What Is The Use Of Service Packs For Windows?

Recommended Posts

Hi there. Who of you has service packs and what are they good for?Does it worth the huuuuuge download (keep in mind I have a 56k connection)?I said I wasn't going to update it but I got a video editing program and it asks me to have Service Pack 1 installed and that made me reconsider my choice...Thanks.

They release 1 service pack every year. The last one was Service Pack 2, and Service Package 1 was of course released 2 years ago.I would personally get it, but it is not compulary, and if you patch up your computer properly you don't really need it.If you have a problem with the download you can get them directly from Microsoft for free, including the delivery and packaging costs.

I have Service Pack 2 and I think it is mainly for it's Firewall.

I don't know the rate of downloading because I installed from a Compact Disc and I am lazy to look for the details.

I use Service PAck 2. Mainly it's all about security. And the firewall is perfect. Easy to manage exeptions and forward ports. I recomend you to use SP2.

If you can't download service pack, order a CD. The link is here

Service pack 2 is just another one of those "extra" software which like musichere said, is not compulsory as long as you patch up your computer and check for updates on virus definitions. The firewall that comes with Service pack i believe is totally unecessary because now i have 2 programs asking my permission to allow a certain knick-knack program i have if it can access the internet. Trust me, you only need one anti-virus software which asks your permission before allowing a program to access the internet or accessing your computer from the internet. It might be a little problematic but seeing it will be the best way to block potential viruses with a human brain, why not?

People think that sp2 it's just a firewal... a minor security patches....

That's logical, because that's all we see to it... but there are many thing that are corrected with this update that we can't see..

I downloaded the full network install of service pack 2 and upgraded. It has a couple of new features but I don't notice too many more changes. Some compatibility also has gone down a little with some older software.

Service Pack 2 with Advanced Security Technologies features a firewall and a popup blocker. It installs the latest windows updates so that Windows XP runs better with less problems. I personally dont use the firewall service, and actually dont use a firewall at all.

The pop blocker does a good job, and its built right into the internet options settings in internet explorer. If it blocks a popup, a yellow bar will appear under the address bar. So just in case it blocks a popup that u want to run, you can click on that yellow bar and select for it to temporarily run. Or if a pop isnt blocked, you can go into the internet settings under tools, and have it blocked so the same popup doesnt run again.

You can download Service Pack 2 or if anyone wants the CD (free) from Microsoft follow this link:
