KaZaA and Limewire aren't actually download managers, they're peer to peer (or P2P) programs. They allow you (one peer) to connect to other users (other peers) on their network and transfer files between each other. Once you start downloading a file off another peer, the program will manage that download for you, but it is not regarded as a download manager. The download managers being discussed in this thread are programs that will manage your downloads from web sites (ie. when you click on a link on a web page that automatically starts downloading a file... for example downloading an application from download.com). If you are using Internet Explorer, when you start a download you will see a small window pop up that tells you the name of the file you are downloading, the speed you are downloading at and the percentage downloaded. This window is actually your download manager. If you use Firefox you will see a similar window, except this window shows previously downloaded files, and also allows you to pause/resume you downloads at any time. This again is a download manager, a some what better one that Internet Explorer's one. As you may have read in this thread, there are also some other add-on download managers you can use, some that add features that accelerate download speeds and other simple ones that just add more convenience to the original managers provided with web browsers. To get a good example of what everyone is talking about, I suggest you download and try a couple of the managers mentioned in this thread... who knows, you might even be very pleased with one of them and add a new favourite item to your PC's inventory.

Awesome... thanks for the tips micro! Although I haven't really had this problem too recently, and never really bothered about it too much when it did happen, I was some what annoyed at the times it did happen. Now I know how to fix the problem if need be. I'd never touch the registry, just because I'm too scared to play with anything in there and screw up my whole computer, so I'd have to try out those programs. Cheers for the links

Linux Rules! Kde Or Gnome?
JimBeam1405241475 replied to polarysekt's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Totally unrelated post to the topic... but god I hate it when people use the word pwn. The word own is annoying enough when used in that context, but if you have to use it, please spell it properly at least.Sorry for the rant, I must be getting too old for the internet... but I just enjoy reading stuff when it's been written properly. And hey, nothing against you personally polar, you're posts seem to be pretty good so far and I like you already... it's just a general rant about that damn word PWN. If you had written something like omg dat kde gui is lyke da bezt it fkn pwnzzz!!!, then it would be personal Just like this post; First of all, why spell it with a 'z'? And secondly, why use three of them? It's just ridiculous and so damn annoying to read. But oh well, I'll shut up now.[/rant] -
Nah that's just all skins using WindowsBlinds... and like I said before, I don't want to go back to using that. Plus this is an official Microsoft theme, which I prefer because it's genuine.

I'm using an AMD Athlon64 3000+ and I don't have any problems with it getting too hot. The only fans I have running are the CPU fan that came with the CPU, and a regular case fan. But these are standard to any system, so no I would definitely say that AMD processors don't require many fans. Although it never hurts to keep your CPU running as cool as possible, so the extra fans would not be bad thing.

If you knew how to properly set your upload limits you would definitely see a big change in download speeds. There is a good tutorial on the suprnova.org forums which explains how to find the right settings for you. If you're interested, go to http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ and sign up, then look through the tutorial forum to find a thread labelled "HOW-TO: Increase download speeds with BitTorrent" or something like that. I did this after a short time of using BitTorrent and I was amazed with the improvement. If you can't be bothered reading a tutorial, just try playing with the limits by yourself and you may get lucky, I personally have my limits set to;Upload speed: 12 kbps Upload users: 3 and I get full use of my bandwidth... of course depending on how many other peers there are, but at times I get download speeds of 150kbps which is about the best my 1.5 MB connection can handle.

