Photoshop Tutorial: How To Make That Popular Three Pixel Border

I'm going to start out with a sig I made in another tut. (link)

1. Make a new layer on top of your sig.
2. Use the rectangular marquee tool to select the whole sig. The whole thing
3. Hit D. Edit>stroke (not layer> layer style> stroke)

Width: 1 px
Color should be black
Location: center
Blending: Normal
Opacity: 100

4. Use the magic wand to select everything except that black stroke you just made. (Just click anywhere in the middle)
5. Hit x and repeat 3. Color should be white.
6. Repeat 4 and 5 to make make another black stroke inside.

Wow...cool effect! I mean, I personally found that the marquee thing worked better for me on surrounding the rest of the graphic after the first black border, but I guess that's just me. That, and it took me a while to figure out how to do the overlay right lol...here's the finished result:

How can you make the littel white squares or wtvr is making the pictures "squary"

In the bottom pink picture? I get how to do the border, but I would like to do something like that sig at the very bottom that is shown in more exaples.
