Cody_McE 0 Report post Posted February 1, 2006 For those of you who don’t know, Guild Wars is an MMORPG or Massively Multiplayer Online Game based in the fantasy world of Ascelon.Preliminary:I am not claiming to have an excessive amount of experience in the world of MMORPG, because I don’t, but I believe I am capable of making adequate comparisons and criticisms.- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - One of the greatest features of Guild Wars was the fact that I didn’t have to pay monthly fees to keep gaming. Me myself being a very casual gamer appreciated the fact that I could play a few times a week without having to worry about getting my money’s worth.Characters:Guild Wars’ lack of depth is first noticed when creating a character. The player is given the option to choose from six professions, gender, and their models look. Although it is a let down for some of the more hardcore gamers, it allows an easy gate into the game, without having to spend so much time on choosing which attributes and skill points to start out with. The fact that you can choose a second profession makes up for some of its lacking parts. You can combine any two of the six professions in order to combine skills to battle your foe. General Game Play:While most online games attempt to create a shared world for the players to adventure together, Guild Wars takes a different approach. Only in cities and small towns do players share the area with other random players. Once you head out of the city you and/or your party are loaded on to your own individual map to face the world with no other players wandering around. The fact that there is a level cap at level 20 seems a bit odd at first, but GW is not a game about grinding for hours to reach the next level, but rather about telling a story.Combat:In combat you are only able to use a set of eight skills that are dragged and dropped to your skill bar before you leave a town. You are able to combine skills from you primary and secondary professions to send your foe to their demise. The fact that you are only able to equip 8 skills at once is a small turn off, but you are quickly able to identify your favorites and realize that you really won’t need more then 8 equiped at a time. The skill system actually works out pretty well.Graphics:Graphically Guild Wars looks incredible. The graphics are pretty detailed and the lighting is equally impressive. The amount of animation that goes on in the world is pretty fluid. A great feature is the fact that you don’t have to put out some big bucks for a super machine for Guild Wars to look good. Although frame rates can get a bit iffy in large groupings (like in any MMORPG), for the most part you should rarely have any issues with frame rates. The only area where the graphics could really use any improvement is in the player models. Many of the armor sets are pretty identical each other, and the characters are very model like, leaving out the diversity you get from other MMORPGs.One of Guild Wars greatest features said by most is the PvP mode or Player VS Player.I’m sad to say I can not really highlight on this mode of GW because I have not experienced it yet.Whether you like Guild Wars or not will depend on your taste, as for any other game. I think GW is a great choice for those being introduced into the world of MMORPG, but will probably leave more of the hardcore gamers looking for more with the lack of in-depth character development. In the end it’s all about preference.

Cody_McE 0 Report post Posted February 1, 2006 Guild Wars really is a great game, but it can get old pretty fast if you don't recognize its great qualities as a game.Once most people top out at level 20 they think they've made it to the end, and are rather disapointed. But the best part of the game doesn't really start until you’re at level 20. Once you reach level 20 you go on through the game not to increase your power or strength, but your flexibility, gaining more skills and exploring the huge world.I hadn't seen this at first, as I stopped playing before I even reached level 20 with any of my characters. But then I picked the game back up about a week ago, and I'm disapointed that I ever stopped. And from what I've read, I am even more disapointed that I never tried playing the PvP mode - one of the greatest features of Guild Wars.Hopefully I'll see you on sometime!~Cody the MAC
1mp0s73r 0 Report post Posted February 14, 2006 This game really is great. The graphic, the depth of lore, etc. I use two accounts, one for my good chatacters, one for mules and letting my friends use. Over all this game is a 8.5 because is lack of PvE randomality and character customization
kgd2006 0 Report post Posted March 1, 2006 Ive remembered I played guildwars for a couple of months, it was really addicting at the time when I first bought it then when I beat the game and finished the storyline it pretty much died out for me. I built many characters such as:1) Farming monk (makes considerbly amount of money until then changed the AI to run from your area attacks2) Warrior/mesmer just a fun melee character to play3) Ranger/Necro fun range character to play who summons demonsOverall, it was a great time playing at guildwars till the content pretty much died for me, so far I moved on and looking to other interesting games to play... presto 0 Report post Posted March 2, 2006 I love Guild Wars and have been playing since early beta. However, it certainly isn't for everyone. Guild Wars main focus is on acheiving balance between character classes to allow for greater competitiveness in pvp. You cannot reach ultra high lvls (in fact it caps at 20) and you cannot attain uber items. The reason for this is because the end game focuses on pvp rather than pvp, and the design team wanted characters to be on equal terms so that skill would determine the winner rather than who played long enough to acquire the most uber items.Pvp in Guild Wars is incredibly deep, and is closer to a FPS than an RPG. A large amount of pvp is strategy. Each character is dual classed with access to 150 unique skills a piece, allowing for a very large number of possible character combinations. However, of the 150, you can only bring 8 at a time. This requires you to rely on your teammates in order to achieve your goals.Pve, on the other hand, isn't as strong and is why I said this game won't be for everyone. This is not to say that the pve is bad, just not as good as some other MMOs. Some of the pve seems rather redundant and many of the enemy character models are reused several times throughout the game. The story isn't bad, but its presentation is. In the end, the pve is good enough that you'll probably enjoy it the first time through, but will probably not have much replayability. Hopefully, this will change with the release of Guild Wars Factions, which looks awesome so far!
