Free USB Thumb Drive From Microsoft Contains Licensing Guides and Info

Recommended Posts

Here's how you can get yourself a free USB thumb drive from Microsoft :

They're stuffing a USB memory stick / flash drive with information and FAQs on licensing, how to get legal copies of Windows, best use practices and other info that the marketing pundits at Microsoft believe at least some people will go thru in return for a free USB thumb drive.

Once you get it, you're free to erase the data on it and use it as you wish, I suppose. Otherwise, they might have just burnt the info on a CD and sent that to you.

There is a catch though, the site mentions clearly that this offer is limited to one drive per person and that the offer is valid only in the USA.

Hmm... where does it say that it's open only for US residents? I submitted mine (I'm from India) and it said that they're gonna send it in 6-8 weeks. The last time I registered for the free CD with SP2 they did send it to my home address.Anyways, thanks for the heads up on this B).

Hey thats really cool, definitely thnx for the heads up, i will try and send in my request all the way from oceania and see if it works. As for this kind of advertising i hope it works because im sure even in your specific countries even a 128 MB usb is not cheap so great way for microsoft to push the envelope.

Abhi: I'm in India too and have alrady signed up for this. Hopefully, we 'll be able to get it before stocks run out. Look out for the fine print on the page towards the bottom of the page. It's the first line.

IN any case, here's hoping...

I think it's an innovative marketing method, one which I hope other companies follow too.

Hehe ... Methinks someone's going to lose their usb drive as well and ask for another one from Microsoft.

But then again, may I ask how much memory it has?
I hope at least 64 or 128 megabytes smile.gif

Hey, they're sending you a free USB drive. You have no right to ask them how much it is! :o

For all you know, it might even be 10mb, but it still beats a floppy right? :P

This is really cool. It's probably a very small drive but I'll take anything for free. Microsoft has more than enough money to offer things like this.

so like has anybody received this thumbdrive yet??? and i'm from Australia.. so if they really are serious i'll get one... but so far it seems that it's all talk cause i haven't heard of anyone actually recieving one.. so if u have please reply... and with the country you are in. they are quite expensive here in australia quite weird cause they are all made in china heheh.. but that's what you expect these days hey... especially with free trade and all of those works...

but really microsoft only does things to advantage themselves.. maybe they are thinking that the chinese are a big threat to microsoft and that they must overthrow them now before it's too late... like i remember the days still when netscape was used by lots of people.. and look at it now 0.3% of my net traffic use it... firefox is the big stunner these days.. cause i only first heard of it a year ago and more people use that on my site then internet explorer... i wonder when internet explorer are gonna get their guys onto firefox :o
but then again you can't blame firefox being big with a company like google helping it on it's way.

Where'd you get that idea? What makes you say that Microsoft thinks the Chinese are a threat?

Obviously Microsoft does things only to it's advantage ... who doesn't? :o

Woohoo - mine's ordered. If I don't get to the P.O. Box before my Mom does, she'll probably take it from me. *grins* I'd better be fast, huh?

Heh. This is the first time in a good long while that Microsoft's surprised me in a good way. Lately, it seems as if almost all of their surprises have been bad. Apparently, there is life after death. =^^=

A pity that the offer appears good only for the U.S. Although... if it's only for the U.S., I wonder why the country field in the sign up form includes other countries in the dropdown? Eh, but who cares? It's a free USB drive, after all. =^^=

Did somebody already received this USB disk ? Were you successful erasing it ?I have an USB disk and I have a program allowin me to make it read-only. Also, maybe the microsoft USB Thmb drive is also a readonly one. I thing readonly chips are rather cheap if you burn them in huge series, so maybe it's not a fully read-write device.

I am from Belgium, and I did give it a try.... LOL. I've done so in the past. I mean, once we tried this thing in class to apply for promotional packages everywhere. I got all kinds of stuff, going from free diapers to t=shirts, caps etc. (random companies were emailed.) I did the same to microsoft (just like everyone else in my class); I got 30 pens, keyhangers and loads of them. 3 t-shirts, 3 caps and 2 mouse mats and uhm wrist thingies (still don't know what exactly they were). A friend in my group got one mouse mat more, and I reapplied.. I got even more! (mind you I said I never received the first package.)
