First of all it shouldn't be made with Javascript but PHP (if you have it). There is a tutorial on here that dungsport made for his shoutbox that should help you out. There are many tutorials on the net about this, visit phpfreaks.com, or hotscripts.com. It would be a good idea to figure out how you want to store the shouts; text file or database? I find both ways pretty easy but Mysql database is easier to manage.

Dungsport tutorial:Shoutbox

If you dont want the hassle of creating your own or one from a tutorial then i suggest Shoutmix

Good luck.

In this day and age people rarely bother writing their own scripts like this :PShoutmix is great, the advert is only a textlink which is tiny and at the top. It is barebones featurewise but it is good enough for whatever purpose you are trying to serve. There are also quite a large number of pre-made scripts on various PHP websites that you can just download, but I recommend for you not to get ones with a database because they are harder to install and rely on the databases being up.

Making a shoutbox isn't very easy if you don't have much basic php or mysql knowledge. Well i know i don't. So i skimmed the web for a simple yet easy to alter shoutbox script and i found one at http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/.

Firstly, it's free.
Secondly, you get to edit just about anything in it.
Thirdly, you don't get the ads. (Well...you DO get'em but you can just erase the simple link back to the website.)
Fourthly, the shoutbox is simple and any other editing is done purely by HTML.

I used to have another pretty good and fast one at some site which i forgot. Well...turned out the site closed down so it DID appear on some old sarch engines but not on Google and even if it does there is no link to the site.
I previously reformatted my computer not long ago and found out i forgot to save my BOOKMARKS (Mozilla Firefox calls it Bookmarks). So i surrendered to the only other shoutbox website i knew - http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/. It doesn't come with an ad but takes awhile to refresh.

These are just my past of what i found out about shoutboxes. and if you're asking - no i do NOT like http://www.tag-board.com/http://www.tag-board.com/
although i have no idea why..... :P

See, I always prefer to have my scripts hosted on my own account. It just gives me a feeling of control that I know I can fully edit/delete it. Another remotey hosted shoutbox is Shoutmix but you have to pay to get it to auto-refresh (like the one on Xisto). You can see the shoutmix box in action on my forum: IFF, although it's not being used, because my forum is still growing.

While most people use free or pre-made shoutboxs, they are not always the best. It really depends on what you want. If you want a secure shoutbox I would suggest making your own PHP shotbox or a cbox (look it up on google). If you dont care about security and simply want auto-update you may want to use Macromedia Flash to build your chatbox. Now in php it is possible to have it update every few secounds but this makes the cbox very glitchy and will slow down the time it takes for you page to load. Now people have posted many tutorials on how to make your own chatbox but I wouldnt suggest you learn php just to make a chatbox. I would suggest you used a pre-made one. I know 2 that are very good.cbox: Very good free php chatbox program that has very few glitches or errors. One problem lots of people have is an inperisination threat that allows others to post under any name. Other then that it is very good in my opinion.Flash-Gear: This is probably the best free chatbox program I have seen. It uses macromedia flash and can be put on almost any site and is very simple. It takes a while to load but once loaded you can have a glitch free conversation with someone. This is recomended for smoth back and forth converstions but as before also has an inperisination problem.Hope this helps,Sparkx
