P2P programs(merged) What P2P program are you using?
MajesticTreeFrog replied to prolifik's topic in Computer Networks
Which networks do these connect to? Gnutella? -
Last thing I read said that ipod(+ipod mini) had more like 70%(either cnet or some other tech site). The reason people like the ipod is 1. It looks nice and is trendy. 2. It has fantastic sound and good earphones. 3. It is increadibly easy to use and intuitive. 4. It has lots of nifty accessories. Some other players have similar specs, sometimes for slightly less money. But people see the ipod as a trendy thing, and people are willing to spend money on 'trendy'. Also, the nice ease of use is something many people care about. Also, I noticed a lot of companies putting out stuff about the nice features that it comes with, like wma support. Frankly(to go on a rant real quick) nobody cares about wma. Claims of stuff like 'compatible with the most online stores!'. Of course, except for the main one(itunes). Anyway, the reason people buy apple is for the combination of all of the above reasons, and because no company has as of yet produced anything as good(overall). The big thing I notice is generally ugly players, that have bad interfaces and that usually have not so hot programs for using them. What I want, is a company to come out with a player that is 20 or 40gb, has just as good sound quality(claims of better I have a hard time buying, my understanding is that the big ipod and the ipod shuffle have perfectly flat frequency response curves.(pcworld or pcmag, can't remember which one). You *cannot* get better than that. The only thing you can do is get better headphones for playback), just as easy to use, looks better(get rid of the chrome backing or go all chrome), has ogg vorbis playback, comes with a program to break all known stupid DRM schemes(aint gonna happen), supports one lossless codec(preferably an open one, but once its lossless it doesn't matter as much, since conversion doesn't introduce quality loss), is smaller than the current ipod(like, a largish cellphone maybe), and has similar pheriphal support. It should also be readable on any OS(for windows it should use a good program for access and then use some other filesystem than the ones that windows natively recognizes, since none of them are that good.).

Is there a good site that teaches how to use CSS? I would really like to master it.

I personally like Martial arts and Fencing. I have never been one for team sports. However, my friends like american football(because they are american(I am too, just strange)). They have a lot of fun and talk about stuff that I have no clue about. I mainly hang around beacuse they act like monkeys and give me free beer.

