Sharing A Partition/drive On Windows Homegroup Network [Solved]

So i have enabled sharing of a couple of my PC's partitions (added Everyone/Guest as read-only), now other computers can view the shared drive (as in D: and E:) but cannot access into the drive...Now when i enable sharing on a Folder (added Everyone/Guest as read-only) they work perfectly fineAre there suppose to be some sort of special treatment for sharing partitions?I do have Avast running and Windows Firewall

Do you mean that you want to share the same partition? the whole c$ or d$ drive? Not only the \data or \movies folder?

@Yordan, He wants to share whole partition and which is quite possible. There may be possibility of some sort of configuration mistake.@manuleka, You did not mention the OS of both the systems. There, may some sort problem while accessing windows 7 shared partition on Windows XP or earlier versions of Windows. So, Please let us know much more about your exact setup to figure out problem and its solution.And as for update currently I am accessing one of partition to my android 4.0 phone using File Explorer Software (Which basically uses samba for this purpose).Since, I was on invigilator duty in examination today. So, was not able to check it out practically in lab after manuleka's post. Actually, we have some old computer having Windows XP installed and some are new with Windows 7 installed and all are in sharing because it is quite not possible for student to have access same system next time.

hey guys,sorry forgot to mention that - OS is Windows 7 (XP seems a bit simpler on folder/drive sharing) which just workout the same... Windows 7 seems a bit different (in my case it does hehe)@ yordan - yes a whole partition... i was expecting it to work just like sharing a folder but it seems not or maybe i'm just missing something??

Yes, definitely sharing on Windows XP is pretty easier than on Windows 7. This is just because of security configurations or setting in windows 7.However, you still not mentioned the OS of second PC. Is it also have Windows 7? Also mention the error that you are getting while accessing the drive.

2nd PCs are Windows 7 and Windows XP and Kubuntu 12.10... the host Computer is Windows 7... all the Client PCs can't access the shared drive but they can access shared folders without an issuei set up both shares (drive and folder) the same way

Ok, fine. Try following process for sharing the partition.

select partition> right click> advance sharing and set the network drive letter and edit the permissions to whom can access it

After, that while accessing it may asked for login credential for host computer. Because, every time when I try to access my shared partition to play songs on my android phone It asks for credentials which is almost based on Samba. And Of- course on kubuntu you are using samba for this as well.

that's exactly what i did... i set permission to read-only on Everyone

Ok, what did you do on all of client machines. I assume you have same workgroup on client and host as you already stated that you are able to access shared folder over there.

Fine, Try after Turning off "Password protection sharing".

 

You can find this setting at "Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings".

already turned off... i also tried disabling firewall/anti-virus (avast) but to no avail

Aha!, Just check Security tab for proper permissions for the Everyone group. It may be possibility that you do not have this group there in security tab.

ah ha... thanks i checked security tab and compare Folder and Drive so i added Everyone to Group or Username for Drive which was missing