Ways To Improve Your Performance In Windows XP
JimBeam1405241475 replied to ffx2net's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Hey thanks for the tips, both of you... I'll definitely be trying them all out because I've recently noticed that my PC has been running considerably slower than usual. Hopefully by following some of these tips I can get my machine running fast again. microscopic^earthling, any tips on where I could get that program? And if/when I try it out and am having problems, any chance you could give me some further tips on what to do? I generally don't like to disable or delete stuff when I don't know exactly what it's function is and what effect it is going to have. -
I didn't know exactly which subforum to put this in, so I'm sorry if you guys don't thikn it belongs in here, but it is a billiards simulator game. Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone else on these boards play Carom3D? It is undoubtadly the best (free) online multiplayer billiards game. The graphics and physics of this game are amazing, especially for a free application. For anyone who hasn't played it before, the range of games you can play are; -8 ball -9 ball -Rotation ball -Card ball -Short Snooker -Long Snooker -4 ball -6 ball -3 cushion I think that's all of them, but I may have missed one or two. The last three (4 ball, 6 ball, 3 cushion) are a type of billiards game on a table without pockets. Unlike other billiards games in which the aim is to pot the balls into the pockets to score points or clear the table, the aim of these games is to hit the different balls on the table in certain combinations to score points. These games are very hard, and will earn you more points for a win as well as subtract more points for a loss than the other regular billiards games. In general, the difficulty of the game type decides what point gain/loss you will receive at the end of a game. This game is very fun, not only because of the wide range of game types available, but because you are given a rating for each game type, and an overall skill level. You start with a rating of 1000, and skill level of a silver chalk. The more you win, the more rating and skill level points you gain. Skill levels advance through; Chalk>Ring>Medal>Trophy>Laurel Crown>Crown with a bronze/silver/gold level for each category. For example, at the moment my account is at the Silver Trophy level, next will be Gold Trophy and then Bronze Laurel Crown. These different skill levels gives you something to aim for, adding to the enjoyment of the game. And believe me, it aint easy to level up quickly, especially once you hit the trophy stage, it's taken me about 3000 games to get to where I am. Anyway that's enough chatter from me, just go and check out the game if you haven't played it before at; http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Or if you already do play it, reply here and maybe I can show you how the proffessionals do it j/k, I'd just like to know if anyone else plays this.

I just use BitTornado. The only extra feature really needed is the ability to adjust upload limits, and BitTornado does this. It may not be the best client out there, but it's light and does everything I need it to, so it's perfect for me. Some people prefer a client that supports multiple downloads in one window, or pretty interface like Azereus, but I like to keep things simple. Only personal preference though, I don't think there can be a best and worst of BitTorrent clients, it just depends on the users' needs.

Yeah true. I take back what I said before... it is awesome! At first I didn't see anything too great about it, but after using it for a little while I love it. The changes in it are only subtle, but it does look so much better than before, and somehow I enjoy using my PC more now than I did before. And just like you, I was also thinking of going back to WindowsBlinds, because I was getting very tired of the Luna theme. Thankfully I came across this first and didn't have to resort to WB

Can't Log In To Cpanel
JimBeam1405241475 replied to JimBeam1405241475's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I got it working and have logged in successfully now. This thread can be closed now, no need for it be open anymore. Thanks for the reply OpaQue. -
I just installed it too, and I wouldn't say it's awesome. It is a good improvement on the original theme, but it's nothing extraordinary. For anyone wanting to know what it looks like, here is a screenshot of my desktop with the new theme;

Recently I was away from home and not able to come to the forums, and so my credits went below the allowed to amount. After making a couple of posts, I was back above 3 credit points and was sent an email saying my account had been un-suspended, and to check my account to see if it was working. It also said if it wasn't working, I should post in here for support. So here I am. Obviously my account isn't working, and I can't log in to cPanel. At first I thought I may have just forgotten my password, so using the password recovery tool I reset my password, but I still can't log in. I then thought it may just be a problem with the cPanel, so I tried logging in to my account through FTP, but I just kept getting the wrong password error still. So is there a problem with my account? Maybe the cPanel password wasn't updated when I changed the forum account password? Or maybe it just takes a little while for it to become active again and I'm just being impatient? Either way, the email sent to me said I should post here if I have any problems, so here you go.I'll keep trying to log in, and if I finally get in before anyone replies I'll report back here so I don't waste anybody's time.

I don't really have a lot of experience with OS's.. I'm not really into it that much. The only OS's I have used seriously are Win95, WinME and WinXP. I definately like XP the best in terms of stability... but for me it is hard to compare these. My old system was first running Win95, then WinME. When I upgraded my computer I installed WinXP. It does seem a lot more stable than the previous OS's I used, but it could possibly be that my new PC is just more stable. So from what I've tried, my list of OS's stability from best to worst;WinXPWin95WinME (this one really... REALLY sucked!)

I'd definitely advise otherwise. A rechargable battery does a much better job (lasts longer, so you can take more pictures on a full battery) and doesn't cost you anything. And if you're worried about running out of battery power when you go away, you can always buy a bigger back up battery. That might cost a bit much... but it's only a one off purchase, unlike disposable batteries that you have to keep buying constantly. And you said it's more convenient to be able to buy more batteries from anywhere whenever you need them. Well I say it's more convenient to always have the battery on you, and when it needs charging all you have to do is plug it in. I don't want to be going out to the shops to buy batteries every time my batteries go flat. I guess it all comes down to your own preference... but I'd definitely suggest a rechargable battery type camera.

