which would allow for the convenient use of XML databases as general-purpose databases on a desktop machine.2. If using XML to run a Web site, the transforms have to be server-side. Client-side handling by browsers is too inconsistent.3. Current XML is too slow to allow it to run Web sites off of databases of any significant size. I have seen others discuss this problem, and they are talking about a future of compiled XML. It would probably be a wonderful idea, but first I want to see it happen, and then I would want to see if it is cross-platform portable.
  4. The investing world is full of guesses right now as to why eBay bought Skype, and what they're going to do with it. Among the guesses is that there's no point in trying to make much sense out of it, because it's a boo-boo, or that Meg Whatshername isn't planning to do anything to connect Skype with eBay, and that it's just intended as a stand-alone money-maker. Even as a stand-alone they don't know how she's planning to 'monetize' it, as the jargon goes, but it's popular and technically successful, so there is likely to be a solution.
  5. There are other problems with Wine also. I tried to run scripts for the NoteTab Pro scriptable text editor on Wine. Although the basic editor functions worked, some of the script functions didn't work, and it was unusable. I suspect that instead of trying to use NoteTab on Linux, I'll end up trying to find a graphical front end for Awk, which will do roughly the same thing.
  6. I don't see how this could possibly be to my advantage, since up to now I've only used Skype's free services, but maybe it won't be greatly to my disadvantage either. If they're going to add advertising without limiting the current services, I can probably live with it.
  7. How do you know that that's what she likes? Maybe she'd rather have perfume, or a cameo necklace. Maybe she wants you to take her out to a restaurant.
  8. Nothing is foolproof, but some elementary caution will help:1. Never assign permissions to any user or object greater than what they really need to be used.2. Use the HTML maxlength attribute when practical to prevent people from entering scripts into text boxes.3. Always have a default object in every directory, to make it harder for people to discover your directory structure.
  9. I also think that GMail is the best, but everyone should know that Skaffe also has 1 GB free Web-based email now.
  10. Thanks, sparx. This is indeed amazing. I haven't used Opera much since Opera 5.12, when the free version didn't yet exist, but I'm certainly interested in trying it again.
  11. Suppose that you have some documents you want to share on a machine whose network name is ForSharing, in a folder called C:\MyStories\, and you want to copy them to a machine call TheClient, or copy them to it. The easiest way to do this, IMHO, is using Windows drive mapping. First make sure that the two machines have the same workgroup name. Log onto ForSharing (best as an Administrator), go to C: (if you're not already there, right click on the MyStories folder, Properties|Sharing, and tell Windows that you want to share it. You can probably leave the permissions on their current defaults, for now. It's best to make up a new share name, instead of the default share name. StoryShare, for example. After you click OK, you will discover that Windows has put a little hand on the icon representing MyStories, to show that it has been shared. Now log onto TheClient. Double click My Computer (or any other folder or virtual folder). Hit "Tools" on the top. Then choose "Map Network Drive". In the worst case, choose a letter for the virtual drive, then type in \\ForSharing\StoryShare . ("Browse" usually works, but....) "Reconnect at logon" means what it says; you can use it or not. Depending on permissions and other security settings, you may have to use "Connect using another user name". If not, hitting Finish will give you a screen which asks for a password. These instructions are for Win2000, and will probably also work in WinXP Classic View. Things may have different names in the snazzy view. If you run into trouble, give us details as to what goes wrong, including the error message you get at each stage.
  12. I assume that you mean an FTP client, not a server. I'm not sure that there's one that's best. You have to find one which suits your needs and tastes. I like WS_FTP Pro, mainly because the synchronization gadget is very flexible, and thus well suited both to making backups and to emergency restores. I also like having a pretty active user-to-user support list, as well as more conventional support. WS_FTP Pro is certainly not free for people who use it to maintain profit-making sites, and may not be free for anyone any more. If you have no strong preference, don't forget that there are a lot of free FTP clients around.
  13. Just some general security notes which could help many people, both of which occured to me in connection with the recent worm outbreak: 1. One of the best ways to prevent worm infections is to make one's system completely invisible to the outside world, in other words, to stealth it. One of the best places to check to see if your system is invisible is at Gibson Research's Shield's Up. (No, guys, that's not an affiliate link. That's just the way he likes to do his URLs. As a result of testing there, I realized that even though I have good software firewalls on both my desktop machines, I should also activate the firewall in the router, since otherwise my network is visible to port scans and other probes from the outside world. Check out his other freeware security utilities also. 2. Most people should block all TFTP communication in their firewalls. That protocol may have some legitimate uses, but I've never seen it used for anything but worms, including Zotob.
