  1. Actually, it works EXACTLY the same way. Genes determing whether one is gay or not, is not 'owning your life', simply who one wants to have sex/long term cohabitation with. You have total control of your life? No, you have some control of your life. You don't get to choose whether or not you are a girl or boy, black/white/native american/asian, your hair or eye color. So, question to you: If someone cannot be born gay, does that mean that everyone to you is born heterosexual? Or is it that one is born androgenous, with no tendency towards one sex? In any case, show me a shred of evidence that you are correct.
  2. So, its called not unix, but is so close that it is almost identical, even in file structure, to such an extent that source is so compatible? Hmm, if it looks like unix, works like unix, and runs tho same software as unix..... As for GNU, that is what stands for GNU IS NOT UNIX, as opposed to 'GNU/linux' which is richard stallman's weird politic way of refering to the linux OS. I understand GNU was created that way partially as a joke, and partially to make sure nobody got sued. Linux was an entirely different project, and was INDEED an attempt to make a unix-like OS.
  3. For those of you wishing to try out linux, here is a review of different 'live cds' http://www.osnews.com/story/9569 Live cds allow you to run linux without installing it on your hard drive, to try it out.
  4. Actually, its more like windows------------>mac-->linux. It is a common misconception that macs only use one button. They can use many. I understand one reason they do this is to make software developers do a better job on their interface, and not overload the second mouse button. Speaking from experience, this has worked well. As for control, realize that OSX is built on unix, which linux was made to be a version of(it has since changed a bit). So, linux and Mac OS are very similar. So similar in fact, that you can run linux software on a Mac.
  5. Anyone remember the turbo graphix 16? It failed over here but did increadibly well in japan. It had some fantastic games too. So sad to see it go.
  6. Genes affect physical appearance, intelligence, emotional traits, and just about everthing else. Also there is not a 'homosexual gene'. It is clear that multiple genes are involved, as well as some degree of environmental influence (which is why there is a continuum of homosexuality, not just on/off). For males the 'on/off' modes are more destinct, but the continuum still exists, which is why there are bisexual males. As for homosexuality, identical twins, even raised apart, are still usually bout hetero or both homosexual, which shows that there IS a genetic component. As for the rest, the environmental factors, that is pretty clearly not a conscious choice on anyone's part. For a similar thing, consider intelligence. Intelligence is GREATLY influenced by many genes(there is no single smart/stupid gene). However, exposure to intellectually stimulating and varied experiences during early childhood increases final overall intelligence. Intelligence is influenced by genes, as well as by environment, but is clearly not a conscious choice (or else we would all be 'Einstiens'). Now, if you don't think genes have anything to do with intelligence, then we have nothing more to say to each other, except that I think you need to go take a basic biology/genetics course. If, on the other hand, you DO think genes have something to do with intelligence, then you should realize that homosexuality can and does work the same way.
  7. Actually, you do. But at birth is sort of irrelevant, as all of these things only come up during puberty. In any case, the human brain is wired to recognize the two sexes as different. You can be born gay, or at least be born with genetics that make future homosexuality very likely. As someone said, yes, I think we should just recognize the love and honor it. Good relationships are good relationships.
  8. In the US, yes, as all things are copywriten as soon as they are created here, whether or not you register them. Registering them just allows for increased legal protection. I have no idea how similar the UK is to the US in this regard though.
  9. On that note, I am a capable artist so if people need that I am willing to help out and do graphics for your site.
  10. By the way, reading a review of distro's today, I suggest you go with ubuntu. It is apparently very good at autoconfigure and setting up a clean, user friendly desktop. http://www.ubuntu.com/
  11. Good to know, since copywright issues are causing lots of problems on the net right now. I for one think these laws need to be changed, but that is just me.
  12. Well, you could look at it my way, because while I don't share his angst, I do feel that we are on our own(or at least that there is no god). My way of seeing it is that if we ARE here by ourselves (barring aliens), then that means that any problems that exist are human, or natural in scale. That means they can be solved by humans as well. We might be all alone, but we are more than enough by ourselves.
  13. Wouldn't matter if that happened, because the human would have no one to breed with. This is part of why evolution happens more slowly than that.
  14. Makes sure all the drivers are set up correctly, and make sure you have installed all updates/patches on UT2k4. Try running dxdiag and run the tests to see if anything isn't correctly installed/is broken.
  15. Just remember that Mega pixels isn't all there is to picture quality. you can get lower MP cameras that look sharper because they have better CCDs and color accuracy.