I didn't say that giant/Microsoft anti-spyware sucked, I said you should ALSO run adaware and spybot. I agree that the giant one gets more than the others, but the other two STILL get some that giant doesn't. So, to help guanantee that you get everything, you should run all three. I use windows on my PC, because I like it more than linux, and this is what I do, for the reasons stated above. So, no, I am not absolutely wrong, you just aren't reading my posts. And, since you requested it, Reasons why I Dislike(not hate) windows, and similar list for linux. In addition, I have listed why I like certain platforms, because I feel that one should do that. This way we can both be happy. Windows: XP registration sillyness. Bad security setup(you are correct that if you are carefull, don't click on bad attachments and so on, you won't have too much of a problem. However, I feel you shouldn't have to worry about it. I also feel that microsoft has had long enough to make this not an issue at all, and they haven't, at least to my satisfaction). Still: comes with ports left open, bad user management for handling programs and such(partly a creation of third parties. Windows on the other hand makes it easy to build in such problems). Assorted useability/niceness stuff: Having to defrag disks(new filesystems exist which don't have this issue. You should be able to use them). Bad/useless help(not always, but at least for me, most of the time). Often requires third party tools to fix problems(you shouldn't need any of the anti-spyware things discussed. OR it should come with a solution for these problems built in. Maybe microsoft will do this in the future). And there is more, but that is a good enough amount. If they fixed it all that would probably be enough. Things I like: Lots of software, some of it good. Most of the good stuff is expensive(more than $50). Linux: Things I do not like: Almost all useability. Abysmal UI design for KDE and to a lesser extent gnome. Had to setup(compared to other consumer OS's), requiring a lot of knowledge(USB should never have issues, but it does sometimes). Still requires use of the command line(yes I know some people like it, but I don't, and I feel that there are faster ways of doing just about any of the things you need a command line for, perhaps linux users just aren't aware of them/haven't built them yet). It comes with lots and lots of software, providing lots and lots of choices except the one I really want to make: not to have to deal with sorting it all out. This is slowly being improved. I look forward to it. The best thing In the world would be linux becoming as nice as windows or even...mac os, in terms of useability. Lack of commercial software as good as that which is available for mac and windows. It has lots of 'replacements' but these are rarely as nice as the other versions. Things I like: Much of the above can partly be excused because it is free. You get what you pay for. (Pay-for OS's have no excuse. Especially windows, they jave had....9 years to get the 9x-Nt based OS's right, and approx. one metric ton of money to do it with) It is open source, which I like from a philosophical standpoint. It is low on (software level) bugs. MacOS X Things I dislike: Lower availability of software compared to windows. This is low however because the things that do exist are all very very good, so I find I simply do not need all the random bits I did on windows. Small UI things: I could write a paper on this. However, they are all *very* minor. I only notice because I studied ergo in college, and its something I pay a lot of attention to (as you may have noticed). If you really want to read a nitpicky speil on this, just pm me. Only runs on PPC stuff. I hope some day Apple changes this. It is overpriced(though they do make up for it at least some what with bundled software, and the hardware is of excellent quality). Things I like: Excellent UI design. Except for small things, gets basically everything right. Partly because of: Excellent underlying software architexture. Cocoa and other such tech allows easy, stable, feature rich while easy to use(due to Apple's human interface guidelines) Strong, robust, software that works like magic. The "it just works" effect with the hardware I plug in. Open, as compared to windows(though not as much as linux, maybe someday.....well, one can hope(not gonna happen). Access to linux/unix software(though it takes more work than it should. Apple should improve this.) Finally, it is stable, relatively secure, and has an excellent security model out of the box with its rootless mode(though it should have the firewall enabled by default. Granted, it doesn't need this as much since most all ports are off anyway).

Why A Site Is Viewed Differently In Browsers
MajesticTreeFrog replied to danagym's topic in Websites and Web Designing
If you use dreamweaver, it adds some code to help make things look the same in different browsers. Even if some of the other code it generates isn't always perfect, these snippits are. Basically, it adds some stuff to make IE handle stuff correctly, and then a second hack to let the other browsers do so as well. In any case things like Dreamweaver just make life faster. I like DW MX 2004 because it has lots of nice code snippits. -

Try Tristania, you might like that as well. If you can't find em online, try http://blogs.allofmp3.ru/ That site is usefull for trying out/quickly finding music(even though it costs a bit of money). If you don't feel like going that way, see if amazon has short clips(I don't like these because the quality drop is so bad that it is hard to know if you will actually like/dislike the band). -
How to Reduce Spams Let us help fight spams.
MajesticTreeFrog replied to iGuest's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Hey Nilsc, Is there a way to set something like this up for our posts on the forum here? Like, putting a honeypot email in our sig somehow so that evil bots that hit this forum can be blacklisted? -
Chill qwil, nobody is gonna shut bittorrent down. They can't. What they can do is shut down all the servers hosting copyright infringing tracker servers. As for your argument about music sales, this is true, but this isn't the real reason the RIAA is so terrified. The studios exist as distribution. They were once necessary because of the huge expense of creating, pressing, and distributing music. Now, a 1000 dollar computer can handle what once cost half a million to do. And pressing CDs is less necessary with household cd burners being plentiful. So, the last reason they exist is distribution. THAT is why they are so scared of p2p. If it succeeds, the artists won't need the labels anymore, and they will die.

There may also be a game developers group if you live in a tech city(like I do). If you go there you can get tips from the pros. I live in Raliegh, and so my developer friend was able to go and have so beers with one of the makers of Unreal. Not only that, but those people make great job contacts. If you haven't done so already, go and see if there is anything like that near you.

