nightfox1405241487 0 Report post Posted March 1, 2006 I like to switch over to Gentoo linux, but I downloaded Gentoo 2006.0 Universal install CD PPC 32 bit. I burned the CD and it didn't work!What the heck is all of this "alpha" "amd64" "hppa" etc?? What version would work on a Pentium 3? I've already wasted a CD-R on PPC 32 bit to find out it doesn't boot.Which version do I want?Thanks for any help! XIII 0 Report post Posted March 1, 2006 this is the kernel model "if i formed it correctly" your computer uses most depends on your machine type, most machines use i386 kernels some others use i586, anyway you don't have to download or try to install ppc or alpha or anything else, if your machine has pentium 3 procesor so it needs the universal x86 distro, no other kernel model will work with it, that also typically used for any other linux distro not only gentoo.hope that helps in this matter Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Jeigh1405241495 0 Report post Posted March 1, 2006 If you didn't know what those were.. and REALLY want to try Gentoo, I'd say use the live cd they offer for x86. It's a more straightforward install then the command line install... normally I recommend doing the command line regardless (even though I'm new to gentoo too) but if your new to computers enough to not know arch types... you might consider going the simpler route to make sure you end up with a working system.Plus the live cd gives you more stuff to do during the hours of compiling stuff... yordan 10 Report post Posted March 1, 2006 In most of Linux distros, you have to know which hardware you have. i saw that some of the forummers here around have AMD 64k computers.I am currently downloading the ppc64 version because I would like to know how it behaves on a 64-bit power PC. And ibviously you have downloaded the version for the 32-bit PowerPC, which obviously will not boot if you have an Intel-compatible system.And it's very funny to see that there is a version for Alpha, this is a way for re-using old Dec computers... It boots, but it cannot insall on my ppc64 !Why is it named "install" and "ppc64" if it cannot install gentoo on ppc64 ?I boots correctly, at the boot prompt I type enter, it continues booting and it stops after the "booting local" step, nothing more.sigh!
