Extending A Wireless Network Wireless Internet

Recommended Posts

Usually, to integrate WiFi capabilities into an existing LAN involves interfacing a wireless router with an existing LAN and configuring it as an access point. If it is meant for free public use, then it may not be necessary to encrypt the transmission, otherwise it is advisable to encrypt it with at leas a 64-bit WEP (Wireless Encryption Protocol) key.Depending on the gain in db of the attached antenna, the radius of wireless coverage can vary from 250meters to close to 450meters. Now comes the stage where we need to extend the coverage of the wireless transmission, there ars several possible ways to tackle this problem, 1 attach by means of a network cable another access point to the existing LAN2 increase the amplification by adding an amplifier to the initial access point3 use the wireless access point's WDS (Wireless Distribution System) functionality to add access points at strategic locations to create a wireless mesh. The third method is what I shall focus on in this discourse.Almost all wireless routers at least the more recent models have this function built in, so it will not be an uphill task procuring an AP with WDS functionality.More on this soon!

WEP is dead ! Almost everybody can hack WEP in 15 minutes (pro's do this in a minute or 2). The absolute minimum you should use is WPA.and I suppose you live outdoors or have a 10dB-antenna ? 250m is a lot, especialy indoors, 50m-70m is more realistic imho.
