Need A Name....

Recommended Posts

I wasn't sure where to put this, so I have put it here, please move it if there is a better fitting location for it.I know it's probably a bit much to ask help on this considering all, but I am really drawing a blank and need some ideas. So basically, as some of you know I call my site "Chesso's Corner", which is mostly fine, but I really need to come up with something better, not only for the title of the site, but a title to be-fit my software development, web development, among other things.I'm looking to create a well "business name" you could say, that's either a longer title like the one previously mentioned or a shorter one that could have a nice logo to go with it (like a postal service might have a name relating to post and use a logo that also relates to that). So yeah, basically I am really drawing blanks for ideas, I'm hoping to find or come up with something not too definitive in the end (I guess I could compare to the likes of Asus, not very specific but they cover many things of a technical nature under this one name).Anyway, any help or guidance on this matter would be very much greatly appreciated!!!!!

Ah, the good old name game...

Assuming you plan on using "Chesso" as your alter ego (namely as a reference to you in particular), I don't see too much trouble in incorporating it somehow in to the name of your site. I use Mordent as both my username for a whole range of forums and games, as well as for my personal site (http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ - nothing there yet, so don't bother looking ;)).

Generally, I don't use Mordent as a "business" name, simply because I'd rather not have my friends meeting my business clients, and vice versa. The site I'm working on is workmonkey.org, the idea being a nice little place where those I'll affectionately call "type monkeys", "doodle monkeys", "code monkeys" (and so on) can offer their services (remember the idea of giving infinite monkeys a typewriter each, and sooner or later one of them will write a copy of Hamlet?). Note the complete and utter cut between Mordent and the monkey idea.

Anyway, I suppose I'm rambling. My point is that I've always been pretty useless with names, but whenever I try something new I start fresh with whatever I like the sound of first. Don't feel confined by "Chesso" unless you've a reason to do so. ;)

Yeah I started basic with using words like com, soft, tech, and combinations and spelling variations (in the end I would not only have no hope in hell of getting any or a decent domain with those, their too heavily used). But I have made up my mind on one, which someone has taken .com and .net for, one of them is just a crappy search plastered with ads and crap and the other isn't even setup.....Guess I will have to take .org lol, the name I came to uses shortened spelling of my name and well my purpose to a degree (which is software mostly). But then my domain registar decided to play up on me, so I got to wait now lol.

Heh, yeah, you've got to love it when someone's got an absolutely naff page where you want it. workmonkey.com hasn't even got anything to do with monkeys! Damned parked domains. ;)Out of curiousity, other than a few exceptions, anyone know if there are any restrictions on what the TLDs can be used for? .coms seem pretty universal, but what about .org? I seem to remember reading somewhere that it's generally for non-profit organisations? I'm assuming there's not actual law against using a .org (or any other) for purposes other than the norm, but I'm just curious.

Not that I am aware of no, the sucky thing is, the real good ones I wanted (ones that come from my original ideas and using my name even..... darn Christopher, just a common name >_<) were not available period (and most were only used by those sites that basically do nothing what so ever, parking domains is that what they are called?) or only with .org..org is basically the only decent domain I could get a hold of.There was like ComTeck.org I think but I just really don't like the ck part of it, I would have preferred ComTek, ComTec or ComTech but alas they are no good and they are kind of obvious picks so I am not too surprised.I actually had a temporary lapse in judgement, thinking Micro, hmmm Soft, MicroSoft, and I'm like "wooo that's a good one, ..... oh wait.... DAMN!"...... yeah that one went by me for a few seconds hahaha.

LOL the microsoft one, lol, hmmm... micro... soft? seams good and so original! CRAP!!! lol sorry for that!anyway, i personally would never buy a .org domain for any reason. .com is always my first choice with .net being my second. .com.au would be my absolute favourite but you need an ABN to buy one :lso u watned something that sounds techy i gather? heckitstech.com? lol i like it! (Heck It's Tech)

That's a nice name actually, I am looking for a somewhat broad name.My main focus is indeed software (desktop software for windows), but I also do web development, maybe write some tutorials for numerous technical things etc etc.Yeah none of the names I liked had .com and .net available, I currently own chessoscorner.com, but yeah, it that had of been taken I would be prepared to kill someone lmao (considering my nickname when first made up was highly original).

Sheer genius. ;)
Looking at the .xxxs available, .com is (always) the favourite. .net has a nice sound to it, but alas, for most decent names it's taken. I'm not so sure why you're not a fan of .org, though. Any particular reason, or just personal preference (or lack of ;))?

On a random site note: heckitstech.com is still available according to NameCheap. If you want it, take it before someone else does. ;)

Also, I'm guessing .com.au is the Australian version of .com, similar to how .co.uk is the UK version?

EDIT: Just had a quick Google, and found this. It looks a little out of date ("Page generated 356 days 12 hours 7 minutes 35 seconds ago."), but I can't imagine things have changed too much in a year or so. Thoughts?

I wouldn't mind .com.au, but my registar (where my money is) doesn't do .au, and .au are a lot more expensive.I don't think there was a com.au for my major preferences even anyway ;).

well if u live in australia like me and chesso then yes, .com.au is better, but your only allowed to use them for registered business websites with an ABN (australian business number)also, sites with .com.au are usually better for anything since they are a business so theyre reliable.

Around $25AUD or more for one year. That's all I have found so far, I normally would go for it, but no money and I got a special thing through this domain registar that doesn't do .com.au (their American I think, I get domains for 8.20).
