i prefer crimson editor, u can download for free at download.com, its a great program that numbers the lines and u can open multiple scripts using tabs, plus it works for all web programing languages

I think the best way to learn PHP,is just copy the examples in PHP manual,paste them into notepad. If you want to make your own script,then you may learn a bit programming language,such as c/c++.I learnt C first,and I spent 2 days to be familiar with PHP.

for any kind of programming, i find notepad.exe to be the fastest and the simplest. there's a size limit to how big of a file you can open though. which can be annoying.

If your new to php then use dreamweaver, it provides syntax highlighting, and other features. If your a pro then notepad is just fine.

DzSoft PHP Editor seem to be really good... but you have to pay for it as it's shareware.

I just use notepad, it works best for me. I use it for html/javascript php all of it.