  14. I have mine divided more by subject than by file type or protocol, but I'm not doctrinaire about it. Here's one example:/recipes/cgi-bin/images/logos
  15. 1. What is the "From" address for the forum auto-responder? I never get the email notifications for threads I'm tracking, and I want to try putting the "From" address in my white lists.2. How does one submit a support ticket?
  16. I got the same message today using Mepis. I fixed it just by configuring the sound card drivers. Find out how one does it in Red Hat, and then do it. It's almost certainly your entire problem.
  17. I still can't find the "Edit" button, but now I've got another question:What is the "From" address on the Xisto automailer mails telling us about replies to our posts? I've stopped getting any, and I want to try whitelisting them.
  18. It's working for me right now, too, but it's been on-again off-again for days.
  19. First of all, don't forget that the overwhelming majority of visitors to any website don't buy, and that the hosting world is becoming much more competitive.Your site is generally very good. A few things I'm not enthusiastic about:1. The smiling young lady with the headset. Those kind of images add nothing, and I'm tired of seeing them everywhere.2. The testimonial. Most testimonials are fake, and everyone knows it. If you want to have testimonials at all, include the author's URL as a working link, to make it more believable. In addition, more people will write testimonials for you to get the link. Some things which might be added:1. Mention CPanel prominently on the first page of the features list. CPanel is a very good and very popular tool.2. Talk your satisfied customers into writing real reviews talking you up on the hosting customer review sites.
  20. I can never make sense out of posts like this. When a person talks about "freedom of speech", he is usually talking about the kind of rights discussed in the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, and similar documents. Since Houdini talks about legality, overthrowing the government, etc., in addition to the right of "freedom of speech", it is even more clear that he is referencing these documents by implication. Those documents state or assume that a person has the right to speak free of government interference. Specifically, the First Amendment to the United States Constitution says that In fact, the courts in the United States have quite reasonably claimed that even that right has its limits. There may be some legal document somewhere which says that Xisto has no right to abridge an absolute "freedom of speech" on the servers which they privately own or rent, but I won't believe it until I see it. Until I do, I will assume that Xisto, if they want to, can forbid on their own servers posts containing the letter W, or statements that Nils - I suppose that that's the owner of Xisto - has an ugly sister, or statements about the "lameness" of their forums. In fact, if the law were to arbitrarily force Xisto to post absolutely anything that someone submitted to their private servers, the law would be damaging Xisto's right to private property, which is guaranteed by the Fifth Amendment to the Constitution. The US Supreme Court has itself admitted that, using the famous sentence "Private means private".
  21. What is a MySpace? Don't tell me to go there and look, because I just did, and still can't figure it out. Is it a host for free blogs?
  22. I wasn't sure where to put this, but it certainly seems that there should be a place for it on the boards, and this seemed the closest. When I try to use the "My Assistant" link, it simply opens http://forums.xisto.com/index.php? instead.
  23. How can I edit one of my posts which I've posted on these boards?
  24. AluriaDavid, This sentence could only have been written by the employee of a company which treats its customers with contempt. You were incapable of admitting that your company did something wrong, and that microscopic^earthling had a bad experience as the result of your behavior. You had to add the word "feel", suggesting that he only feels that he was mistreated, but that really, you were just fine, and that he is the problem. Since you cannot admit that you did something wrong, you obvious can't fix it, since a problem which doesn't exist can't be fixed. AluriaDavid, microscopic^earthling's post would probably have convinced me, and dozens of others who have seen it, never to do business with Aluria, but it was your post which finally convinced me that Aluria is hopeless. For years I did business with a company providing investment information. When they started providing Net services, I signed up for one of their free offers. They didn't provide the product they had promised. In one of their emails, among the contradictory lies about the source of the problem in which various departments blamed each other, they pulled this "experience you feel you have had" business. They eventually did provide the product, but their free offer lost them a paying customer whom they had had for years. microscopic^earthling, Aluria's product is not working as claimed. In many states and countries, the law requires them to return your money, whether they admit to having a guarantee or not. In the meantime, to help protect others, I would complain to The Federal Trade Commission, The Better Business Bureau, the numerous consumer complaint sites such as Complaints.com, and the numerous product review and software review sites all over the Net. Aluria makes it pretty clear that they don't care about their customers, and don't intend solving your problem, but if your complaints and those of others drive them out of business, at least it will help improve customer service by the remaining companies. Thanks. Cassy.
  25. That's quite an accusation. Could you give us the URLs of some authoritative sites with the details, please.
