lapis 0 Report post Posted June 14, 2007 Hi.I seem to be having a problem with my IE for Mac where it seems to go straight to the MSN homepage for some reason but isn't able to download it which means I then have to force quit and go onto Sarafi insteadTne fact that my homepage on IE is supposed to be Google rather than MSN is confusing but worst of all this unwanted change has made it impossible to use my IE altogther. I also seem to have lost all of my bookmarks which have been mysteriously replaced by unwanted ones such as Apple, MSN websites and Microsoft websites - none of which I have ever bookmarked before. Is there anything that I can do to fix this without losing my previous bookmark and scrapbook listings? Many thanks in advance for any tips.
galexcd 0 Report post Posted June 14, 2007 Safari comes with default bookmarks. I suggest you use safari because it is WAY better than internet explorer and especially IE for mac. The IE for mac is TERRIBLE! An easy way to get all your bookmarks from IE to safari:1. Make a new folder on your desktop2. Open IE click on favorites tab on the left3. select all of your favorites in the list4. drag them to the folder on your desktop5. quit IE and open up safari6. click on the book logo in the upper left corner (to the left of your bookmarks bar)7. Drag everything in your folder on the desktop onto the bookmarks bar, (or wherever you want your bookmarks)8. laugh at how pitiful IE is and enjoy safari! lapis 0 Report post Posted June 15, 2007 Hi Alex,Thanks for your response and advice. I agree that Safari is much better than IE and it is only thanks to the fact that I also have Sarari that I am still able to surf the web but, importantly, I also have a lot of stuff in the IE scapbook (which is a facility Safari is sadly lacking) which I would still like to be able to access if at all possible. Unfortunately, No.2 in your list is impossible since opening IE simply takes me to the MSN homepage...... which isn't able to download anyway and simply keeps me in 'e-limbo' waiting for it to finish.....which it never does. In the end, I have to Force Quit IE which leaves me with no way of getting into IE to carry-out steps 3 to 8.But Oh how I would LOVE to get to No.8!!!! lapis 0 Report post Posted June 15, 2007 Thanks for the tip but will firefox help me recover my scrapbook items from IE? Also, would you have any idea how I can overcome the initial problem getting into IE in the first place? Thanks again for your help and suggestions.
unimatrix 0 Report post Posted June 15, 2007 Yeah, MS stopped development for Safari about 2003/2004. It's locked at the 5.0 browser stage where everyone is way pass that. Look into Opera as well as FF. Personally I think Opera is the most feature packed and fastest of the lot on Mac. I only use FF for interaction with Google since some of their features are FF only. (Which is just as bad as any other vender lock in. Yes I know FF is FOSS and all, but still it's vender lock-in just not with the name Apple or Microsoft infront of it.) Opera will even handle torrents. Not very well compared to dedicated programs like Azuerus, but still....
lapis 0 Report post Posted June 16, 2007 Hi unimatrix,Thanks for the info, it is much appreciated.Would you happen to know how I can overcome the IE problems that I am currently having and how I can save/restore the IE bookmarks that are on there right now? First I have to get into IE when it seems stuck on downloading the MSN page (which I have never bookmarked!) whenever I open it. Any suggestions would be very welcome,Thanks. Arbitrary 0 Report post Posted June 16, 2007 Ah, something similar happened to me, except that I was using Firefox, not IE (and that I was on windows). Aren't bookmarks usually stored in some sort of folder for bookmarks? If you can somehow find and copy that file (you won't need to open IE to do that), then your bookmarks wil be saved. At least that's what I did to save my info. Mine was in a folder called 'Favorites' (kinda obvious)And you should definitely consider switching to a different browser after that. Either Firefox or Opera...both are quite nice. @unimatrix, I think Opera is the fastest on any OS...Good luck. :-)
iGuest 3 Report post Posted June 17, 2007 Firefox's Bookmark manager will 'export' your list of bookmarks to an html (I think) file in order to save the current list of Bookmarks. And it will also 'import' them back from the same file format.Would this feature solve the problem you are facing?
lapis 0 Report post Posted June 18, 2007 Hi jlhaslip and Arbitrary,Thanks for the suggestions. They certainly seem worth trying. Many thanks to both of you for taking the time to think about it. I'll let you know how it goes.
galexcd 0 Report post Posted July 2, 2007 If that doesn't work, I know all browsers on the mac store their bookmarks in a plist file in the library in your home folder. I'm not quite sure where at the moment but I'll see if I can find it
