At school I get to sleep at 11:30 PM usually, and then have to wake up at 7 AM, so thats 7 1/2 hours, at home at go to sleep at 1:30AM get up at 10 AM, so alot longer than at school...and I feel more tired! Very strange, but there is an example of two routines...quite hard to change between them, so with 1 week left of holdiays, i have to start going to sleep earlier...

That's quite impressive, how on earth...wait...why on earth would you even bother doing such a thing...oh wait, i am being stupid again...IT iS SO COOL!!! I thought I would start this topic to inform newbies to the linux world, or anyone else that is careful before going and switching to an Operating System they have no prior experience in, and to maybe sway some people on this forum to change to a free, community basd O.S based on the linux kernel: GENTOO Here's my story: I am a student in the UK, and I recently received a laptop for my birthday, although I was able to choose it...The fact is that I had a price limit, so I wanted to spend as much as possible on the hardware and tried to avoid paying for software/os's that I knew I could find free replacements for...so naturally, I chose not to buy windows XP with the laptop and opted for a free alternative, linux... Now here comes the fun part: there are over 50 linux distributions that I know of, and the the beauty of the kernel is that anyone can make an OS out of it, therefore the number of OS's based on the linux kernel are constantly growing...SO, I had to choose... Many people opt, with there first ever linux install, to go for what is known as a 'user friendly' distro, i.e. very little text-based configuration...lots of graphical-user-interfaces, and usually this distro is Ubuntu, HOWEVER...being intrigued to learn about the kernel a bit more and generally about the whole 'linux' thing, I opted for a rather less friendly distro, Gentoo, that is after finding out which was going to suit my needs most... And infact, after only TWO attempts, I had a fully working text-based OS, and I was pretty prowd of that, hehe but after that, things really did not get too difficult at all...this was all down to one thing...community help, i.e. forums and irc chat...even a really old thing called putty, which I used to communicate with a gentu guru after my install... Anyway, after installing, there were alot of things left to do, that you would not have to do with a windows based pc, i.e. setting up the display for a GUI, and geting USB ports to mount, and most importantly, getting networking and internet connections to work, which is a must that you are able to download applications directly after your install... ...And right now, I am sitting at my desk, typing to you from my gentoo-run HP Pavilion DV1108EA laptop, and everything I need is up and running... OKAY, that would be great...and should bring in more members, which just helps the community improve...and maybe more importantly may bring in or simply keep people that are experienced with linux and its many distros, and they will be able to helps noobs that may struggle on installs, and program/hardware compatability etc...it would help alot I think.

I think it is time that we have a full linux section under computing, since alot of people are posting stuff to do with linux and it is hard to swim through all the unrelated topics...to find the ones related to this widely used operating system...i think many users would grately appreciate this...thankyou

I use KDE, because I looked at GNOME and decided, KDE was better...quite simple really...although enlightenment.org, when they have released a stable and usable version of E17, will probably be my choice...entrance is my desktop manager of choice, for looks that is...but for useablilty it has to be kdm...although is still cannot work out how to skin it properly...but hey....Anyway, have any of you guys noticed that KDE are working on a new desktop look? It is called PLASMA and the address is plasma.kde.org and it looks excellent...I think that it will be out by NOVEMBER of this year...along with KDE 4 or whatever number they have reached by now...Enlightenment would be really good if a did not keep getting loads of error mesages, and that sort of thing. I think someone needs to make a new one that is perfect and maybe less bloaty then gnome and kde etc...e16 just doesn't cut it for me...and like I have previously mentioned, e17 is not nearly enough stable...

It's quite a qeird way of finding out what a word means but this is how a stumbled accross an ackee... One day about 4 years ago i was at school and my english teacher, who had a huge 12ish volume copy of the Oxford English Dictionary, told the class that if one of us was able to think of a word that we knew the meaning of, aqnd he did not, we would get some sort of edible prize...so my friend said 'an ackee' No-one else knew what the hell this 'ackee' thingy was, and so he got out his dictionary, and he said it was not there and therfor was not a real word... My friend then said it must be a real word becuse it was in the children's pocket dictionary (strangly enough)...so then he checked the APPENDIX B of the dictionary which included words which were introduced, or found out by the dictionary peopel within the last 200 years... Anyway...THE MENING OF ACKEE is as follows... ..

Well at my high school, we have 64 bit athlon prccessors, perfect for DVD's, Image editing, 3d Graphics/Animation, .net Programming, u name it...u know what all 40ish computers are used for, online games, it sucks...atleast some people ahv the sense to use them for their rightful purposes maybe 5 dvds/day and 2/graphics realted thingys, the rest is surfing the net...i am at my HOUSE now surfing on a thin client because i am at bording school....it is really slow and annoying, no CD drive, music etc. just surfing a dn typing...i suppose thats enough for any chemistry prep or history essays lol

i just have a zen touch which i have no trouble putting anything on, until one day my friend tried to put loads on that partition, and the information partition completely f*ck8dup and therefore i do not want to use warranty incase they bugger up everything, including the music....and hopefully there willl come a time when i can format that partition so no more badness can be done on it (pardon the terrible english, i ahve just finished some GCSE's and I am not in the mood to string sentences together...)

yeh, this is true, in fact alot of people actually include a splash-like image on their website through a link saying !presentation! or something like that so that three old splashes do not go unnoticed or unused, otherwise it isemms a waste of time...google is indeed funny about splash pages unless there is good meta underneath...

Word of warning to everyone that is or (may be soon) caught up with get rich quick schemes...dont do it, if u wanna make money online please ust go and design websites for artists, b&b's etc. this is a lot more time efficient, and u can be doing something u like doin rathrer than constantly clicking links, taking surveys, clickin on emails etc...that'll just bore u to death...hope this message sinks in.

yes this is quit clearly a load of carp...and the funny thing is when people say it is a scam, it really isn't, since it explicitly says in its liense agreement, that unless you have a certain amount of referrals u will not get much of ure money....there are similar websites that offer 0.5 cents per email and have $15 cashout, this is more realisticly gonna payout, but believe me , dont even bothre trying these things, u will get bored of them and end up quitting, meaning u hav not earned anything and the webvmaster ends up earning money...wanna make money??? set up one of these sites yourself...it is really worth it.