  16. ipod support is still lacking, sadly. As for itunes, you could run it in a windows emulator, but that would probably be far too much effort. Realistically, you should use one of the linux based music players/managers, of which I know there are plenty. The one I have dealt with the most is XMMS, which is most like winamp. Others can certainly give you better advice on that front. As for drag/dropping most of your files, if linux is set up correctly then yes, you should be able to copy most things over that way. However, once again you will need new programs to access them. For your MS office files(assuming you use office), you want openoffice.org. For photoshop, the closest linux comes is the GIMP. Finally, for movie watching, I use VLC, though mplayer is another big favorite. Both will play DVDs as well as all the other video formats. To be frank, this WILL be a terrifying experience, and I suggest you keep asking questions to knowledgeable people like qwiljibow or better yet, find a knowledgeable linux user in RL that you can abuse for help in the initial transition. Linux has a high learning curve, so make sure to go in knowing that, and be willing to put in the time.
  17. Actually, to a very great extent, you are. Or at least, you are born with homosexual tendencies. The strength of these tendencies is heavily influenced by genetics, and then by environmental factors. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ To be clear, there are both genetic and psychological aspects to homosexuality, in addition to possible environmental factors that may affect the expression of certian hormones at important developmental stages. What is clear, is that homosexuality is not a sudden 'choice' by those who are gay (or at least not for the vast, vast majority of them) What specific roles these factors play, and their relative strengths, is still unknown.
  18. I disagree, I think Kerry would have been better, but that does not necessarily mean good. The problem with the democats is that they campaign on being not-republicans, as opposed to actually standing for/advocating an actual world view/solution/etc. So, those who fall on the liberal side of the spectrum (not just the insane left wing nutso people) must sigh and vote for whatever comes up on that side. This is why the 2 party dominant system sucks, in my opinion, 2 choices isn't enough. Because realistically, I don't want any of em in office.
  19. Actually, homosexual behavior does occur in nature. Not only that, but many other things as well. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ My understanding is that homosexuality, for males, is very genetic in nature. It is CERTAINLY not because they are shy and cannot face women. My friends who are gay don't even have interest in women, it is not that they find them 'challenging' or 'frightening'. In fact, many of them have had sexual encounters with women, in order to stay in the closet earlier in life (and knowing those women, I understand they are rather good lovers to boot). oh, and here is an article by national geographic. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Nor is homosexuality a 'disease', caused by germs or any such thing. Nor is it 'catchable' the way a disease/virus is. Homosexuality exists on a continuum, with absolute heterosexuality on one end, and absolute homosexuality on the other. Like any range, there are many spots in between. Some people 'experiment' and have tried same-sex behavior. Hetero/homosexuality appears to be less hard wired (as in, more in-between), for women than for males, for apparently genetic reasons (as in some of the stronger genes involved are on the Y chromosome).
  20. Indeed, AMD is my current favorite for processors. I wish apple could hook up with them and get their help along with IBM and Motorola to build the PPC processors they use.
  21. No, you wanna move to 64 bit. That is where everything is going. Buying 32bit is buying old tech. If you were buying a laptop, that would be fine. But don't get a 32 bit processor for a desktop.
  22. I am not saying it is not a big difference. That is why creatures look so different. However, similar DNA is evidence for evolution because it strongly suggests common ancestry.
  23. Yay for rants and a lack of any persuasive arguments, points, discussion, or anything of the type.To Kara, if you think the 'liberals' hate bush because he believes in god, you should note that so does clinton. You may not like the criticisms here, and indeed many are rather short, but saying that criticising bush is inherently evil or wrong is equally, if not more, absurd.
  24. Another overlooked piece of web design is to keep it as simple as possible. Figure out the way to arrange and divide sections so that it is easy to find what you are looking for. Avoid things looking 'noisy'. Which generally means keeping things large and clear, using desaturated colors, with good but not extreme contrast.
  25. The idea you are thinking of is security by obscurity, in that windows would ahve an advantage by being an unknown, in terms of code. It only works when things are acutally obscure, which windows isn't, and hasn't been for a long time. As for linux/unix, cracking a server running one of those os's(which most are) is worth a lot more than cracking a random home PC. For one, they are used on corporate webservers and such, and you would have access to so so much more than even a few dozen home PCs(not to mention the bragging rights). Furthermore, OpenBSD is legit. It doesn't have holes. That is what it exists for, to be secure. Or, you could ask the NSA. What do they put out: Security enhanced linux. A version of linux designed to be like openBSD, to minimize POTENTIAL hacks, including hacks not yet known. If the NSA is willing to say its good, then I am betting they are correct.
