How Do I Transfer Large Files?

Recommended Posts

I am currently away at university and I'd like to transfer large files from my home computer. By large I mean 3-5 GB each, and the total size is approx 79 GB.I have remote access to the computer using LogMeIn, someone suggested using a torrent to do this which sounds reasonable but I'm not sure if my ISP has upload limits per month or not. Most of the files are plaintext (about 67 GB or so), with a few videos as well. No I am not about to copy and paste 67 GB of text over LogMeIn, I don't even know if the sync clipboard will copy the text from 1 file properly due to the amount of text. For the video files I tried using the "Allow Internet access to my home media" option in Windows Media Player on Windows 7 but I think due to the size of the videos it hangs when it tries to access the file to play it.Another issue is speed, here at the university it's blazing fast (and believe it or not the wireless network in all the buildings on campus is faster than the wired network in the residential complexes), but at home the upload speed is only average (Shaw high-speed Internet). So that could also be a problemI know I can ask them to move the files onto two USB drives and mail them to me but I really don't want to do that cause, well the drives and mail costs money lol. Any suggestion on how to do this?(If there are no viable options then I guess I'll have to wait till Christmas when I go home, so I can transfer the files at home via a wired network.)

if you can access the university computers from your home, and if you have plenty of time, you could use a ftp client on your PC? FileZilla would do the job, five simultaneous files would exhaust your home bandwidth.

No I'm at university right now, but I can remote in to my home computer via LogMeIn. Right now I still have the torrent going at max upload speed of 48 kB/s, which will take weeks to download the files.

regardless of the options you have... you'll be limited to the up speed from your home network, that's the main bottle-neck... another thought is, have you also considered your this uploads' (from your home network) effect on your data cap if that mattersas mentioned above, Filezilla is on of many softwares you can use to assist in the process but it won't make it any quicker... even with torrent you'd still be uploading from one machine so i don't think it's a better option... best option would be to get it copied to a media (few DVDs would be cheapest) unless you have an external HDD lying around at home2nd option you wait it of while it get's transferred through network3rd option you can have a weekend break and go for a drive to your house

2nd option you wait it of while it get's transferred through network

3rd option you can have a weekend break and go for a drive to your house

The best option that you mentioned with DVDs isn't exactly economical, since that would require approximately 18 DVDs which would need to be shipped here.

I am still waiting for the files to be transferred through the network and uTorrent says that it will take weeks, combine this with the time that my parents shut down the computer and I could be waiting for months

My permanent home is >1800 km away from university so it is exactly convenient to travel home... unfortunately ;)

At first I thought to just use an external hard drive and transfer the files using it, but if you're 1800 km away from home...So use the torrent and tell your parents to not turn of your PC?Is the limit only to the p2p? or the limit for upload is for ftp too?You could buy an usb key as large as required space or several half the space or an external hard drive and ship it? But maybe that's also not economical? But a new usb key/keys or an external hard drive is always a need, not like 18 DVDs which later won't be used anymore?Don't know about your ISP, but maybe there is an option to upload to some temp server or computer and get it faster from your home? Or maybe you have a friend with much bigger torrent limits who could help you transfer the files you require?Just my suggestions

If we talking about 18DVDs then best for a portable Hard Drive... but then how urgent would you need these files? if not so urgent then maybe the slow network transfer should suffice...1800Ks would be awesome for a weekend drive - break from study! hehestill, if you're looking at not spending $ on the process than best option would be the slow network transfer

Offline transfer is best way to transfer large files. buy potable hard disk or DVD disc. simply copy to disk, Many ISP will not allow you to upload or downloads large files. or you have to pay more cost for every Mb of data. Its your choice.

@rohit : read the topic starter post, this guy does not have money enough, so he does not want to by a hard disk or a couple of flashdisk and send them over 1500 kilometers through conventional snailmail.
