I really think it depends on the type of editing you do (it can't be exactly the same picture), but as long as you keep at least one element (so, I think there can be more elements from the original image) everything counts.

 

Here are some sites you might find interesting, that talk about Photoshop/Layer tennis. I particularly like the second link, and if you scroll a bit you can see all the images that Jason Santa Maria and Darel Powazek made while playing.
