  1. Probably as swap. But you can't use pen drive as swap, why? Because pendrive is flash media and flash media can only stand a thousand write or so. Using it as swap will greatly reduces it's life.
  2. They have plus and pro version that I have never looked into, but they now support linux and that's excellent! It worked flawlessly under ubuntu linux and probably alot of other distros. It's programmed under QT and I'm quite sure it doesn't use wine like piasca. I didn't crash on me yet. Google really know how to make the users happy!
  3. Well, 6.10 is named Edgy Eft. [quote name='http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ things first. The codename of Dapper+1 will be: The Edgy Eft And here's why. Edgy is all about cutting edge, perhaps bleeding edge, brand new code and infrastructure. It will be the right time to bring in some seriously interesting but definitely edgy new technologies which lay the groundwork for the next wave of Ubuntu development. An Eft is a youthful newt, going through its first exploration of the rocky territory just outside the stream. And that's exactly what we hope the development team will do with Ubuntu during the Edgy cycle - explore slightly unfamiliar and uncharted territory that is perhaps a little out of the mainstream. But I think I WILL be stable. It's just the opensource versioning and stableness is more "strict" than proprietry software. Often, beta opensource software is stable enough for microsoft to release it if microsoft to developed it.
  4. My guess is that MS doesn't have any creativity right now and they just want to copy OSX for the look and feel, I know that they are better than this in the older day, but now NO! IE7 copies Firefox and now MS Office 12 copy the OSX look & feel. If I remembered correctly, Microsoft refuses to use ODF (Open Document Format) probably because switching office programs will be easier. Openoffice.org now uses ODF as the standard file format, and other programs probably will.
  5. Probably setup an email account in your Cpanel and use that as your login, or you can just try localhost first to see if it can send some mails. As I see you aren't hosted, get hosted and see what the Cpanel has to offer you and help you do most things you want to your hosting account!
  6. Drupal is a CMS and Rails is a framework. Rails is a very good framework for ruby. At first you might not like it, but when you get used to it, you'll never want to program in php again if you have that choice. You don't need to spend time writing SQL queries, SQL connection, Template Engine, etc. All you just need to do is to write a short code and the template. It got built-in prototype, scriptaculous. But the fact that most hosting don't support rubyonrails stop it from being widespread. Try Cakephp, a rails inspired framework for php. It isn't as good as rails, but it can help me code alot faster.
  7. The fact is that Ubuntu 6.10 will be a kind-of bleeding edge release, that's why they made 6.06 Long Term Support! Every distro got to have something new at some point right? Anyone aiming for stableness should not upgrade to 6.10 but wait for the next version beyond 6.10 All updates will be available so no fear your computer will be outdated. I'll definitely upgrade to 6.10 BEFORE it's released, I loved the bleeding-edge!
  8. Can you reinstall windows? If you can't, ask the person you bought the computer with to reinstall windows for you WITHOUT Norton or McAfee. It's kind of funny actually, who would want to install both Norton of McAfee as both slows down your computer alot. You can use Avast free anti-virus instead, it uses less resource on your system, you will feel speed improvement. Another method is to disable each anti-virus software (each should have an option to do so).
  9. Maybe you can try to create another email account to see if that other one is usable. If it is use that one instead (name it webmaster or something). I've been hosted with Xisto before and I don't have any mail problem. I havn't been hosted with Xisto yet but is the address automatically created? I don't remember it does.
  10. Ubuntu is really good. I'm not a linux newbie but I still use it since it have the "apt-get" and some user-friendly ness, I mean who want to be on the expert-mode all the time. I can easily reinstall if I mess something up. I'm using ubuntu Dapper Drake right now with Compiz and XGL server. I combined the Vista and OSX themes. Now it looks really great. It looks different. My friend looked at it and didn't realize it isn't windows, he asked me if I can install the eye-candy on his windows XP! I'm still convincing him to switch to linux but he just won't because he thinks linux is very hard seeing I'm on the commandline. I'm looking forward to Edgy Etch (6.10) which will contain bleeding-edge softwares (probably incl. XGL). This is a screenshot of my desktop: here And here is the cube effect: here
  11. You'll just need to register at cjb. Cjb don't let you use your dns but instead uses it's own dns to provide redirection/masking. So it won't point to your ip address, but you just need to put the url to your account on your server in the website address field.
  12. Well, google robot regularly and smartly indexes sites. Google have a very unique algorithm to tell which website suppose to come first. Google also change it's result based on the country it's accessed from (or the language the user browses in). So a person from england can see mostly english website first and a person from thailand can see some thai website. Google is a big service now providing other stuff using your "Google Account" known as "Personalized Homepage" where I can add content of my "regularly browsed" site like slashdot or lxer (basically any site with a feed) in it. Ask.com does have a very good design indeed. But people focuses on results when using a search engine!
  13. Opaque is usually on the live chat on Xisto - Web Hosting
  14. I don't like the new media players from the beginning. It eats up resources I use Media Player Classic to play musics. I doesn't eat up much resource. I mean, if I open up windows media player, Other programs became slower especially if I'm compiling a project in background.I don't think media player need nice skin or effects. It need to be simple. Most people listen to music in background while doing something else.
  15. It's a 28-0-1 vote right nowI know HTML some CSS and just enough PHP to program a quick n dirty joomla-ipb registration integration. Why is it a 28-0-1 vote? Some guy that doesn't know HTML doesn't come to this section of the forum!
