vicky99 0 Report post Posted June 15, 2006 Dear FriendsI have come to know the facts regarding Limit Reservable Bandwidth. I am stating the facts below:- This setting applies to applications that use a system called QoS, or Quality of Service. QoS ensures at certain times, some applications get more priority than others while using bandwidth. For example, if you are downloading a big file, and talking using a VOIP application like Skype, at the same time, the download will be slowed down to give more priority to VOIP, so that the sound comes clearly and without breaks. For all this to work, all the applications need to know about and work with the QoS settings. This setting says that up to 80% of available bandwidth should be given to QoS-aware applications, *if they ask for it*. If no application asks for a reservation, anyway all the bandwidth is available. Even if some application asks for say 60%, and uses 20%, and some other application needs bandwidth, the remaining 40% can be used.Examples of QoS applications are Media Player and Skype. If you don't run any of these, the setting has no meaning at all. Even if you run that kind of application, the setting will not reduce the bandwidth for others. In short, you will not gain anything by changing this setting. Just let it be. brianhot 0 Report post Posted July 8, 2006 hehehe... this guy has me cracking up !!!!this is the second time i busted his *bottom* for dishing out tweaks that wont help a darn thing.take a look: http://forums.xisto.com/topic/90263-topic/?findpost=1064348310here is the real deal: This applies to Windows 2000 SP4, XP Professional + 2003.Does NOT apply to Windows 2000 Pre-SP2 or XP Home.Unfortunately this so called "bug" and its "fix" are just another urbanmyth. :-(THE MYTH:It seems Microsoft reserves/wastes 20% of your internet/network bandwidth forthe QoS (Quality of Service) Packet Scheduler, even if this service isdisabled. To increase your overall bandwidth do this:1. Log in as Administrator.2. Click the Start button -> Run -> type gpedit.msc -> hit Enter or click OK.3. Go to Local Computer Policy -> Administrative Templates -> Network -> QoSPacket Scheduler.4. In the right hand pane double-click on "Limit reservable bandwidth".5. On the Setting tab check the Enabled box.6. Change "Bandwidth limit %" to read 0.7. Click OK and close gpedit.msc.8. Go to Start -> My Computer -> My Network Connections -> View NetworkConnections -> right-click on your connection -> select Properties (where yourprotocols are listed) -> make sure QoS Packet Scheduler is enabled.9. Reboot for these changes to take effect.THE TRUTH:Microsoft does NOT reserve NOR use ANY amount/percentage of your bandwidth forthe QoS Packet Scheduler, UNLESS the QoS service is activelytransmitting/receiving ANY data/packets between your computer (which MUST usea QoS aware program) and the QoS enabled internet/network.This is achieved through a series of PATH and RESV refresh messages sent backand forth over the connection. Therefore this is NOT a "bug" and its so called "fix" above is NOT necessary!Learn more about QoS from the "horse's mouth":- MSKB: Windows XP QoS Enhancements and Behavior:https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/316666- MSKB: QoS Traffic Control in Windows 2000:https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/233203- MSKB: Description of Reservation State in RSVP:https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/244910 FYI:"This does NOT increase bandwidth whatsoever, UNLESS your networkadministrator (I have yet to find any companies using QoS) is running on a QoSenabled network, and in this case you want it enabled anyway, to allow your PCto take advantage of this service of higher quality packets."sorry to the author. - its not personal. but... keep it real.regards brianhot. HellFire121 0 Report post Posted July 30, 2006 You will probably only see a little bit if not any difference. There is only so much tweaking you can do to get your speed upto your line speed but if you really want speed you should just upgrade your internet connection to a faster line speed. It's just not worth mucking around for the few extra bits a second.-HellFire