That too is also a joke... but the point I was actually trying to make, is the law states you cannot make a copy of something you bought legelly for personal use. One of the best examples is copying personal DVD's as a back up of your personal collection. It is VERY common for a DVD to get scratched and become useless, so people like to make a back up copy for themsleves, just in case it get's scratched and ruined, they still have a copy. The industry is just trying to force people to buy more of their stuff. There was already a law in place which stated you are not allowed to sell pirated material. This law was perfect, it makes complete sense... if you didn't make the product or have the rights to it, you should not be allowed to make a profit off of it. I guess they just got fed up because that law was too hard to control... it's too easy to evade... so they made tougher laws with harsher penalties to try and make people stop doing it.

Yeah me too. LCD's may be the newest thing out, and have the best picture quality and all that other crap.... but when you take into account the life span, viewing angle, reliability, cost and all that compared to CRT monitors... CRT's seem to come out on top. And you get a good new flat screen monitor and the difference in picture quality is hardly noticeable compared to LCD... so unless you can really afford it, or desperately need to save desk space... an LCD is not worth the money.Just my opinion though... I'm sure others have their opinions on why LCD's are so much better.

What Kind Of Processor Should I Get?
JimBeam1405241475 replied to kc8yff's topic in Hardware Workshop
I personally prefer AMD. I bought my AMD Athlon64 3000+ mid last year and I love it. It wasn't too expensive back then, so I'd imagine you could get something a lot better for a decent price now. It's up to you though, and I guess it may depend on what you're going to use your computer for. I recently started a poll asking the question "AMD or Intel?"... it has quite a few replies with peoples opinions on the 2 CPU's, so for a better idea of what these people would suggest, have a loot at that thread. It's called "AMD or P4?". -
That's insane... $25 American dollars just for a cd? That would be somewhere around $45-$50 Australian, and that is just ridiculous! Depending on how new the album is, you can usually expect to pay $30 for an album here... so somewhere around $15 American.I'm pretty sure the law states you can not pirate copywrited material, whether you own the original copy or not. It's a joke I know... and a lot of people protest this law, but it doesn't look like it will be reversed any time soon. Well this is how it is here anyway... and I'm pretty sure American laws are a LOT tougher than they are here, and usually the UK seems to be pretty similar to the rest of us.

I actually quite like DAP. Ever since I started using it I have loved it... and have never had any problems with it's interface. I guess it all comes down to your own personal opinion... but me, I like!I did try GetRight once and didn't like that very much though.

It does support resume... as far as I'm aware anyway. Whenever I have a download going, there is always a "Pause" button right under the file name of the file I am downloading. If you hit this button and pause the download, the button changes to "Resume". Obviously, pressing this button will resume your download from where it was stopped. I don't know why it doesn't work for you, that seems very odd to me... but have another look and you might find that it does in fact support download resume. If it in fact doesn't have this feature, maybe your Firefox is out of date and needs upgrading. I don't know though, I'm fairly new to Firefox, and it has had this feature since I started using it. I have no idea what features it had in previous versions.

It was posted on another forum that I visit regularly. I thought it was amazing, and when I came across this forum here I thought it was appropriate to post it here. I'm glad to see you guys are happy with the site, although I was sure people would like it. It proved to be quite popular over at the other forum where I found it.

The iPod Shuffle Finally, an iPod for any occasion
JimBeam1405241475 replied to Brian1405241474's topic in Hardware Workshop
LoL that's true. But, a lot of the time companies release new stuff and it is innovative to the industry. Sure, it's the company's main goal to make money... but usually new releases have something new about them that is new and special. In my opinion... with this iPod Shuffle they've taken a step backwards. They've grabbed a regular iPod, made it smaller and given it a different look, taken away the screen and only given it the possibility of playing songs in a random order (shuffle), which I'm sure a regular iPod can do anyway (I am unsure though, I don't have an iPod of my own so I don't know all of it's functions... feel free to prove me wrong). From what I can see, there is nothing special about these new iPod's... apart from the name and lack of functions as compared to regular iPod/iPod Mini's. -
That says it all. Thank you so much for replying to this thread with such a great point of view. You don't need much more proof than that... that a 2.4Ghz CPU can out do a 3+Ghz CPU from another company. It's for this reason alone that I bought myself the Athlon64 3000+. And I've never had any of these problems like loud noises and stuff like other people have mentioned. It's done a great job for my purposes so far... and I have no plans to ever switch over to Intel.I'm happy to see the poll has turned back around and AMD now has more votes.
