Some kids do not learn to speak as early as other kids, but if you are very concerned, you should take your kid to a speech therapist just so you can keep your peace of mind from having an expert opinion on the subject. You should continue speaking to your kid and at some point, he will learn to ask for the things that he wants or to call out to you. The differences in development rates between children can be observed in just about any part of the world so just because your kid has not spoken to you yet should not make you think something is out of the ordinary.

I agree with nitin, that if your one and half year baby boy is not talking. Then please don't come to a negative conclusion. Take him to a doctor, talk to him and he understands you very well and he is active, then it is a good sign. Don't worry about your kid? Even kids learn talking at the age of two years and even two and half years. So have trust that nothing will go wrong and continue to shower your love and affection to your lovely kid.

Different kids have different skills that are shown at the earlier stages, some kids are very good at motor skills and some at speaking skills like that... their improvement will be so sudden that overnight changes can happen within a couple of days, just try to be patient and keep on speaking to your kid, the more you speak, quicker will be the result. No matter even if he doesn't repeat your words, everything goes inside his brain. And one and half year is not a big criteria, because my kid started speaking from 2 years onwards, so give him some time to observe and he will explore with good results :) .

Yes I do agree with you sharmiladevi. It is really a positive suggestion that you have given...different kids have different skills, that is true. Changes can happen in overnight or in couple of days. You have to be patient and continue speaking to your kid, the more you speak and the output will be a good one. Brain is the most powerful thing in the world. My nephew started speaking at the age of two and half years. So don't lose your faith because your output is always related to your faith. Just have faith...

Yes, I think 1 1/2 is still pretty young to be getting concerned about. If you decided a doctors visit in in order, don't forget to have his hearing checked. Children with hearing problems tend to be less vocal. Don't forget to encourage his speaking. If you tell him, "do you want a cookie?" Unless he actually says Yes. don't give him the cookie. I remember a story about another child who never spoke, when ever she wanted something she just pointed at it and her parents got it for her. She was 3 years old or more and was not speaking, simply because she didn't have to. Finally her parents put their foot down and stopped getting things for her until she would actually speak for them. I guess it was pretty rough for a little while, but the child finally caught on and began to speak. Matter of fact, she actually became a real chatter box and wouldn't ever shut up, to the point her parents wondered if they hadn't messed up by getting her started!
