What Is Your Position On Gun Control ?
MajesticTreeFrog replied to Jguy101's topic in General Discussion
Or, the guy may have seen it and not done anything. OR, he may have waited to take it, and then he would have been in an even worse position. I am not saying anything for or against here, just pointing out that things can cut both ways. The vast vast majority of drugs do not send people on kill rampages. Those that do(pcp) only do it in a very small percentage of the population who just happen to react strangely. A person who is freaking out like this is probably not a continual user, ie addict, because this behavior would have gotten them noticed. I am sure there are exceptions, but the point is that this is a weird weird scenario and not a good test for or against gun control simply because of its low statistical relevance vis a vis crime and the need for arms in general. In any case, some crazy person out to kill you is really the least of your worries. Usually it is very very sane people out to kill/mug/rape/whatever. (If you can call that sane) These people, if you have a gun, are likely to do one of two things: A ignore you and look for an easier target, or B Kill you immediately instead of just threaten/beat up. So, granted that with option A(the most likely) you are better off, the B option is extremely bad. Also, the more guns people are carrying, the easier it is to steal one and have an unregistered gun floating around. Which is also very very bad. The overall point is that everything here is a huge balancing act with potentially many unintended consequences, especially over time. Simplistic stuff like PCP crazies are completely irrelevant. If you want to have a real discussion, check out the effects on crime with open carry laws and how they change over time. The effect is very similar to the war on drugs(ie works in the beginning, then crime evolves and is either the same or outright violent:see option . Most sane gun control people differentiate between handguns(concealable and generally good for shooting people) and rifles which are less concealable and have the relevant range to be good for hunting. The sane gun control people only want controls on handguns and things like machine guns and assault rifles, which have no real civilian use other than collections. -
Mac / Windows: Whats The Best ?
MajesticTreeFrog replied to kc8yff's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Slower is an understatement. Macs can emulate a PC much faster than vice versa(yay risc architecture). Think 1/10th speed if you are VERY lucky. Installing OSX can take 10 hours emulated. On my laptop it takes 2 hours to install windows with an emulator(Guest PC). -
Colaborative Tutorials
MajesticTreeFrog replied to MajesticTreeFrog's topic in Graphics, Design & Animation
We would need opaque's approval, possibly even his active aid, to set it up.As for crediting posts, there are two ways:Adding approved posts(posts moderated as helpful, much like how we already do tutorials) would count as normal. Edits(such as clarity and organization) that are approved may have to be set up so that moderators choose how helpfull the edit is and assign points manually. I am open to suggestions. -

The thing I am talking about is a wiki. Forum posts quickly get jumbled. So, the issue would be setting up a wiki section at Xisto. -
Catholicism Vs. Christianity How do they differ?
MajesticTreeFrog replied to linzy's topic in General Discussion
While to some extent I agree Brain, You CAN compare catholic beliefs to 'mainstream protestantism' or even 'evangelical protestantism'. While denominations differ in certain aspects of theology, they also agree on much more, which is why they are all Christian and are all protestant. -
Catholicism Vs. Christianity How do they differ?
MajesticTreeFrog replied to linzy's topic in General Discussion
Actually, its more than that Siddharthacomplex. Catholic doctrine involves more than just the bible. This is actually part of the split between the protestant denominations and the catholic church. The protestant denominations only accept the bible as a source of God's message(or really, their interpretation of the bible). Catholics on the other hand have a 'living tradition' in the form of the papacy and centuries of papal writings and the writings of saints such as St. Augustine.Hilariously enough, much of protestant doctrine actually comes from such catholic saints and such. These views are then justified, sometimes with great difficulty, into protestant theologies. -
Ok, Since many here are wanting to learn to use certain programs, and others already know how, I think it would be good to put together a set of community tutorials for the major packages out there like photoshop, flash, etc.I personally know photoshop, and I would like to learn flash.

Which Linux? Which Linux is the best in your view?
MajesticTreeFrog replied to cerion's topic in Websites and Web Designing
A new version of Ubuntu is supposed to come out in about 2 days. It looks pretty awesome. People who are new to linux or like debian should check it out. -
Does that mean that a severly crippled person(who cannot do everything a normal human can do, not even close) is not human? What if the robots become better than us? It seems unlikely now, but realize that robotics has come from nothing to the latest honda prototype in less than 100 years. Far far less than the millions that occured during natural evolution. Even if you refuse to accept evolution, it is important to realize that the rate of improvement is astounding. Given another 100 years, it would not be surprising if robots were nearing natural human ability (or even exceeding it). Incorrect. A person can program a computer to do math many times better than the source human could. Power is not a single variable. The human has the ability to program, the computer has the ability to do computation. However, programming is a more abstract form of computation. So don't be so sure about how the scales will always balance. This is somewhat false. Most AIs are indeed domain specific. However, so are most parts of the human brain. The different parts of the brain handle their indivifual domains and report to one another. AIs can be made to do the same thing. You can develop a learning/automated program to handle specific domains and then have a final AI whose domain is the info being reported to it from the other subsystems.

The advantage of Firefox is that anyone can fix an exploit. People aren't dependant on Microsoft or anyone else to fix stuff. This means that patches often happen very fast. Also, some things aren't exploitable, as far as anyone knows. Such as OpenBSD. No remote exploits found for something like 10 years. But then again, security is sort of the most important thing in the universe to that group.

Actually, they do allow you to use pictures in you email. As for how they do it, realize that only a very very small percentage of users actually takes up the 1gig, much less the two. 1 or 2 gigs for email is more or less infinite space given typical usage. So, google only HAS to have some smaller percentage of that space available, plus say 50% overhead just in case. Also, hard drive and storage costs have fallen like crazy the last few years. For a corp the size of google, while its still expensive I am sure, its still not THAT expensive to provide this space.

so, what was wrong with Yahoo? I never did get to hear that story.

Catholicism Vs. Christianity How do they differ?
MajesticTreeFrog replied to linzy's topic in General Discussion
Historically it does. The catholics were the first christians. Then the protestants split off, and then split into more groups. If one of the two groups is going to be referred to as anything other than christian, it should be the protestant groups. There are other reasons as well. The catholic church has a consistent doctrine and theology whereas there are something like 10,000 forms of protestantism. Why should the 10,000 groups be referred to as christian when the first christans are not? That doesn't make sense at all. The best name for this topic would be Catholics vs Protestants. -
the place to find and get anime is http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ to releases. Check it daily. For backlog stuff, you will need to get on irc. Go download mIRC (http://www.mirc.com/) and then connect to irc.rizon.netOn baka-updates you can find most group's IRC channel. Many/most are on rizon these days. Use /j #groupchannelname to jointhen use either !list to see a list of servers or xdcc list. Be careful though, some groups don't like people using xdcc list, and may kick/ban you if you use it. So check first.Let me know if that helps.

My understanding is that the Catholic church married men long long ago. Also, if his intentions are to keep sin out of marriage, then why does the bible tolerate wife abuse(tolerate is a bit weak, it comes to the verge of encouraging it), treating women as property, and the sacrifice of children? Or what about the parts involving the killing of cities and peoples? For God so loved THE WORLD... You biblical quote does not back up your words. At the same time, the point of referring to animal homosexuality is to show that god DID put homosexuality into the world, since animals are not moral creatures like man(according to christianity). Considering that people, even highly trained priests versed in the source languages have been arguing over exactly that for centuries, you are clearly wrong. Not to mention how arrogant it is to assume that you know the wishes of a supreme being. You are at least as much in error like this as anyone else. Follow your own advice.

As I said in another debate, proof is an imaginary concept outside of mathematics. There is no proof, only disproof and/or the preponderance of evidence. There is plenty to debate about those with regards to religion.

Catholicism Vs. Christianity How do they differ?
MajesticTreeFrog replied to linzy's topic in General Discussion
OK. The title of this post is wrong. CATHOLICS ARE CHRISTIANS. Period. They were the FIRST christians. if anything, it should be Christians vs. Protestants as it makes a lot more sense. Sigh. -
There is a difference between death and brain death. With brain death, only the brain is dead/destroyed/non-functioning. The rest of the body works. In Terri's case, it was her cerebral cortex that was gone. The cerebral cortex handles all higher thought, personality, etc. Other parts of the brain and nervous system handle all involuntary reflexes so on. The twitching and blinking and stuff that Terri did was COMPLETELY NORMAL for a person who is brain dead in the way she was. Textbook even. I do not say this lightly, my Aunt had MS and went brain dead and they had to "pull the plug" on her. Fact of the matter is, Terri was dead, just like my aunt. That she still twitched/breathed/etc is just more unfortunate because it makes it harder to accept.

Ok, I have decided to get a domain, but I would like to get some advice on which registrar/service to use. Are there any real differences between the services like aplus, godaddy, and network solutions?

Catholicism Argements for and against
MajesticTreeFrog replied to thermoid's topic in General Discussion
How is this topic different from one about general christianity? Or are you just asking for pro/cons as compared to protestantism? -
Actually, there is only one Theravada Buddhism. However, there are certain subtraditions, but these aren't as different as say, forms of Mahayana buddhism. It is closer to the subschools of Tibetan. Same tradition/views but slightly different focuses or host cultures.

Well, I have known a few wiccans. They seem to come in two classes: Class 1: "Like, Witchcraft is cool. I love all the candles and spells and stuff. And it really pisses your parents off and you get to wear these cool black clothes and stuff." This is the Teen Wanna Witch. Zero depth, very annoying, will threaten to curse you with her powerful and ancient spells. The male version(Warlock) of a type 1 also wears black, but is less about cursing and more about getting laid with the hot Type 1 witch girls. Class 2: Class 2 doesn't get a quote. They are usually quiet about their views, liberal in overall outlook, and generally all around nice(exceptions exist). Basically, Class 2 gets a bad name from all the ditzy Class 1s that think wearing black and a pentacle makes one a witch(or gets one laid).

Well, a person doesn't NEED religion, but it will always exist. The real options involve which religions to have around. In a void of religion, if a person is in pain/doubt/etc they are looking for something to make them feel better. To give them meaning. Religion does this. If there were no large religions, we would have cults that would spring up, usually just to take advantage of those people's grief and hurt them more. The advantage of big/old relgions is that they have a harder time being purely profit based. The problem with big/old religions is that they still CAN be profit based or cause fanaticism and violence. It is not "Religion" per say but the specific beliefs found in those religions that cause this problem. Specifically, these are the traits that I have noticed that allow a religion to be a cause/excuse for murder, violence and general corruption:1. Demands of faith and obediance to Church hierarchy/officials2. Legal obligations towards clergy/mandatory tithing(leads to corruption)3. Allowing/encouraging religious leaders to have governmental power4. Ambiguity with regards to the importance of scriptural passages. (this allows a sect to pick a sentence and say "A HAH! This is what the truth is! And just run with it, even if it doesn't make sense from another viewpoint")5. The concept of "infallibility" in regards to either officials or doctrine6. Doctine that makes factual claims that are unnecessary/arbitrary(mainly in relation to #5. It makes even small discrepancies a major threat to the faith, and thus provokes a major reaction).7."Mysteries", "Higher secrets" and so on. Allows the higher ups to pretend special knowledge. Aids corruption.8. Being a "Revealed" Religion. Similar to 7. A Revlealed religion is one in which ONLY the founder/prophet "knows" what is going on. Beliefs that are untestable by everyone.Having one, or more of these does not automatically make a religion/cult corrupt and/or violent, it just ups the chances. The more of these properties that exist the more likely/easily the religion/cult or subset of a religion is to be a "problem".Also, religion has more upsides than the above poster may realize. In addition to morality/comfort, it has some usefull social dimensions. One is that religious services allows people to meet and interact that may not normally. This helps keep society from becoming too stratified. The rich meet and the poor and see they are human and vice versa. Workers from different fields, people from different generations, etc. Of course, a religion that actively stratifies people loses these benefits. IE: it is pretty worthless.
