ysNoi 0 Report post Posted September 17, 2010 Hi To All. I just want to share what happened to me a while ago. I was just browsing on internet and suddenly this thing showed up to my browser. Does anyone know about this? Do I have to worry about this? This is new to me so I just wanted your ideas. As you can see on the image, I was just browsing on Firefox. The Simpleton1405241582 0 Report post Posted September 17, 2010 This is the work of software called as Scareware. I hope you didn't fall in the trap and click on that "Start Protection" button? I really hope you didn't! Scareware is a black-hat technique to sell products which are usually harmful to the user than useful. This is a classic example of scareware - it scares you by giving you the impression that your computer is filled with thousands of trojans and viruses, and unless you do something about it immediately, all your data would be lost! Some people get scared about losing their data that they immediately fall into the trap and believe the scareware. They try to "start protecting" their computers but they are usually asked to purchase a product, sometimes titled as Anti-virus 2010 or something similar. Then your credit-card or other payment information is taken, and your computer is then infested with a software which is nothing but a gateway to trojans. Consider this regarding the above threat: -->How did Windows Explorer appear in your browser?! It's just a clever script which resembles your "My Computer" window. -->How did it scan your entire computer within seconds? An average computer scan lasts for at least a minute. --> Scan results appear in a separate Window, and not just beneath the drives in your computer! This page is screaming "FAKE" all along. Just don't fall in such traps. Close such tabs and scan your computer using a real anti-virus program to make sure that the malicious site didn't install anything on your drives. I thought it was on my Guest XP that I'm browsing but it was on my Host which is LinuxMint. Thanks for making it clear The Simpleton. Now I know...
The Simpleton1405241582 0 Report post Posted September 17, 2010 You were on Linux? Then you needn't have bothered about it at all! Even if you had XP on another partition, there's no way any virus could affect XP through Linux! These scareware sites are mainly designed to trap new users to the Internet who are cautious about their every move. It's alright, I guess. You get to learn about how the evil minds work now Just have a laugh and forget about all this.

yordan 10 Report post Posted September 17, 2010 Yes I'm on Linux..! It was just new to me so better ask than nevermind...Hehehe...Thanks for the information... And are you root when connecte'd under Linux? Do you have permissions on your FireFox settings?
vhortex 1 Report post Posted September 17, 2010 Yordan was asking that question since it is possible to plant viruses over the web. Using a root account on linux will make things really easy. I am also running linux and when I need to browse something, I am using a lesser access account. This way when a virus find its way to install something, only my lesser access account was infected and I can removed totally the infected account. For ordinary access like chatting or browsing random sites, I use my windows partition. tansqrx 0 Report post Posted September 18, 2010 I fix the computers at my wife’s place of employment frequently. Almost every repair has been centered around one of the employees clicking one of these fake antivirus programs. I suppose this might be a good thing if I got paid, but my work is purely charity. I have almost come to the point of making a clone image of a freshly rebuilt machine. When yet another one of these crapware infested machines graces me with their presence, I will just slap the known good image on the offending machine and send it on its way.If you see one of these pop-us in your browser, don’t worry too much. It can’t do anything to you unless you allow an ActiveX script to run or download program and install it. If you are super paranoid, clear all of the browser cache, run your antivirus, and then reboot.
ysNoi 0 Report post Posted September 18, 2010 Thanks for the opinion tansqrx...Now, I'm almost aware of it.

Sorry but I don't know this thing.Just right click on a bad spell word, try to "Download More Dictionaries".If you can add a dictionnary, this means that the user is able to change the browser settings. ysNoi 0 Report post Posted September 18, 2010 Just right click on a bad spell word, try to "Download More Dictionaries".If you can add a dictionnary, this means that the user is able to change the browser settings. I just tried to make wrong spelling on my forum and right clicked on it. And when I clicked "Add dictionaries", it allowed me to installDictionaries & Language Packs on Firefox Add-ons.What should I do then? Thanks for the tutorial... yordan 10 Report post Posted September 18, 2010 What should I do then?Nothing special. I just wanted you to be aware that, being a Linux user is not a big protection. I told you how to install a new word spelling language, this is not harmful. But you could also have been on a malicious site, and a malicious request (like allowing cookies) would also have been accepted. So, being under Linux is not enough for completely safe surfing. Probably creating a user with no privilege inside the guest group would be slightly better.
ysNoi 0 Report post Posted September 19, 2010 Ok yordan. Now that I'm aware, I will do as you told me to make another user...Thank you again.