The best way to make me(and the others) shut up is to ignore us, not post flamebait. Also, while you said you run microsoft anti-spyware you should also run adaware and spybot search and destroy. They see ones that Microsoft does not. If you like mirosoft, fine. Great. But just as you disagree with us, we disagree with you. Instead of posting stuff meant to be incensing, post reasons why YOU like them, as opposed to just why others are wrong. THAT is what makes it flamebait. Also, If you are gonna lower my reputation, at least know what you are talking about. You said I don't like free speach unless you like linux. This isn't true, since *I* don't like linux. Don't be so immature.

How Do I Make A RPG Battle System? final fantasy style
MajesticTreeFrog replied to lacking_imagination's topic in Programming
um, lets see, go learn C++ and opengl. At that point the rest should be rather obvious, either in terms of execution or in terms of the next step. Warning: this will be time consuming. You might also try python. Its very easy to learn, but I don't know how suited it is to gamemaking. Probably good enough....so go learn that instead of C if this is all you plan to do. -

Which is why useability classes should be A. Fun and interesting, because they can be, and B. required, and even a large part of the curriculum. However, I say this as a person who studied ergo in college and liked the idea. You are correct though in that somehow people who teach ergo don't exactly practice it. As for these linux OSX desktop clones. Where can I find them????? I am MOST interested. This would allow we to turn my x86 box into something nice to use. -
Now I see! How blind I was before! My silly pursuit of quality, stability, security and useability has been in vain. Now I see how useless it all is in the face of the possible release of a game for me to waste my time on, some unknown years in the future!(6 if like the last time) I have no idea what IE has to do with it, but I was wrong! All the viruses and spyware, all the crashes, reformats, and assorted glitches are nothing in the face of being able to run some games that don't exist yet because I have nothing better to do with my time! Not to mention all nifty upgrades I can spend my money on, and time on, in order to keep ahead of windows bloat! How would I fill my time without those wonderfull things! [/end sarcasm] Fine. Just post your IP, and a message explicitly allowing people to hack your machine 'if they can'. I wouldn't suggest it though.

You know that admitting that you have a problem is the first step. We are here for you. Now you can get help. https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/?utm_source=getfirefox-com&utm_medium=referral Come into the light! That being said, the site does indeed seem to be down. -
KDE seems better because it is closer to windows than gnome, in ways both good and bad. I like gnome more because it strikes me as having better human interface guidelines. It needs some more work, but long term those guidelines will make it easier to reach the ideal: mac like useability or better. KDE will have to change and basically...not KDE anymore in order to get that good. That said, both of them have a long long way to go.

Your first point is correct, but the comment about windows is about the 'platform'. Windows isn't any better innately for gaming than MacOS or linux(unless you really care about directX). That was the point I was making. Arguing technical merits, windows just sucks. -
Indeed, I looked it up. Cryptozoology is the study of animals that don't exist. That guy and the website he is on just lost all possible 'legitimate' points.

The Meaning Of Life An philosophy discussion
MajesticTreeFrog replied to hast-webben's topic in General Discussion
Is it actually hate? or are we just used to that pairing via socialization? My psych studies say that it is the later, and I have no reason to think that research was wrong. Is hate really all that different from love? They are both strong emotions. They both exhibit a strong sense of craving, in one case for the good of another and in the other case for the bad. I actually think they are not so opposite, but are instead very similar. That one is good and the other is bad doesn't change that. -

I think, as an OS, Mac OSX wins hands down. As a 'platform' it is less clear because of hardware reasons. Now, if only linux users would start learning and copying the mac instead of MS. Personally, while I love my mac, for a lot of reasons I feel that linux or something like it needs to become 'the' OS. BUT, it needs to do it by being the most user friendly and powerfull OS(linux has nothing even close to cocoa AFAIK). This will only happen when someone outside of programers is allowed to call the shots. Programers write dandy code, but the suck at useability, they suck bad.
